Instagram: (Haven't posted in months but you never know 😅) instagram.com/the_read_headWitchy.... but not | A very specific book listThe READ head2021-10-26 | Hello There, it's been a little while since I've posted but what do you know, I'm back in the groove. Who knew I'd have so much to say on the Modern Witch movement but here are some very specific historical fiction book recommendations.
I've noticed a lot of historical fiction novels projecting modern feminist ideologies onto their female characters. While this is not exactly a sound historical practice I found that in some books this modernization didn't bother me. Turns out what they have in common is a loose application of witch characterizations. I believe this works because it is much easier to accept empowered, anti-patriarchal, progressive attitudes can come from a character that can somewhat align with a real historical group that was socially ostracised for female-centric skills and victims of patriarchy.
I'm normally such a stickler or any historical anachronisms that these exceptions really stuck out for me until I could sort through and identify this pattern.
If you consider yourself a modern witch or are likewise culturally intrigued by the movement I'd love to hear your thoughts on my conclusions in the comments!

I'd just like to clarify. What I was metaphorically rolling my eyes at was actually the tone in which the book handles their poverty which felt very unconvincing and primarily a plot device. I didn't feel that true financial anxiety was communicated and yet it was a very melodramatic point throughout the book. Thus my attitude towards their "poverty".

I was super excited to hear about an impromptu Asian readathon lead by Cindy @ readwithcindy during May. I got a bit of a late start but am very pleased with the 4 books I managed to read from Asian authors in the month so, although it's a bit delayed, I still really wanted to share these fantastic reads.
The Remains of the Day; Kazuo Ishiguro Kitchen/Moolight Shadow; Banana Yoshimoto The Joy Luck Club; Amy Tan The Collected Schizophrenias: Essays; Esmé Weijun Wang

I first dumped all of the impressions this book left on me into a (long) document. When I revisited the document, the content in this video is what had stuck with me and bubbled to the top of my "lasting impressions". I had so many other thoughts and ideas and elements of this book I thought were profound, more than I have ever experienced during my time on booktube, and that was thrilling!
Reading Winter by Ali Smith was such an engaging and fantastically stimulating experience. I can't recommend it enough and I am confident this one will be on my end of year favorites list.

All together this was a decent book thought I did feel it had some short comings. This review is really only a fraction of the many thoughts I had while reading the book but I didn't want to ramble on forever! 😅
As I mentioned in the video, I will soon be publishing a second video on this book, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, focused on some of my more critical thoughts on the book including a proposed alternative ending. If you are interested in that please subscribe and keep an eye out for it soon!
