After finishing my DIY fiber laser cutting machine, DIY tube cutting machine, and DIY CO2 laser, today we’re finally starting a new project...a DIY metal 3D printer (SLM)! This is going to be my most ambitious project to date, so we're going to take it slow and try to learn a lot along the way. In this video we take a look at the main laser components were going to be using, do some temporary wiring, and build a stand for the galvo head so we can begin testing.

Today we laser cut and install all of the body panels. Then we do an initial test purge, filling the chamber with argon until the oxygen level is below 0.5%. Finally, we test the powder recoater, and make some software adjustments until we achieve good coverage...next time we will attempt the first test print!

Finally today we get to assemble all of the parts we've been fabricating! The aluminum machined parts arrived from PCBWay and we are going to put it all together to build the printing chamber.

I've spent the past two weeks fabricating the rest of the parts we need to assemble the machine. We finish up the build platform and powder delivery systems, we cut and laser weld the parts for the gas recirculation system, we cut out the rest of the gaskets, and 3D print a few parts...the parts from PCBWay have arrived so next video we can assemble everything!

I've spent the past two weeks making parts for the build platform and powder delivery mechanisms. Lot's of digital manufacturing action using a number of my machines: CNC router, CNC mill, Fiber laser cutter, and CO2 laser cutter. We also do some laser welding and hole tapping. It's coming together, but I would like to get some feedback before moving on.

I've spent the past two and a half weeks doing design and 3D modeling for the DIY metal 3D printer. Today, let's actually start building it! We build the aluminum extrusion frame, move over all of the electronic and laser components and begin wiring them, and we also do a test fit of the gas recirculation system.

Sorry for the delay, it's been a bumpy road getting this project going. After a few set-backs, I'm finally making some progress and testing the JYM software/controller and acquiring components for the gas recirculation/filtering system. With these new components in hand, I'm able to start making plans and a rough design...it's starting to come together...over the next couple weeks, I will be working on the 3D model so we can start making parts for this machine. Stay tuned!

Today we finish the DIY CO2 laser cutting/engraving machine! We build the material storage base and get the laser installed on it. We do some test cuts and engravings and compare the performance to my 100W glass tube CO2 laser machine. I reveal the final build cost and compare the specs to commercially available machines. The BOM and 3D model will be on my Patreon page if you are interested in building one for yourself. With this project finally wrapped up, I'm excited to start the next project of a DIY SLM metal 3D printer, so stay tuned!
Today we continue progress on the DIY CO2 laser cutting/engraving machine. We go through the rigorous process of aligning the beam path mirrors for the first time, we level the cutting bed, install the upper and lower doors, and finish adding the body panels!
Today we continue progress on the DIY CO2 laser cutting/engraving machine. We install and wire the all of the electrical components, begin configuration of the Ruida RDC6445GT5 controller, and finish the air-assist and exhaust fan systems. We get to see first movement of the gantry, and do a test engraving run at 3,000 mm/sec. Everything is now set to start working on the beam path.
Today we continue progress on the DIY CO2 laser cutting/engraving machine. We install the CO2 RF laser source, the first and second mirrors of the beam path, beam expander, beam combiner, drag chains, HEPA filter, and exhaust fan. Lots of fiber laser cutting, CNC machining, and laser welding action!

Today we’re starting a new project! While I wait for parts to arrive to start building a DIY metal 3D printer, we’ll jump ahead and start building a DIY CO2 laser cutting/engraving machine. I'm going all out to make this DIY machine comparable to any high-end CO2 laser on the market. I'm using AC servo motors for crazy fast engraving speeds and I'm using a 60W RF laser tube for precision engraving.

New project!!! After a month of designing, I'm finally starting the build of my DIY fiber laser tube cutting machine. I want to tackle the most complicated part first, so we're starting with the self-centering front chuck. There are many mechanisms that do self-centering, but when you want to accommodate rectangle-shaped tube it becomes more complicated, because you need two independent self-centering mechanisms. In this video, we get my front chuck design machined and assembled in preparation for installing it on the frame.

Testing the speed of my new belt-driven design. The Leadshine EL8 Series 400W servo motors probably have enough torque to move the gantry all on their own, but with my set up paired with 5:1 planetary reducers, we can still easily reach 1000mm/sec for rapids, and I've still not configured acceleration or tuned the motors. The frame is moving around because it's still on caster wheels.

Since putting out my video series on building a DIY fiber laser cutter, I’ve received an overwhelming number of questions about the project. So today I try to answer the top 3 questions that I get:
1. Should I get a manual focus or auto-focus fiber laser cutting head?
2. Where should I order fiber laser components from?
3. Can I upgrade my CNC router or plasma cutter to use a fiber laser and still use the original controller?

I get it set up and print out some functional parts to improve the workflow of my shop. I use 3D printed parts in combination with fiber laser cut parts and CO2 laser cut parts to make some improvements to my CNC mill and desktop CNC lathe.
Shortly after retrofitting my Intelitek Benchman MX CNC mill with a Masso G3 Touch, I tested out the 4th and 5th axis trunion table, and found it to be inadequate for cutting metal...there was too much chatter and it just wasn't going to be rigid enough. So I upgrade to a more rigid rotary 4th axis, install a self-centering vise, set up a test CAM file in fusion 360, and do my first 4th axis CNC operation. The first test went well and I'm excited to use this upgraded machine in upcoming projects!
I purchased a used Intelitek Benchman MX CNC mill and retrofit it with a Masso G3 Touch controller, AC servo motors, 1kw servo for the spindle motor, and added a custom power draw bar. I also did a host of other upgrades, including: making a custom front control panel and tool rack, wiring up a 4th and 5th axis trunion table, adding a hand-wheel pendant controller, mist coolant system, tool height setter, and wiring up a touch probe. I'm excited to use this upgraded machine in upcoming projects!
