In this latest episode of "Destination Houston," Great Day producers Emma Ross and Keirra Ewah visited The Rothko Chapel.Tucked away in a beautiful area of Houston’s Montrose neighborhood, The Rothko Chapel is situated between the University of St. Thomas and the Menil Collection. The Chapel was founded by John and Dominique de Menil, and serves as a place of both spiritual reflection and a work of major modern art. The de Menils created the space with celebrated abstract artist, Mark Rothko, who envisioned the chapel as a sanctuary for meditation, reflection, and inspiration. Rothko was heavily involved with every aspect of the building design from the geometric shape to the specific lighting. Fourteen of Rothko’s paintings make up the heart of the Chapel. These art pieces, known as the "Rothko Panels," are a series of dark, abstract canvases that invite viewers into the painting. Visitors can immerse themselves in both the art and the spiritual environment, making each visit a unique transformative experience. The de Menils wanted the Chapel to serve as both a holy place and a gathering center for the community. The Chapel hosts regular programs that address social justice issues, foster dialogue, and spark positive change. The Rothko Chapel is a powerful example of Houston’s rich cultural heritage and is well worth a visit. Especially when you go south of the border, you realize that it's not related to one color of skin, eyes, or hair. The way Ana Saia looks may throw some people off, but she's Hispanic and calls herself "The Redhead Latina." She shares her Mexican American heritage with over three million followers on TikTok. Her most popular videos usually include her Mexican mom. A so-called "no sabo" kid is a child who comes from a Latin or Hispanic family and speaks little to no Spanish. Because of this, they can sometimes be treated as outsiders to the culture. Saia created a post explaining how to survive a family reunion as a "no sabo" kid. Saia grew up listening to Spanish at home in Las Vegas but continuously works to improve her Spanish to clean up the "English accent" many tend to have due to the culture clash.As a social media personality, she is often faced with backlash and hate comments, but she loves to turn a bad situation upside down. Destination Houston: The Beer Can House Great Day Houston 2023-01-24 | A look inside Houston’s Iconic Beer Can House created by John Milkovisch.Located on a quiet street in Houston’s Rice Military neighborhood, you might hear the Beer Can House before you see it. Over fifty thousand beer cans adorn the house once home to John Milkovisch. The retired upholsterer for the Southern Pacific Railroad, began his project in 1968, inlaying his yard with marbles, rocks, and metal objects because he "got sick of mowing the grass".An avid beer drinker, and never one to throw something away, John soon began using old beer cans to add aluminum beer can siding to his home. Over the next 18 years, John’s house became dubbed the “Beer Can House” as it was adorned with metal garlands, wind chimes, fences, and even a mailbox made out of beer cans. After John Milkovisch and his wife, Mary, passed away, the Beer Can House was acquired and restored by The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art.
