Most of this area will be underwater during heavy spring runoff. We climbed 2,000 feet to go over a pass before returning to the Southside Road for the run back to our trailers. We started from the Spillway Campground on the East Fork reservoir of Rock Creek and traveled around Georgetown Lake before heading north into the hills. We stopped to play along the way and also took a few wrong turns before locating Hidden Lake. While we were having lunch in front of an old cabin a group of hikers came out of nowhere and introduced themselves. Come to find out, the cabin was owned by one of the hikers' grandfathers! This area has been heavily mined over the years and is surrounded by the Beaverhead National Forest. Lion Mountain sits at an elevation of 9,550 feet and mining continued in summer and winter until 1893 with the repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act. Cleopatra, the largest mine in the area, closed in 1895.Mines include Hecla, True Blue, Cleopatra, Keokirk, Cleve, Silver-King, Franklin, Elm-Orlv, and Minni-Gaffney.This sequence was captured with a Hero-11 Camera, a Samsung Galaxy smartphone, a DJI Phantom 3 Advanced, and a DJI Mavic 2 Pro with a Hasselblad camera. You can see adits (openings to horizontal mines) to 20 miles of underground tunnels. Miners had to climb stairs to enter these openings in order to go to work extracting ore that contained silver, lead and copper. The ore was transported to the stamp mill four miles away by overhead cable cars and then transported to Glendale for smelting. All the trees you see have grown since the 1890’s since all timber was stripped from the hills to feed the smelters blast furnaces.Silver mining came to a virtual standstill with the repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act in 1893. Sporadic mining occurred until 1922. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Historic Canyon Creek Charcoal Kilns - near Melrose, Montana MTIn a drainage close to the ghost town of Glendale, Montana sits the ruins of 23 charcoal kilns. Canyon Creek Charcoal Kilns were constructed in 1881 and used until 1900. They transformed 11,665 acres of pine trees into 19 million bushels of charcoal. Coke was shipped in from Pennsylvania and together they fueled the smelters in Glendale. The roaster glowed red as the three 50-ton blast furnaces roared. Bullion from the Glendale furnaces was melted into 90-pound silver bars and shipped to Omaha for final processing. Some of the kilns were whitewashed to help keep the smoke inside. In 1900 the mines were closed and the smelter at Glendale was torn down. The unused kilns fell into ruin. This was an easy ride in my Polaris General David Lee Side-by-Side.In Burke, Silver, lead, and zinc were the precious metals extracted from the Star mine, owned by the Hecla Mining Company. The mine opened in the 1890s, but fire destroyed all above-ground structures in 1923. The brick and concrete structures you see today were built in the 1920s after the devastating fire.The 8,100-foot-deep Star Mine was the deepest mine in North America. It closed in 1982 but saw brief activity in the 1990s. In 2011 Hecla Mining Company studied re-opening the mine due to rising silver prices.Founded in 1884, Wallace sits in the Silver Valley mining district of northern Idaho, the world’s largest silver producer. In 2004 the mayor made a proclamation: “I, Ron Garitone, Mayor of Wallace, Idaho, and all of its subjects, and being of sound body and mind, do hereby solemnly declare and proclaim Wallace to be the Center of the Universe.” You can see the Center of the Universe in this video at 5:30. It is marked by a purple man-hole cover in the middle of Bank Street and Sixth Street. The road was a bit rough in some places and excellent in others. A high-clearance vehicle or an ATV is recommended. No cars, motorhomes, or tow trailers should attempt this road. Trout Creek has been named the "Huckleberry Capitol of Montana" by the state's legislature in 1981. Trout Creek is located on the banks of the beautiful Noxon Reservoir in the Rocky Mountains of western Montana. The parade is only a small portion of the two-day festival held every year starting on the second Saturday of August. It is widely known for its excellent rock climbing and unique rock formations.According to Wikipedia, California Trail wagon trains of the 1840s and 1850s left the Raft River valley and traveled through the area and over Granite Pass into Nevada. The City of Rocks marked roughly halfway to California for the emigrants and their loaded wagons. Names or initials of emigrants written in axle grease are still visible on Register Rock. Ruts from wagon wheels also can be seen in some of the rocks.The landscape of City of Rocks has been sculpted from granite that was intruded into the crust during two widely spaced times. The granite that composes most of the spires is part of the 28-million-year-old Almo pluton. However, some of the spires are made of granite which is part of the 2.5-billion-year-old Green Creek Complex that contains some of the oldest rocks in the western United States. While aimlessly searching the internet for something to do I stumbled upon a song that I thought was unique and different.My video-processing mind just started up again (so much for the hiatus). How could I use this song in another video? The excitement was now building. One of the last steps in creating my videos is choosing the appropriate music soundtrack but this was a challenge for me because I now have the music but no video in mind.I have untold hours of video to choose from but first I needed a theme. A family video? A camping video? A water video? A General David Lee video? A drone video? A combination of all videos that I have captured over the past 30+ years? Listening to the music a few more times while visualizing video feeds in my head, I ultimately settled on a drone/water theme.Now the fun begins. While looking through and trying to remember all of the aerial water videos I have captured in the past 10 years it was apparent that I only had enough clips to fill 1/2 of the music soundtrack. I had to change my focus.I ended up choosing an assortment of aerial clips that impressed me. I borrowed additional footage from my flying friends Bill, Ed, and Rich for this production. I now had a theme going so I could continue on. This video isn’t going to be for everyone, but I only need to please one person, myself! This thought made it easier for me to theme this production.Using my typical editing workflow I gathered all of my clips from five backup hard drives (double the number of clips that I needed) and started the video processing; cutting clips to fit the beat of the music (5.20 seconds each) organizing, culling, stabilizing, color correction, tweaking, etc. The earlier 1K/HD clips also needed to be up-converted to 4K/UHD. The complete editing process was time-consuming but then again if it’s worth doing it's worth over-doing!It is awesome to have an extensive library of video clips to choose from and to have friends who fly drones and are willing to share their awesome footage.Seven drones were used in this production: DJI Inspire - DJI Phantom - Two DJI Phantom 3’s - DJI Mavic 2 Pro with a Hasselblad camera - DJI Mini 2 and an Autel Evo 2.Postproduction was accomplished with Blackmagic Design DaVinci Resolve Studio.Music used: Bittersweet Symphony - 1997 English Rock Group Verve – Performed in 2008 by Vitamin String QuartetBig Sky Montana
Unbelievable Autumn Scenery - State Line Ridge Rd - Long Version - between western Montana and Idaho davidegg22 2023-01-30 | Unbelievable Autumn Scenery - State Line Ridge Rd - Long Version - between western Montana and IdahoIn October 2018 Rich and I made a day trip up to the State Line Road on the mountain ridge between western Montana and Idaho. It was quite the adventure since this was new territory unexplored by us. I had studied the digital maps of the area and found Forest Service roads that we could take the General David Lee on to make a loop to/from this high mountain trail. We had no idea what we were going to see or if we would be blocked by early season snows that usually fall in these higher elevations. It was 9 a.m. when we parked at the I90 Two-mile exit close to St. Regis. We followed the Two-mile Creek Road (FS431) south to the junction of Coyle Creek Road (FS1180) and then onto Newman Ridge Road (FS1185). That placed us at the 6,400-foot Stateline Road (FS391) that straddles the ridge between western Montana and Idaho. We preceded north-west following the 30-mile tree-lined and open road viewing incredible scenery looking west into the St. Joe National Forest of the Idaho panhandle. On the east side of the ridge was the Lolo National Forest of Montana and a few high mountain lakes such as Heart Lake and more fantastic scenery. After exploring this route and talking to the only other humans we saw on the trail we found Dominion Creek Road (FS810) which led us back down the ridge into Montana. We stopped at the Milwaukee Railroad Dominion Creek Railroad trestle near the I90 Taft exit where Rich captured some awesome aerial footage. We then jumped onto a 30-mile segment of the Route of the Olympian Trail, the abandoned Milwaukee Railroad bed that was mostly straight and level following I90 and the St. Regis River. We drove over the trestle at Saltese and under I90 a couple of times on our leisurely autumn afternoon ride back. At the end of our 70-mile journey, we encountered two unknown narrow gates straddling the trail. These gates are designed to stop larger vehicles from entering the trail system. The General is 63” wide and we just barely squeezed through. I am glad we did since it would have been a second adventure retracing our 70-mile ride back to the pickup. This area has been heavily mined over the years and is surrounded by the Beaverhead National Forest. Lion Mountain sits at an elevation of 9,550 feet and mining continued in summer and winter until 1893 with the repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act. You can see adits (openings to horizontal mines) to 20 miles of underground tunnels. Miners had to climb stairs to enter these openings in order to go to work extracting ore that contained silver, lead and copper. The ore was transported to the stamp mill four miles away by overhead cable cars and then transported to Glendale for smelting. All the trees you see have grown since the 1890’s since all timber was stripped from the hills to feed the smelters blast furnaces.Silver mining came to a virtual standstill with the repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act in 1893. Sporadic mining occurred until 1922. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Historic Canyon Creek Charcoal Kilns - near Melrose, Montana MTIn a drainage close to the ghost town of Glendale, Montana sits the ruins of 23 charcoal kilns. Canyon Creek Charcoal Kilns were constructed in 1881 and used until 1900. They transformed 11,665 acres of pine trees into 19 million bushels of charcoal. Coke was shipped in from Pennsylvania and together they fueled the smelters in Glendale. The roaster glowed red as the three 50-ton blast furnaces roared. Bullion from the Glendale furnaces was melted into 90-pound silver bars and shipped to Omaha for final processing. Some of the kilns were whitewashed to help keep the smoke inside. In 1900 the mines were closed and the smelter at Glendale was torn down. The unused kilns fell into ruin. The Forest Service has been stabilizing the kilns and now Canyon Creek Charcoal Kilns is one of the best-preserved kiln sites in Montana.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Garnet - A Montana Ghost Town in HD - Short Version - near Missoula, Montana MTHigh in the mountains of western Montana, you will find a REAL ghost town, Garnet, one of Montana’s best-preserved and least visited. Garnet was started in 1895 when gold was discovered. The town thrived with over 1,200 miners and their families. Garnet had four hotels, four stores, two barbershops, a butcher shop, a doctor’s office, laundry facilities, and thirteen saloons. It even had a stagecoach service!After a few years, the gold ran out and so did the population. It dwindled down to 150 people by 1905. The ride then crosses the river and makes a loop back toward Riverfront Park after passing beneath the Monroe Street Bridge.The current iteration of the ride was constructed in 2005 by the Doppelmayr Garaventa Group. The original version of the SkyRide was built in the 1960s by the Riblet Tramway Company and purchased by the City of Spokane secondhand for Expo '74. The ride had two routes at Expo, one over the exposition's fairgrounds, and the other descending down the Spokane River Gorge to view the Spokane Falls. The fairgrounds route was removed after the conclusion of Expo, but the Falls route was retained. The original ride had open-air gondolas, which served until the ride's reconstruction in 2005, which rebuilt the attraction and upgraded it with fully enclosed gondolas as part of a $2.5 million project. The dam is located just west of the Montana border and the Cabinet Gorge Reservoir extends into Montana, nearly to Noxon Rapids Dam.Construction began in 1951 by the Morrison–Knudsen Corporation, with groundbreaking ceremonies on April 1.The Clark Fork River had to be diverted with two coffer dams and speed was necessary because spring flooding threatened the river diversion and coffer dam integrity. Thirty-two tons of dynamite was used to blast 50,000 cubic yards of rock from the canyon walls in order to prep the construction site. Water was diverted through two 1,000-foot tunnels, and 500,000 cubic yards of earth were excavated from the site overall.
