In the story of the trumpets of Jericho in the Bible, the walls fall down when the tribes of Israel walk around the city and blow they trumpets. Except in this song they don't, it doesn't work. You're done everything right, everything's cool but the wall's still standing. And what do you do? How do you face up to that fact? And it's all part of the whole alchemy thing. What were the alchemists trying to do? They were trying to achieve something that was virtually impossible, they spent their whole lives trying to do it, and all of them failed, or pretty damn near all of them failed. So, what does that feel like, and how does that work, and why keep carrying on. So that's the way the songs kind of work. And you don't have to go into them in all this detail, you could just sit back there and let it hit you over the head like a sledgehammer cause the album works it's just a really heavy album. What were the alchemists trying to do? They were trying to achieve something that was virtually impossible, they spent their whole lives trying to do it, and all of them failed, or pretty damn near all of them failed. So, what does that feel like, and how does that work, and why keep carrying on. So that's the way the songs kind of work. And you don't have to go into them in all this detail, you could just sit back there and let it hit you over the head like a sledgehammer cause the album works it's just a really heavy album. We thought we'd try and do something a bit different. Most songs have a guitar solo in the middle. We always tried to do things a little differently. We thought instead of a guitar solo we'd have a guitar break which would consist of guitar runs and harmonies.'' (Steve Harris) "Running Free" was Maiden's first single, and is still a Maiden classic and one of their most memorable songs. It is a very simple song by Maiden standards, with a repetitive tune and chorus, but it still manages to convey some energy. "Running Free" is a much better song when played live, and indeed it has been a concert staple over the years. Despite all that, this song is far from being one of the best on this album -- it's just a bit too simple and repetitive to make it a really good Maiden composition. Early versions of this song had a guitar solo by Dave Murray, but for some reason the solo was dropped before the album was released. That's a shame because the solo added an interesting spark of energy that now seems to be lacking. The story is basically that of a runaway American teenager who hitch-hikes his way through the country in pursuit of fun (of course, this could happen in any other country). It is not clear why he spends a night in a Los Angeles jail (maybe just for the rime!), although one may suspect that the vagrancy laws of California are somewhat tougher than those in Britain. Nevertheless, he successfully manages to pick up a girl at some bar called The Bottle Top, which has probably angered the "natives", as "all the boys are after [him]". He doesn't seem to mind, but quite on the opposite seems to enjoy it. There are some wild youths who like to live dangerously! Paul Di'Anno was asked what "Running Free" was about by Shan Siva, of battlehelm.com, and here's his answer: "'Running Free' is about me as a kid. My mum ruled my life, but she said to me, 'You live in a shit area, but do what you can do and see what happens... As long as you don't hurt anybody, just get on with it'. But I did get into trouble with the law a few times and that's the only thing I wish I could change... The grief I gave my poor mama. I never really knew my real dad, but my step dad was really cool. Sometimes, he'd surprise us and walk in when we were doing some speed, but he'd just brush it off as long as it wasn't heroin or the hard shit. The classical guitar-like opening was Dave building the mood, with bells in the background. It's about someone with only a few hours left to live. In concert the end part of this one takes off. Dave takes the first solo and then Adrian.''(Steve Harris) The unfolding story of the song is seen through the eyes of a man who, facing imminent death, experiences first anguish, then terror, and finally hope that he will return -- hence the final line taken from the Lord's Prayer. The sentence referring to life being "just a strange illusion" should probably not be taken literally, and it seems to be indicating that the way most people consider their own lives is an illusion and not life itself. They have this illusion that the life they're living is the one that was meant for them, and this prevents them from looking any further. The lyrics deal with a character who knows that his time has come, with the darkening sky representing the beginning of the end (Steve Harris has himself mentioned that the lyrics quite match the story of the Last Supper in the Bible). However, this particular character seems to have lived his life to the full and does not express any regrets to leave this world. There is a hint as to the possibility of reincarnation ("Maybe I'll be back some other day"), as is customary in many Maiden songs that deal with death. The title "No More Lies" itself could have different interpretations. It could be that, when the end comes, there's no more time to lie about how we see our life. The illusions we had about our past simply vanish and we're confronted to the truth, no matter how much we tried to hide from it before. On the other hand, it could also represent the hope that, if there is a next life, it won't be filled with lies as the previous one was. Wipe the slate clean and start all over again, with truth and honesty -- "I'm coming back to try again". The main particularity of this song is that it was the first song of the album to have been disclosed to the audience during the "Gimme Ed... 'Til I'm Dead" tour that took place prior to the release of the Dance of Death album, and Bruce warned the audience at every concert that he didn't care if the song was illegally recorded and posted as an mp3 file on the Internet, as long as people were going to buy the album on the day of its release. This marks the beginning of a new attitude towards the diffusion of music files over the Net, far remote from Metallica's who initiated court cases during the infamous "Napster Incident", and thus made themselves very unpopular. Iron Maiden have understood that the mp3s anyone can download from the Net should be an appetiser, either before an album release or to get to know an album before buying it. People who download music without ever buying the albums are committing a crime by law -- such a crime's name is simply "theft" -- and are abusing this great system that allows the sampling of an album before its purchase. Steve commented quite rightly a few years ago that, because of such an electronic diffusion of music, they would have to re-think the way they do things in the future, and that's exactly what they did. Not a single note of the album was to be found on the Internet prior to the release of Dance of Death, and "Wildest Dreams" was only known through the poor-quality live recordings that were made during the tour. This manoeuvre actually raised the fans' curiosity and constituted a pretty good marketing gimmick. Maiden had cleverly turned illegal diffusion of music files to their advantage, and fuelled more interest in their upcoming album than before. One last thing to note about "Wildest Dreams": the album doesn't start with the music right away, but with Nicko counting the beat. Most albums have Nicko talking at the end of some track or another, but this one is special in the way that "Mad McBrain" is the first one to be heard on an album before the music even starts. ''Dance of Death'' album marks the first participation in songwriting by Nicko McBrain, who co-wrote the song "New Frontier" and also is the first (and so far only) time that all members of the band get a songwriting credit. The Reincarnation Of Benjamin Breeg.Based on a completely fictitious character that quite interestingly became a powerful marketing tool for the band, this song may be the weakest on the album. Benjamin Breeg was born in London on September 3rd, 1939.Breeg travelled widely between 1960 and 1970, visiting many different countries. Living for two years in Haiti before travelling to Eastern Europe where he lived between 1966 and 1969. He was forced to flee from Romania in 1969 following local Police investigations. He returned to England in March 1971. Upon his return, he was offered a position with the International Institute of Paranormal Investigation which he accepted.He wrote four books between 1971 and 1977. None of these, as far as can be ascertained, remain in print. All, however, concern the sights and cultures Breeg experienced while travelling. The emphasis in all four volumes is on the Occult practices of the countries visited. Benjamin Breeg disappeared from his home on June 18th, 1978. All efforts to locate him proved unsuccessful. "These colours don't run" is incidentally what Bruce said to the audience while holding proudly the Union Jack during the infamous "eggfest incident" at the San Bernardino gig of 2005, where the Iron Maiden set was rudely disrupted by eggs being thrown at the musicians and various other unpleasant things happening due to the "Ozzy camp". Dave takes the first solo and then Adrian.''(Steve Harris) The unfolding story of the song is seen through the eyes of a man who, facing imminent death, experiences first anguish, then terror, and finally hope that he will return -- hence the final line taken from the Lord's Prayer. The sentence referring to life being "just a strange illusion" should probably not be taken literally, and it seems to be indicating that the way most people consider their own lives is an illusion and not life itself. However, this particular character seems to have lived his life to the full and does not express any regrets to leave this world. There is a hint as to the possibility of reincarnation ("Maybe I'll be back some other day"), as is customary in many Maiden songs that deal with death. The title "No More Lies" itself could have different interpretations. It could be that, when the end comes, there's no more time to lie about how we see our life. The illusions we had about our past simply vanish and we're confronted to the truth, no matter how much we tried to hide from it before. "Iron Maiden can't be fought, Iron Maiden can't be sought" is similar to the chorus in saying don't try to stop Maiden or avoid listening because Maiden will be successful come what may and you will eventually love Maiden if you give them a fair crack of the whip. That sentiment continues into the chorus with "Oh well, wherever, wherever you are, Iron Maiden's gonna get you no matter how far" again saying Iron Maiden are going to be successful everywhere, showing the determination of Steve Harris to succeed. The Reincarnation Of Benjamin Breeg.Based on a completely fictitious character that quite interestingly became a powerful marketing tool for the band, this song may be the weakest on the album. Benjamin Breeg was born in London on September 3rd, 1939.Breeg travelled widely between 1960 and 1970, visiting many different countries. Living for two years in Haiti before travelling to Eastern Europe where he lived between 1966 and 1969. He was forced to flee from Romania in 1969 following local Police investigations. He returned to England in March 1971. Upon his return, he was offered a position with the International Institute of Paranormal Investigation which he accepted.He wrote four books between 1971 and 1977. None of these, as far as can be ascertained, remain in print. All, however, concern the sights and cultures Breeg experienced while travelling. The emphasis in all four volumes is on the Occult practices of the countries visited. Benjamin Breeg disappeared from his home on June 18th, 1978. All efforts to locate him proved unsuccessful. "These colours don't run" is incidentally what Bruce said to the audience while holding proudly the Union Jack during the infamous "eggfest incident" at the San Bernardino gig of 2005, where the Iron Maiden set was rudely disrupted by eggs being thrown at the musicians and various other unpleasant things happening due to the "Ozzy camp". Originally inspired by Ingmar Bergman's 1957 film The Seventh Seal. "Dance Of Death" is not referring to the medieval dances of death, a series of ancient plays that have reached us through paintings and engravings, the most famous of which being Holbein's (1497--1543). Instead, the story takes us to the deep South of the United States, where Voodoo has taken place and is still said to occur regularly still now. The setting of the story is the Everglades, a marshy area and a national park at the southernmost tip of Florida, and somehow quite close to where Nicko McBrain lives, although there is no indication that the drummer inspired the location of the tale. The lyrics are reminiscent of those of "The Number Of The Beast", although the character of the story is here actively participating to the gruesome ceremony and there is no mention of Satan (the undead may have "ascended from Hell", but they seem to be on a night out without the "boss"). Basically the feel of it is so up in term of the vibe you could almost be listening to an Offspring track during one or two bits of it as far as I was concerned. I was just thinking about when I stand up in front of x thousand people singing, just thinking about the buzz I get out of it; I'm thinking about the buzz I used to get when I was a kid and I used to go to rock festivals you really felt you belonged to something bigger than yourself on that one day. You also felt in some ways that you could change something; you could change the world a weeny bit that day 'cos you're all in that field. I don't know if he was on the same wavelength as me but it sounds to me like a big storm 'cos I've already got the navigator lashed to the helm as not to be tempted by the sirens on the rocks trying to distract him. 'Running Free' is a song from Iron Maiden's album ''Iron Maiden'',released in 1980. ''Running Free' came together when I put a riff to the main drum beat by Doug Sampson. The part in the middle I worked up from a bunch of bits I wrote. We thought we'd try and do something a bit different. Most songs have a guitar solo in the middle. We always tried to do things a little differently. We thought instead of a guitar solo we'd have a guitar break which would consist of guitar runs and harmonies.'' (Steve Harris) "Running Free" was Maiden's first single, and is still a Maiden classic and one of their most memorable songs. It is a very simple song by Maiden standards, with a repetitive tune and chorus, but it still manages to convey some energy. "Running Free" is a much better song when played live, and indeed it has been a concert staple over the years. Despite all that, this song is far from being one of the best on this album -- it's just a bit too simple and repetitive to make it a really good Maiden composition. Early versions of this song had a guitar solo by Dave Murray, but for some reason the solo was dropped before the album was released. That's a shame because the solo added an interesting spark of energy that now seems to be lacking. The story is basically that of a runaway American teenager who hitch-hikes his way through the country in pursuit of fun (of course, this could happen in any other country). It is not clear why he spends a night in a Los Angeles jail (maybe just for the rime!), although one may suspect that the vagrancy laws of California are somewhat tougher than those in Britain. Nevertheless, he successfully manages to pick up a girl at some bar called The Bottle Top, which has probably angered the "natives", as "all the boys are after [him]". He doesn't seem to mind, but quite on the opposite seems to enjoy it. There are some wild youths who like to live dangerously! Paul Di'Anno was asked what "Running Free" was about by Shan Siva, of battlehelm.com, and here's his answer: "'Running Free' is about me as a kid. My mum ruled my life, but she said to me, 'You live in a shit area, but do what you can do and see what happens... As long as you don't hurt anybody, just get on with it'. But I did get into trouble with the law a few times and that's the only thing I wish I could change... The grief I gave my poor mama. I never really knew my real dad, but my step dad was really cool. Sometimes, he'd surprise us and walk in when we were doing some speed, but he'd just brush it off as long as it wasn't heroin or the hard shit. I don't have the same attitude with my kids, though -- if I catch 'em with anything I'll kick the crap outta them." Yet another interesting story by master story-teller Paul Di'Anno. Is there any truth in this? Probably somewhere. 'Iron Maiden', released on April 14, 1980, is the debut album by the British heavy metal band Iron Maiden.Every song on this album except 'Strange World' has since been recorded by the Dickinson-fronted line-up of the band, either on live albums, on studio B-Sides, or both.

We're trying to create a mood with the build-up of the song. The classical guitar-like opening was Dave building the mood, with bells in the background. It's about someone with only a few hours left to live. In concert the end part of this one takes off. Dave takes the first solo and then Adrian.''(Steve Harris) This is what many fans consider the best Iron Maiden song ever, and perhaps the best song of all time. 'Hallowed Be Thy Name' describes the thoughts and emotions of a condemned man on his way to the gallows. There is a striking similarity with the lyrics of 'Rainbow's Gold', a song by a band called Beckett that was later covered by Maiden on the B-side of the 2 Minutes To Midnight single. And though the end is near I'm not sorry Catch my soul, it's willing to fly away -- Hallowed Be Thy Name And your bird she's singing Catch your soul, he's willing to fly away -- Rainbow's Gold The unfolding story of the song is seen through the eyes of a man who, facing imminent death, experiences first anguish, then terror, and finally hope that he will return -- hence the final line taken from the Lord's Prayer. The sentence referring to life being "just a strange illusion" should probably not be taken literally, and it seems to be indicating that the way most people consider their own lives is an illusion and not life itself. They have this illusion that the life they're living is the one that was meant for them, and this prevents them from looking any further. They often never fulfill their original dreams because they have been deceived by all those fake dreams that have been instilled into them by society. There is actually no way to describe this song other than absolutely inspired and brilliant. The long instrumental section that dominates the last half of the song is rivalled only by 'Phantom Of The Opera', and the lyrical depth and emotion stand alone, unapproached by anything else that can be heard. This is probably the best song ever written! 'The Number of the Beast' is the third studio album by British heavy metal band Iron Maiden.
