Stephie Grappelli, the Calico Cat was the Grand Finale Guest on “Mondays with Mark and Maggie” Mark OConnor 2022-11-30 | Hello friends and fans, especially the viewers of our seventy “Mondays with Mark and Maggie” online shows from our home during the pandemic lockdown: Many of you have been introduced to our beautiful kitty, who we named Stephie (after Stephane Grappelli). Well, we had her all during the pandemic, all during the Mondays shows, and she became a member of the family who kept us company and who we loved. With heavy hearts we want to let you know our beautiful Stephie passed away last week from a serious illness. We will miss Stephie dearly.During the 70 shows each Monday, we think that Stephie really enjoyed the routine of us getting ready to go on air, and she always wanted to get on camera. We always waved goodbye to the audience holding her at the end of each show. On our final episode (#70) instead of having a musical guest stream in from their home, like we did so often, it was finally her time to shine and get the spotlight. She did a series of her acclaimed four tricks! We went back to the tape and edited the reel for you to enjoy our Stephie. The show's creator and executive producer, Brian O'Neill, says the idea was to make each week's musical host a person known to most country music fans, then slip in lesser known talented artists-most often people whom the host liked. To continue Daniel’s legacy through a musical mission of peace, Jon crafted a work of art, the Daniel Pearl Memorial Violin. As one of Daniel’s musical mentors, Mark O’Connor was invited by the family and friends of Daniel Pearl to perform at his memorial service in Boston, November, 2002. Jon contacted Mark to help him present the beautiful violin to the Pearl family at this memorial for Daniel. One year later, the Pearl family gifted the violin to Mark and his string camps in order for deserving students to have the opportunity to practice and perform on such a valuable instrument with the monetary value of $20,000 to $30,000. A tradition was established at O’Connor String Camps, that the violin in Daniel’s name, would rotate through the student body in perpetuity. From that initial inspiration, and through the help of more private commissions, the array of Daniel Pearl Memorial Instruments grew, eventually becoming a quartet of uniquely beautiful stringed instruments dedicated to Danny’s memory. Two violins crafted by Cooper, as well as a cello and a viola, are now presented each year to promising young musicians by Mark O’Connor. At the O’Connor Method String Camp, exceptional string students are awarded the honor to play these instruments for a year, and are also given a scholarship to return to camp the next year and continue the tradition. After a twenty-year layoff due to chronic bursitis in his right elbow caused by guitar and mandolin playing (but not from playing the violin), O’Connor found a way to come back to his old form and then some on his first love. O’Connor’s inspiration for the return was his own family band and his career-long connection to his guitar mentor and friend, the estimable bluegrass guitar legend Tony Rice. The album is dedicated to the memory of Rice who passed away this past Christmas Day.While O’Connor’s original Markology album featured the guitar playing of Tony Rice, on Markology II, O’Connor performs his guitar arrangements alone on his favored acoustic guitars, unaccompanied. The result is musical and guitar mastery with stunning natural tone quality showcasing both the soul and fireworks of his guitar playing on pieces like Dvorak’s Goin’ Home to Flailing, Greensleeves and Alabama Jubilee.
