When Jordan Went To War With Palestinians | Black September Hikma History 2024-10-16 | King Hussein now had the added headache of becoming host to the PLO, the Palestinian resistance movement. This was a headache for him because the PLO would launch attacks into Israel from their headquarters in Jordan; as a result inviting Israeli reprisal attacks on Jordanian soil. The PLO became so prominent in Jordan that they were in essence able to form a state within a state, violating local laws, shooting at Jordanian soldiers. King Hussein’s very authority was under threat from the powerful Palestinian groups. By September 1970, the inevitable conflict of interests culminated into open warfare. In the events that have since been referred to as Black September, the PLO were routed out of the capital Amman within 2 weeks, and by the summer of 1971, all of the PLO members were expelled from Jordan; moving their bases to Lebanon. How Israels Victory In 1967 Came To Haunt Them Hikma History 2024-10-10 | In June 1967, Israel scored one of the most stunning military victories in modern warfare against the combined forces of Syria, Egypt and Jordan. In the space of 6 days, they neutralized their foes and moved in to take control of what was left of Palestinian territory. perhaps the most important side effect of this emphatic victory was that it emboldened independent Palestinian resistance groups to take matters into their own hands and rely less on fellow Arab states to fight on their behalf. From their headquarters in Jordan, the PLO enjoyed a surge of unprecedented popularity as recruitment for their cause increased massively. The group gained such momentum that by 1970, King Hussein of Jordan felt his position and authority were under attack by the PLO, who some have described as having created a state within a state in Jordan. So King Hussein forced the Palestinian resistance movement out of his country in events that are now known as Black September in 1970. When Israel Invaded Lebanon Hikma History 2024-09-30 | From South Lebanon the Palestinian Liberation Organisation frequently launched attacks on Israel, which ultimately led to a number of military reprisals. The first of these came in 1978, when the Israeli army rolled into southern Lebanon to neutralize the threat of fedayeen attacks. The Israeli involvement in the war as a response to Palestinian attacks further complicated Lebanon’s civil war. 4 years later, Israel would invade again. This time, they wanted a permanent solution to PLO attacks. They allied themselves with the Christian Lebanese Front and besieged Beirut. Seeing themselves surrounded and at the prey of aerial attacks, the PLO were given a way out under the protection of international peacekeepers as they accepted defeat and relocated their headquarters to Tunisia. The Lebanese Civil War would drag on throughout the 1980s and finally came to an end in 1990. How The Timurids Created A Renaissance Amidst Civil Wars | History Documentary Hikma History 2024-09-26 | Commonly in history, there has to be a period of political stability that is subsequently accompanied by great cultural advancements. The Timurid Empire, established by the legendary Turco-Mongolian conqueror Timur, did not adhere to this rule. Almost immediately from Timur’s death in 1405, his progeny were locked in constant conflict with each other as each sought to assert their dominance over Timur’s vast realm. This lack of political stability did not prevent the Timurids from supervising a renaissance that saw cities like Herat and Samarkand become icons of artistic glory and scientific progress. As the Timurids went to war with each other, beautiful monuments were erected, schools of art were opened up and astronomical observatories were established. Dost Mohammad Khan’s Legacy Hikma History 2024-09-20 | Dost Muhammad Khan lived two hundred years ago, but his stature as the byword for an illustrious ruler had a long-lasting resonance. Surviving many dangers in a tempestuous era, he laid the foundations for not only the Barakzai dynasty but also the state of Afghanistan. With the decay of the Durrani Empire, Afghanistan had a need for a strong ruler that could keep the realm unified. The Dost fit that bill perfectly. For much of his reign, he had to balance dealing with internal discord in his realm, whilst protecting it from outside for like the capable Sikh armies of Ranjit Singh. Perhaps his greatest victory came in mediating the Great Game rivalry of Britain and Russia, who both had their own designs for his Emirate. The Greatest Empire Youve Never Heard Of! | Timurid Documentary Hikma History 2024-05-22 | Medieval Islamic history is dominated by Turco-Mongolian dynasties. One of the most impactful of these was the Timurids. Named after its ferocious and legendary founder Timur, who would take his armies across Central Asia, Persia, India, Russia and the Middle East - vanquishing anybody that stood in his way. In the wake of his death in 1405, his successors fought over the scraps of empire, leading to its political decline over the next century. Despite this, Timurid cities such as Herat and Samarkand retained its place as centres of learning and art, inaugurating a period referred to as the Timurid Renaissance. At the same time as civil wars between family members were destroying the territorial integrity of the realm, incredible buildings were being constructed and leading scholars were finding patronage. Is The West A Threat To Islam? | Islamic Modernism Documentary Hikma History 2024-04-16 | By the latter half of the 19th century, European imperialism penetrated nearly every institution in the Muslim world. From their palaces and armies, to their schools and hospitals. This overwhelming European presence sought to dismantle the central role Islam played in shaping Muslim society. European empires, though Christian, were becoming increasingly fervent advocates of secularism; believing that religion should become absent from public life. Many Muslims vehemently rejected this. But with the West growing in power and influence, many Muslim thinkers and leaders began to adopt Western ideals in the hopes that maybe they could better instrumentalise their religion to an ever modernizing milieu. Other Muslim scholars, however, thought that these ‘reformist’ Muslims were straying away from their religion and becoming too close to the teachings and politics of the colonizers. Nader Shah - The Shepherd Who Became Emperor | History Documentary Hikma History 2024-03-26 | In 1698, a child was born in the mountainous regions of North Khorasan. Despite the fact that he came from no royal lineage—his father was a mere shepherd—he would one day become the last of the Asiatic world-conquerors, in the vein of Timur and Chinggis Khan. The boy’s name was Nadr-Qoli, meaning “servant of the wonderous one (God)”. There was nothing about Nadr-Qoli’s circumstances which marked him out for greatness. His ancestry was undistinguished, his place of birth remote, and his social connection were unremarkable. The collapse of the Safavid Empire, however, would provide the opening that a young ambitious man required. With Persia being overrun by the Hotaks, Nader took charge of the fight back, expelling the Afghans from the country. From there he established the Afsharid Dynasty and declared his mission to conquer lands in all directions. Thus forcing different elements of society to make their discontent known. Amongst these, the Ulama were often the leading force. Some view him as a hero who forged a nation, whilst others see him as a traitor who sold out his culture and religion. Born at a time when the Ottomans were desperately clinging on to their survival, he would go on to fight for the Sultan in numerous conflicts including WWI. But from 1918 onwards, as he saw his homeland being partitioned by multiple powers, he positioned himself as a revolutionary nationalist leader. Against all odds he led the Turkish National Movement to victory and forged Turkey, a new nation that was born from the ashes of the Ottoman Empire. During his presidency, he would give the Turkish republic a brand new identity; one that saw it pivot away from its Middle Eastern Islamic roots to one that embraced Modernisation and western ideals.
