Where is the BEST place to inline skate / rollerblade?

WHITTYskater 2021-07-27 | For any inline skater or rollerblader out there I am guessing that most of you would choose to roll smooth tarmac. Skating along on a beautiful smooth surface is just immensely satisfying after all.

As much as I love a super smooth surface, to be honest if that’s all I had things would actually become a little boring. For me I do also like to challenge myself with my skating and so I also enjoy finding bumpy and uneven surfaces to roll.

In this video I am skating around a modern housing estate. It’s fast becoming my absolute favourite place to skate especially when I am just looking for an easy chilled roll. There is an absolute abundance of pathways here. They are all interlocking and sprawl all over the place which makes my skate sessions really interesting as I am very rarely just skating in a dead straight line.

A common question I get asked by lots of non-skaters is 'How to you do that'? Well the simple answer is......PRACTICE. Like any skill we want to learn we have to practice to learn and get better.

I believe learning to skate can be something that is self taught - that's how I did it. If you have someone to teach you that is a bonus but it is perfectly possible to teach yourself, maybe with just the help of a few tutorial videos on YouTube! Ultimately how good you become is all down to how much practice you are willing to put into it.

How to rotate inline skate wheels - flat 4 wheel setup - easy method to rotate rollerblade wheels

WHITTYskater 2020-11-28 | In this video I am going to show you how to rotate your inline skate / rollerblade wheels. Specifically I am covering a flat 4 wheel setup where you want to keep all your wheels more or less the same size.

For the purpose of this video the front wheel will be number 1, then number 2 number 3 and finally the back wheel number 4.

Generally speaking you tend to wear out the front and back wheel a little quicker than the middle two wheels..... so let me show you how to rotate them!

Using the method in this video will effectively move the front and back wheels to become the middle wheels and also rotate the wheels from one foot to the other. We will also ensure we have moved our inside edges to become our outside edges.

Overall using this method will give you a good even distribution of wear if you repeat this process often.

Note: There are more complicated ways to rotate your wheels that will offer an even better distribution of wheel wear. However, I think for most inline skaters / rollerbladers out there the method in this video will be just fine...it works for me.

Disclaimer: as with any of my 'how to' videos please note that I am not a qualified skate instructor, nor am I any sort of professional skater. I am just an average skater who is completely self taught. The tutorial in this video is a method that has worked really well for me and I hope others will find it useful.

BIG wheel inline skating / rollerblading - Endless blading 110mm

I really like the dual setup of the endless frame but still prefer the 4 x 90mm with the balanced rocker thh. It was good to try out the big wheels though.

Inline skates - how to install and remove wheel bearings easily - tutorial

WHITTYskater 2020-06-21 | Two methods for installing inline skate wheel bearings and one method for removing them.

Install:

The first one uses the tool that normally comes with your inline skates called an allen key or hex key - if you don't have this tool you can buy one from a skate shop. The second method involves no tools and is super easy to do.

Remove:

Using the tool that normally comes with your skates - very easy to do, just involves a little practice to feel the edge of the bearing before removing it.

Please note though I am not a qualified skate instructor. These are the methods I use on my bearings and have worked just fine for me without any issues. You do anything I show in this video at your own risk.

How to take curbs on inline skates / rollerblades - 5 techniques for beginners tutorial

WHITTYskater 2019-11-16 | In this video I will give you a breakdown of 5 techniques for going up and down curbs on inline skates / rollerblades that I think are suitable for the beginner skater to learn. Or indeed any level of skater if you have not tried them before.

These are the step up, the hop up, two foot jump up, the roll down and the step down.

These are the techniques I taught myself when I started to skate the city streets. Please note that I am not a skate instructor. These are just my ideas on how to take curbs but I hope they can help you out.

This certainly is not a definitive guide to taking curbs. There are many other ways to do it. I would always encourage people to check out other guides and tutorials, whether that is here on YouTube or with your local skate instructor.

I would always recommend that people wear adequate safety protection when inline skating / rollerblading. This is of course though a personal choice and it is not for me to dictate to people what to do. We all skate at our own risk.

WHITTYskater 2019-09-07 | In this video I will run through 5 tips that will help you start inline city skating.

Rollerblading the streets is a fun and exciting experience but its best to have few skills and some preparation done before you start:

1. Learn to stop
2. Get your head up
3. The scissor
4. Respect others
5. Keep it familiar (to start with)

These 5 tips are certainly not meant to be a definitive guide but hopefully will give you a starting point.

Skating the city - Cathedral district/city centre Gloucester, UK - rollerblading/patins/rolki

Filmed early in the morning when the streets were quiet - just the way I like them.

Skates used are Seba FR1 with 80 mm wheels.

Useless fact: Gloucester cathedral,which you see in the first part of this video, was used as a location for the first two Harry Potter films. Specifically they used the cloisters for the corridors of Hogwarts School - never seen the films myself but I'm sure plenty of people have!

WHITTYskater 2019-08-16 | Welcome to Gloucester. In this video I am rolling the SEBA FR1s through the docks and quayside district. It's a great mixture of road surfaces from super smooth to bumpy cobblestones. I had an absolute blast exploring.

Gloucester docks has undergone huge redevelopment in the last few years. The area had largely fallen into disrepair since its heyday as a Victorian inland port but has now been completely rejuvenated and is once again a thriving area, all be it, with a very different look to 150 years ago.

Rollerblade Twister - pressure release skateflow - inline skating/patins/rolki

WHITTYskater 2019-07-26 | Back on the Rollerblade Twister Edge X skates.

I recently took a heat gun to the shell to release an annoying pressure point. And for the most part this has been very successful. The skates are the most comfy they have ever been.

This was my first time back out on the Rollerblade Twisters after using the heat gun on them. Finally they are comfortable enough to roll for consecutive days.

So it's taken a few months to get these skates to this point but I am glad I persevered with them. It's a little extreme to have to use a heat gun and not ideal, but at least it is a viable option with plastic shelled skates.

For me learning to stop was the key to my progression. Once I had some basic slowing and stopping techniques it gave me the confidence to try new things on my skates knowing that I could control myself and stop when needed.

Rollerblade Twister Love and Hate - RB Twister Edge X further thoughts skateflow - inline skating

WHITTYskater 2019-06-14 | I have been rolling the Rollerblade Twister Edge X inline skates for about 3 months now.

For the most part I love them.....I love how fast they roll and I love how precise they are. I put this down to their light weight, stiff boot and super fast hydrogen wheels.

Unfortunately there is one thing I hate....and that is, I cannot roll them everyday. I am still getting a pressure point on my right ankle which causes a blister after about 1.5 hours of skating. Therefore my ankle hurts the next day so I have to roll another pair of skates.

Bur for the 1.5 hours I can roll them I LOVE THEM!

How to stop on inline skates / rollerblades - 3 stops for beginners tutorial

WHITTYskater 2019-05-31 | In this video I will give you a breakdown of three stopping techniques on inline skates / rollerblades that I think are suitable for the beginner skater to learn. Or indeed any level of skater if you have not tried them before.

These are what I refer to as the drag stop, the basic powerstop and the powerslide.

These are the three techniques I taught myself when I started skating three years ago and these breakdowns are how I learnt them. It is not very long ago that I was still learning so I can remember what it was like trying to stop and some of the problems I had. I hope this tutorial will help you out!

Please note though I am not a skate instructor. These are just my ideas on how to learn but I hope you find them useful.

This is not the definitive guide on how you must stop! There are lots of different techniques and variations out there. I would always encourage people to check out other guides and tutorials, whether that is here on Youtube or with your local skate instructor.

Note: Sometimes these stops are called different names, for example the drag stop is also called the L stop and T stop. And the powerstop and powerslide are sometimes inter changeable. Confusing I know!
