MARC FABER, EDITOR AND PUBLISHER, "THE GLOOM, BOOM, AND DOOM REPORT":
What has been happening lately is that a lot of stocks have not reacted favorably to actually good numbers. You look at General Motors, it's down 20 percent already. And the auto sales in the US were very good.
I believe that if you look at the world, there are some people who believe that the global economy is healing and will expand at an accelerating pace.
But I can tell you living in Asia and observing especially the Asian economies and emerging markets in general, most emerging economies are either not growing or slowing down very considerably, like China, where for the first time in many years in June, car sales were down, where freight traffic is down.
And you only have to look at industrial commodity prices. They have tumbled. Collapsed. Usually this happens in a period of economic weakness, not strength.
HARLOW: So, what about those, though, that point out, look, you cannot have sort of quarter-on-quarter, year-on-year ten percent growth in China, right? Jamie Dimon talking about it in the JPMorgan conference call the other week, saying do not get too concerned about this. We still saw China's numbers, if you take them at face value, coming in at 7 percent growth.
(LAUGHTER)
FABER: Yes, that is what they're telling you. Do you ever believe what governments are publishing?
(LAUGHTER)
FABER: You have to look at statistics that actually reflect the economic reality and the truth and not believe the Ministry of Truths in the world.
HARLOW: Let's talk about Europe and Greece and the ECB.
(LAUGHTER)
HARLOW: You came out this week and you pointed to what you --
(CROSSTALK)
FABER: You want to change the subject.
HARLOW: Well, I don't want to change the subject, but I do want your take on this, and that is what you call Ponzi finance, in terms of the ECB.
FABER: Yes.
HARLOW: -- and the dealings with Greece. Explain.
FABER: Yes. Well, I think that Greece is in a very difficult position, and basically they have had austerity, their GDP is down more than 25 percent over the last few years. But the debt has continued to expand, partly because of imprudent lenders, you understand?
The private sector would never have lent that kind of money to Greece. But the ECB and the EU and the IMF, they all lent that money. Now Greece cannot pay, this we all know, and the IMF also says so. Greece needs a haircut according to the IMF of about 30 percent in their debts. I would think that minimum 50 percent of Greek debts have to be written off.
So, what happens is, the EU will lend the money so they can repay the IMF and the ECB. It's a complete joke.
HARLOW: So --
FABER: And the austerity that is being imposed on Greece will make matters even worse. Greece will stay in depression.

Can Indian elephant take on Chinese dragon? 'Not in the next 20 years'
While Modi's India is out to put its economy on the fast track, China's economy is slowing after over 25 years of breakneck growth. President Xi is managing the slowdown with efforts to boost domestic spending, while cracking down hard on corruption. And it's been predicted that India could outpace China as the world's fastest growing economy as soon as this year. So is the world's largest democracy primed to overtake the world's biggest single party state as the next economic miracle?

As ISIS (the Islamic State for Iraq and Syria) militants carve their way through Iraq, currently trying to take a power plant in Baiji that powers much of Baghdad, the Iraq and the U.S. governments are reeling from the fall of Mosul, Iraq's second-largest city.
The first head of state following the fall of Saddam Hussein, Ayad Allawi, knows the lengths the country has gone in recent years to prevent events such as the current crisis. The military has been trained for years by the U.S., but many soldiers have laid down their weapons and fled in the face of the insurgents.
"They have nothing to fight for. Absolutely", says Allawi. "They [Sunnis] have been disenfranchised, they have been oppressed, the situation has been getting out of control gradually. The forces of extremes have been thriving in Iraq, they [militants] have frankly been killing one thousand people, on average, a month and the government was unable and is still unable to do anything about it".
Amanpour asked if we are seeing the end of Iraq as we know it.
"Probably", replied Allawi. "It depends how it's going to be handled. But I think we are moving to a Syrianization kind of situation".
Are we moving in the direction of partition?
"Very possibly", said Allawi.
Is Baghdad, Iraq's capital, at risk?
"The belt of Baghdad has fallen". Allawi stated. "The outskirts are under the control of the armed people, the militants, the Sunni militants... The government of Baghdad is unable to challenge this, the government is unable to prevent explosions inside Baghdad."

Iraqi Kurdish forces say they have taken full control of the northern oil city of Kirkuk as the army flees before an Islamist offensive nearby.
"The whole of Kirkuk has fallen into the hands of peshmerga," Kurdish spokesman Jabbar Yawar told Reuters. "No Iraq army remains in Kirkuk now."
Kurdish fighters are seen as a bulwark against Sunni Muslim insurgents.
Meanwhile, Iraq's parliament has postponed a vote on a call by PM Nouri Maliki for a state of emergency.
The fall of Mosul, the country's second city, to the Islamists sent shockwaves across the Middle East.
Kirkuk and the surrounding province of Tamim are at the heart of a political and economic dispute between Iraq's Arabs and Kurds.

As many as 500,000 people have been forced to flee the Iraqi city of Mosul after hundreds of Islamist militants took control of it, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) says.
Troops were among those fleeing as the jihadists from the ISIS group took the city and much of Nineveh province.
The head of the Turkish mission in Mosul and dozens of consulate officials have been seized.
PM Nouri Maliki has asked parliament to declare a state of emergency.
The US said the development showed ISIS was a threat to the entire region.
Led by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIS), the insurgents are believed to be planning to push further south, to the capital Baghdad and regions dominated by Iraq's Shia Muslim majority, whom they regard as "infidels".
But it appears the insurgents want to avoid tangling with Iraqi Kurds - a more cohesive fighting force - in provinces bordering Nineveh province where Mosul is located, the BBC's Jim Muir reports from Kurdish-run Irbil.
A new insurgent offensive could come from the west, where they control the city of Falluja, 69km (43 miles) from Baghdad, our correspondent adds.
Washington says it is considering further assistance to Iraq in fighting the militants, without giving details.

"Fed-induced wealth effect raw deal for 99%: Piketty"
Jump-starting economic growth has relied too much on the Federal Reserve and not enough on fiscal policy, said French economist Thomas Piketty, author of the book on wealth inequality "Capital in the Twenty-First Century."
"Those who are gaining from all this printing of money are not the people that you'd like to gain," Piketty said Monday on CNBC. "You certainly need to ask more of these top income groups who got between two-thirds and three-quarters of aggregate income growth over the past 30 years in this country."
In the interview on CNBC's "Squawk Box," he did acknowledge the important role the Fed, and central banks around the world, played in preventing a complete collapse of the financial system following the 2008 crisis. "[But] we've been asking too much of creative monetary policy."
"If you have a progressive tax on income and wealth, you have a better sense of who's paying," Piketty continued. "And you have a better sense of where the money is going, and whether you have an equitable distribution of the burden."
"If the growth performance of the U.S. economy had been exceptional, you know, 4 percent growth rate, 5 percent growth rate, then it would be OK. Everybody would get something," he said.
"But if you have relatively mediocre growth performance ... and three-quarters of [the wealth] gets to the top, it's not a good deal for the middle class and the rest of the population."

China is "creating facts on the ground" in the South China Sea, Vietnam's Ambassador to the U.S. Nguyễn Quốc Cường told CNN's Christiane Amanpour on Wednesday.
At question is an area of the South China Sea near the Paracel Islands; China this month installed an oil rig in an area both countries claim as their own.
This week a Chinese boat rammed and sunk a Vietnamese fishing boat near the oil rig; and in Vietnam, violent riots against the Chinese have forced Beijing to evacuate thousands of its workers.
"China is trying to turn [an] undisputed area into a disputed area. And that is unacceptable," Nguyễn Quốc Cường said.

"Commentary: Vietnam is solely responsible for latest maritime standoff with China"
BEIJING, May 16 (Xinhua) -- The standoff between China and Vietnam in the South China Sea since May 2 has once again gripped global attention.
The United States wasted no time before rushing to blame China for so-called "provocative" actions.
The narrative all sounds too familiar: a rising China has become increasingly assertive in maritime disputes and constantly bullied its smaller neighbors.
But this narrative is, as it has always been, fundamentally flawed.
The area in focus is in the continuous zone of China's Xisha Islands, over which Beijing, with sound historical and legal proof, has long claimed sovereignty.
China has been preparing for drilling in the area for the last decade. The location is just 17 nautical miles from China's Zhongjian Island and some 130 to 150 nautical miles from Vietnam's coast.
Things turned sour only after Vietnamese ships and personnel repeatedly tried to disrupt the normal operations by a Chinese oil company.
In the following days, China has to beef up protection of the site.
Vietnam's stubbornness in harassing the Chinese oil rig runs huge risk, putting the safety of both the Chinese and Vietnamese personnel in jeopardy. It could also lead to unforeseeable and deadly consequences.
It is rather unwise for Vietnam to stoke up tensions in the South China Sea at this moment.
China values its ties with Vietnam. That's why Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, during his visit to Hanoi last October, worked relentlessly with Vietnamese leaders to comprehensively push forward bilateral cooperation over land, in the sea and in the financial sector.
But Vietnam has to understand China, while seeking win-win cooperation, will never sacrifice its sovereignty in the process.
At the same time, Vietnam's failure to rein in deadly mob attacks against foreign nationals and investment serves the country no good.
It tarnishes Vietnam's international image and undermines the government's credibility. Such chaos could easily spread and pose a real threat to Vietnam's own stability and national security.
China has never meant to create trouble in the South China Sea, but the country is not afraid of any trouble other countries might try to make in the region.
NHK has obtained new video footage from Vietnam's maritime police that shows ongoing tension between Vietnam and China in the South China Sea.
The video was shot from a Vietnamese maritime police vessel over the past week, in waters southwest of the Paracels.
The Vietnamese side uses a loudspeaker to urge Chinese ships to leave the area.
Chinese vessels are seen coming up beside the much smaller Vietnamese boats to spray water and chase them around.
The video also shows a Chinese ship ramming a Vietnamese boat from behind and damaging it.
Airplanes and helicopters believed to be Chinese are seen flying low over Vietnamese ships.

The pet races to the rescue and launches herself at a dog mauling a four-year-old boy outside a family home in California.
A tabby cat has been hailed a hero by her owners after saving their four-year-old son from a vicious dog attack.
Tara's bravery was captured on a home CCTV system and quickly went viral when the footage was posted on the internet.
Some viewers questioned whether she had put the title "man's best friend" in contention after sprinting to defend Jeremy Triantafilo from a dog much larger than herself.
The little boy was riding his bicycle in front of his home in Bakersfield, California, when a neighbour's dog appeared to stalk him.
The animal ran up from behind and attacked him, leaving a deep leg wound, which needed 10 stitches.
Out of nowhere, Tara flew at the dog and sent it running off down the road.

"The American Middle Class Is No Longer the World's Richest"
By David Leonhardt and Kevin Quealy
APRIL 22, 2014
The American middle class, long the most affluent in the world, has lost that distinction.
While the wealthiest Americans are outpacing many of their global peers, a New York Times analysis shows that across the lower- and middle-income tiers, citizens of other advanced countries have received considerably larger raises over the last three decades.
After-tax middle-class incomes in Canada — substantially behind in 2000 — now appear to be higher than in the United States. The poor in much of Europe earn more than poor Americans.
The numbers, based on surveys conducted over the past 35 years, offer some of the most detailed publicly available comparisons for different income groups in different countries over time. They suggest that most American families are paying a steep price for high and rising income inequality.

For energy companies focused on Middle East and North Africa, Algeria may be emerging as a bright spot for investment. Oil production from Libya has nearly doubled since December, but its output is far below the 1.6 million bpd from before the civil war. Frontier areas off the coast of West Africa, meanwhile, are generating attention, but development there is years away.
Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who steered his country through civil war and the Arab Spring relatively unscathed, said presidential elections are scheduled for April. If the 76-year-old incumbent chooses to run, he'd almost certainly be handed a fourth term in office. If he doesn't, political transition should be relatively smooth nonetheless.
Unlike its neighbors, Algeria experienced its own turmoil decades ago and the political elite can't risk another back slide. For foreign energy companies waiting in the wings, Algeria's evolution may be the best option for an otherwise questionable regional market.

Every year, Americans upgrade their TVs, cell phones, computers and other electronic devices at a breathtaking pace. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that the U.S. produces 300 million tons of electronic waste annually. About 80 percent of that ends up in domestic landfills or is "recycled" overseas in hazardous conditions.
Disposing of e-waste legally and responsibly has been a political and a practical headache for years. And a growing appetite for consumerism around the world is only fueling the problem.

As the search for Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 drags on without a trace of wreckage at sea, the likelihood of foul play looms larger. One country keeps rising to the top of the list of suspects: Pakistan.
Ten days after the flight vanished, LIGNET learned that engineers at Boeing, the plane's manufacturer, believed the missing aircraft was on the ground in Pakistan. For several reasons, including al-Qaeda's presence there, historical attack patterns, corruption, weakness and terrorist sympathies at the highest levels inside Pakistan, that hunch may be right.

"For the first time in three years property prices in 36 of the 100 cities surveyed actually declined. There have been some really hefty discounts. Some developers have cut prices, some up to 25%. The truth is market forces have finally caught up with the property market.
There has been a terrible oversupply of flats in China. Everywhere you see ghost cities with no people living there. The ordinary citizens are not buying flats because there is no return. There are enough flats to supply the market for the next 5 years. I think they will even stop lending to the property sector to avoid this terrible oversupply.
You have miles of ghost cities all over China! They have to do something to correct it. This year many of the heavily indebted developers will go under. After the decline of the property sector you will have the fall of the bond sector. The heavily indebted ones will not be able to survive. That will be a good thing actually."

Concerns are mounting that government control of information may impact freedom of speech and citizens' right to know. Toxic waste 'major global threat'
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-24994209
More than 200 million people around the world are at risk of exposure to toxic waste, a report has concluded.
The authors say the large number of people at risk places toxic waste in a similar league to public health threats such as malaria and tuberculosis.
The study from the Blacksmith Institute and Green Cross calls for greater efforts to be made to control the problem.
The study carried out in more than 3,000 sites in over 49 countries.
"It's a serious public health issue that hasn't really been quantified," Dr Jack Caravanos, director of research at the Blacksmith Institute and professor of public health at the City University of New York told the BBC's Tamil Service.
The study identified the Agbobloshie dumping yard in Ghana's capital Accra as the place which poses the highest toxic threat to human life.
The researchers say that the report has not been hidden from governments, and they are all aware of the issue.
Agbobloshie has become a global e-waste dumping yard, causing serious environmental and health issues Dr Caravanos explained.
The study says that "a range of recovery activities takes place in Agbobloshie, each presenting unique occupational and ecological risks".
As the second largest e-waste processing area in West Africa, Ghana annually imports around 215,000 tonnes of second hand consumer electronics from abroad, particularly from Western Europe, and generates another 129,000 tons of e-waste every year.
The study warns that that Ghana's e-waste imports will double by 2020.
At the Agbobloshie site, the study found the presence of lead in soil at very high levels, posing serious potential health and environment hazards to more than 250,000 people in the vicinity.

A four-megaton nuclear bomb was one switch away from exploding over the US in 1961, a newly declassified US document confirms.
Two bombs were on board a B-52 plane that went into an uncontrolled spin over North Carolina - both bombs fell and one began the detonation process.
The document was first published in the UK's Guardian newspaper.
The US government has acknowledged the accident before, but never made public how close the bomb came to detonating.
The document was obtained by journalist Eric Schlosser under the Freedom of Information Act.

A member of the SAS who helped save hundreds of lives when he killed two terrorists during an attack in Kenya will be honoured.
The soldier will be given the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross bravery medal after he intervened when al-Shabaab militants raided Nairobi's DusitD2 hotel on January 15.
The unnamed man helped to bring the bloodshed to an end after 21 people had been murdered in the gun and grenade assault, including British victim Luke Potter.
He had entered the hotel complex by himself and killed two of the terrorists after US Navy Seals requested his help when they were told to wait for permission to enter, the Sun reported.

"Druckenmiller: Fed robbing poor to pay rich"
19 Sep 2013
The Federal Reserve isn't just inflating markets but is shifting a massive amount of wealth from the middle class and poor to the rich, according to billionaire hedge fund manager Stanley Druckenmiller.
In an interview on "Squawk Box," the founder of Duquesne Capital said the Fed's policy of quantitative easing was inflating stocks and other assets held by wealthy investors like himself. But the price of making the rich richer will be paid by future generations.
"This is fantastic for every rich person," he said Thursday, a day after the Fed's stunning decision to delay tightening its monetary policy. "This is the biggest redistribution of wealth from the middle class and the poor to the rich ever."
