This video captures the jazzy first movement of the concerto entitled “Return of the Prince”. Grammy nominated composer Chris Brubeck navigates both the classical and jazz worlds, performing on electric bass, bass trombone, and piano. Featured soloist George Curran became the bass trombonist in the New York Philharmonic in 2013. Previously, he was a member of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra for six years and a fellow with the New World Symphony. Our Guest Artist Series and Jazz Heritage Series helped to inspire the next generation of musicians. The Inaugural Diversity Fellowship offered an opportunity for college-aged musicians from a range of backgrounds to fully immerse themselves in our unit. Most importantly, we continued to honor our veterans: at concerts, in Honor Flight performances, and at our sacred missions at Arlington National Cemetery.Max Impact's keyboardist, Technical Sgt. Pines of Rome - by Ottorino Respighi The United States Air Force Band 2022-12-19 | We are thrilled to finally release our latest video product, Pines of Rome! Written by Italian composer Ottorino Respighi, the work was premiered by the Augusteo Orchestra in Rome on December 14th, 1924. Since then, it has become a standard of orchestral literature and this transcription masterfully translates this work for concert band.A vivid depiction of Roman life, the composer included these extensive program notes for each of the four movements: The Pines of the Villa Borghese (Allegretto vivace)—Children are at play in the pine groves of the Villa Borghese, dancing the Italian equivalent of “Ring around a Rosy.” They mimic marching soldiers and battles. They twitter and shriek like swallows at evening, coming and going in swarms. Suddenly the scene changes. The Pines Near a Catacomb (Lento)—We see the shadows of the pines, which overhang the entrance of a catacomb. From the depths rises a chant, which echoes solemnly, like a hymn, and is then mysteriously silenced. The Pines of the Janiculum (Lento)—There is a thrill in the air. The full moon reveals the profile of the pines of Gianicolo’s Hill. A nightingale sings. The Pines of the Appian Way (Tempo di Marcia)—Misty dawn on the Appian Way. The tragic country is guarded by solitary pines. Indistinctly, incessantly, the rhythm of unending steps. The poet has a fantastic vision of past glories. Trumpets blare, and the army of the Consul bursts forth in the grandeur of a newly risen sun toward the Sacred Way, mounting in triumph the Capitoline Hill.Fun fact: This piece was one of the first pieces to include electronic sounds. Un Momento Dado - Featuring The United States Air Force Band and Calefax Reed Quintet The United States Air Force Band 2022-11-23 | The United States Air Force Band is proud to present this throwback performance with renowned reed quintet and our Guest Artist Series performers, Calefax Reed Quintet. “‘Un Momento Dado’ was inspired by a phrase spoken by the legendary Dutch soccer player Johan Cruyff (1947-2016) at a press conference in Spain. It translates literally as, “at a given moment,” and was soon after integrated into everyday Spanish. The title is a reference to Cruijff’s idiosyncrasy and enthusiasm, qualities that composer Johan De Meij sees in Calefax and that form his inspiration for the piece. The piece was written for and premiered by the Calefax Reed Quintet. With strong encouragement from the Calefax musicians, De Meij opted for a concerto grosso-like form for his new work, in which the reed quintet and the wind orchestra seamlessly alternate with each other, as well as occasionally combining forces. During the majestic orchestral opening of two minutes' duration, with its expectant trumpet flourishes and a notable role for the harp, one can instantly hear the musical point of departure that de Meij chose for Un Momento Dado. This leitmotiv comprises the notes C-A-E-F-A: the note names that appear as letters in the name CALEFAX. In its pure form, this motif is first heard when the reed quintet makes its first appearance, introduced by the oboe. What follows is a succession of inspiring musical ideas with richly expressive color combinations. In this context, De Meij creates striking moments when he connects one of Calefax’s instruments to a group from the wind orchestra; a dreamy passage for the saxophone soloist together with the saxophone section, and the oboe soloist combined with the band’s double reed instruments. There is also a moment in which Calefax is responded to by the same five wind players in the orchestra, who De Meij jokingly refers to as “Shadowfax”. To commemorate this day we present a piece composed by saxophonist Bob Mintzer entitled ‘Runferyerlife.’ It features one of the Airmen of Note’s saxophonists, Senior Master Sgt. Grant Langford as well as trombonist Master Sgt. Kevin Cerovich and esteemed Jazz Heritage Series guest, drummer Ignacio Berroa‘Runferyerlife’ was released on a 2006 Bob Mintzer album, “Old School : New Lessons.” Mr. Mintzer is a critically acclaimed performer, arranger, and educator, and has been a guest artist of the ‘Note several times in recent years. He is a member of the GRAMMY-winning Yellowjackets and on the faculty at the University of Southern California. The saxophone was invented in 1846 and was introduced for the casual market as a parlor instrument. It was designed to have the projection of brass instruments with the agility of a woodwind. Discarded in many classical circles, the saxophone really caught on in the 1900s in vaudeville and ragtime bands. Fly Me to the Moon Featuring Chelsey Green The United States Air Force Band 2022-07-20 | On July 20th, 1969, the first crewed mission to land on the Moon was manned by Neil Armstrong Civilian (U.S. Navy veteran), Buzz Aldrin (U.S. Air Force veteran), and Michael Collins (U.S. Air Force veteran). In celebration of this historic event, we are looking back to our own collaboration with special guest artist Chelsey Green and The United States Air Force Band's recording of "Fly Me to the Moon."“Fly Me to the Moon” was written by Bart Howard in 1954 as a slow waltz, with the title “In Other Words”, first recorded by Kaye Ballard. While a variety of singers released recordings in the following few years, it was Peggy Lee’s appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1960 which greatly increased its popularity. In 1963, Peggy Lee convinced Howard to change the title to “Fly Me to the Moon”. In 1962, Joe Harnell arranged and recorded an instrumental version of the song in bossa nova style which spent 13 weeks on Billboard’s “Hot 100” list. In 1964, Quincy Jones arranged the song for the album “It Might as Well Be Swing” (Frank Sinatra and Count Basie’s Band) and changed the time signature from 3/4 to 4/4, which has been standard for the song ever since. Born on May 26th, 1926 in Alton, Illinois, Davis became one of the most prominent jazz musicians of the 20th century. His musical style spans several genres, including big band, rock, funk, African rhythms, and electronic music. Calefax also embraces a multitude of musical genres, defining themselves as a classical ensemble with a pop mentality. The fusion of this work with these artists is a fitting musical collaboration on World Music Day.The ballad “Blue in Green” is a plaintive tune that echoes the loneliness of an Arkansas back road that Davis’ had walked with his cousin. National Band Association 2022 Young Composer/Mentor Project Livestream The United States Air Force Band 2022-06-15 | The United States Air Force Band presents the culminating concert of the National Band Association's (NBA) 2022 Young Composer/Conductor Mentor Project, held at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling. The project is the only competition of its kind that allows artists aged 29 and under to collaborate with a world-class musical ensemble and work with renowned mentors in their field free of charge.The project pairs three young composers and three young conductors chosen from a pool of applicants from across the country. Sadly, their service has not always been recognized or celebrated. U.S Marine Corps Navajo Code Talker Samuel Tso recalled, “I found out I was fighting for all the Indian people. All the people in the United States, all what we had, as we call United States. I found out this is what we were fighting for.” In this installment of Hidden Heroes, we illuminate the contributions of all Native American, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian veterans by presenting a serene composition, Pisachi (Reveal) Epitomes 1, 3, 6, composed by Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate and performed by our Air Force Strings quartet.This video highlights scenes from the National Native American Veteran’s Memorial. The Empress by Melissa Aldana The United States Air Force Band 2022-03-30 | The 2022 Women’s History Month theme, “Providing Healing, Promoting Hope,” gives recognition to the numerous ways that women of all cultures have provided both healing and hope throughout history. This exciting video release of “The Empress” showcases a dynamic female instrumentalist who continues to shine. Melissa Aldana, a GRAMMY-nominated saxophonist, is the first Jazz Heritage Series guest for the Airmen of Note this year. Born in Santiago, Chile in a musical family where both her father and grandfather were saxophonists she has catapulted herself into the pantheon of distinctive jazz artists. Her original composition “The Empress” has significant meaning for Ms. Aldana. “In numerology and tarot, The Empress is a symbol of creation,” she says. “She represents my essence as an individual, and this entire journey.” This work certainly shows the depths of her musical journey. Also featured on this song is pianist, Technical Sgt. Chris Ziemba, who weaves through the dense chord structure with ease. Strum by Jessie Montgomery The United States Air Force Band 2022-02-28 | Take a journey with us today as we celebrate the service and sacrifice of African American service members by visiting two monuments dedicated to their exemplary service, paired with music composed by Jessie Montgomery, one of America's leading composers for chamber music. Montgomery’s "Strum" is a delightfully colorful work that weaves American folk songs together. Performed by the Air Force Strings, it is the perfect acoustic backdrop for the two monuments we visit today on this final day of Black History Month 2022. The African American Civil War Memorial honors the service and sacrifice of over 200,000 African-American soldiers and sailors who served in the U.S. Army and Navy during the Civil War. Their service helped to end the war and free over four million slaves. Located on the National Mall, the Three Soldiers Memorial represents the diversity of the American forces that served in Vietnam - Latino American (left), European American (center), and African American (right). A classical pianist, jazz instrumentalist and singer, a civil rights activist and actor, Hazel Scott was one of the most famous women of her era. This program is a journey toward further understanding the breadth of Hazel Scott’s artistic contribution while also exploring the works of other prominent American composers, including the consummate classical work of African American composer, Florence Price.“As Hazel Scott’s biographer, it is especially gratifying to, once again, have the opportunity to speak one-on-one with her son, Adam Clayton Powell III, who shares details not only of his mother’s career on the concert stage—from New York to Hollywood to Paris—but also their lives beyond the limelight. Lift Every Voice and Sing Featuring Chelsey Green on Violin The United States Air Force Band 2022-02-15 | To celebrate Black History Month, we are looking to our collaboration with special guest artist Chelsey Green and The United States Air Force Concert Band's recording of "Lift Every Voice and Sing."As described on the NAACP's website:"Often referred to as "The Black National Anthem," Lift Every Voice and Sing was a hymn written as a poem by NAACP leader James Weldon Johnson in 1900. His brother, John Rosamond Johnson (1873-1954), composed the music for the lyrics. A choir of 500 schoolchildren at the segregated Stanton School, where James Weldon Johnson was principal, first performed the song in public in Jacksonville, Florida to celebrate President Abraham Lincoln's birthday. At the turn of the 20th century, Johnson's lyrics eloquently captured the solemn yet hopeful appeal for the liberty of Black Americans. Set against the religious invocation of God and the promise of freedom, the song was later adopted by NAACP and prominently used as a rallying cry during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s."We celebrate Black history Month in February because that is the birth month of Frederick Douglass, an abolitionist and social reformer, and President Abraham Lincoln, who abolished slavery. Festive Overture by Dmitri Shostakovich The United States Air Force Band 2022-01-21 | Written in 1954, Dmitri Shostakovich’s “Festive Overture” was composed for the 37th anniversary of the October Revolution. While this fiery work was originally composed for orchestra, it has over time become a standard in the wind band repertoire, combining jubilant brass fanfares with soaring melodies and intense woodwind technical passages. According to legend, Shostakovich composed the entire work in just a few hours, rushing to meet a concert deadline in only three days. Shostakovich’s friend, Lev Lebedinsky, elaborates, “The speed with which he wrote was truly astounding. Moreover, when he wrote light music he was able to talk, make jokes and compose simultaneously, like the legendary Mozart. Riffs for Lenny The United States Air Force Band 2021-12-17 | Paying tribute to the great American composer and conductor, Leonard Bernstein, the final movement of Frank Ticheli’s “Concerto for Clarinet and Wind Ensemble” is a fiery conclusion to this virtuosic masterpiece.According to the composer, "While composing the final movement, Riffs for Lenny, I imagined Bernstein perched on a pulpit (a podium?), passionately preaching about Music as a powerful and necessary force for humanity. Frank Tichelis Concerto for Clarinet & Wind Ensemble: 2. Song for Aaron The United States Air Force Band 2021-12-14 | One of the greatest American composers of our day, Frank Ticheli drew his inspiration for his "Concerto for Clarinet" from arguably the three most iconic American composers of all time - George Gershwin, Aaron Copland, and Leonard Bernstein. It is a demanding work for the ensemble and even more challenging for the soloist. "The second movement, Song for Aaron, evokes the gentle, open-aired quality sometimes heard in Copland's slow movements. If the listener notices a song-like quality here, it may be because it was originally composed for voice (An American Dream, for soprano and orchestra, mvt. 6). March of the Belgian Parachutists by Pierre Leemans The United States Air Force Band 2021-12-13 | PARACHUTISTS ON PARADE | "Marche des Parachutistes Belges", or “March of the Belgian Parachutists”, is a prize winning composition written by Belgian composer Pierre Leemans . First published in 1945, Leemans wrote the march in just one evening after having spoken with Belgian paratroopers. The work imitates a military band passing in review with a softly tapered beginning and ending.
