Pans are friction fit into the foam template- if you want a travel safe setup, you may either want to tape in your pans, tape your palette shut, or hold it closed with a rubberband or 2 while in transit.Swatching in Lid:Not preactivatingAlmost all of these colors activate quickly with good color saturation. Gold is the exception, but since it was a new pan, it might've just been acting strangely? Yes, gold does need some preactivation, but then you can pick up a lot of it.Cottonrag Swatching:Notes in the full shownotesLift Test:These don't lift a whole lot, they're pretty staining/sticking, which is to be expected.Color Mixing:Optical Mixing: These layer ok, maybe a bit opaque for a lot of layering techniques.I would recommend not allowing water to really pool on these, because they'll get really soupy and you end up picking up more color than you want. Atomic Mixing: On this paper, colors go down fairly vibrant but dry very muted and desaturated.Honestly, I'm a bit surprised at how quick these dry and how light the mixes ended up being.Phoenix vs Phoenix:Notes are in full shownotes.Other gansai watercolors: Notes are in full shownotesEtegami FieldtestThese handle a lot like etegami/gansai watercolors. They also kinda remind me of the Mozart Komorebi watercolors that I used to use for etegami- I liked those because they handle like gansai and have a smaller footprint than the Gansai Tambi, but these have an even smaller footprint.For small, immediate pieces that don't require much color mixing and benefit from watercolors that activate very quickly, this palette might be a really good fit.Since gansai is painted more thickly, using these for gansai will run through them quickly.Even with etegami style- painted thickly on etegami postcard paper- these dry pretty desaturated and weak, esp compared to gansai watercolor.Pros and Cons:Pros:Fairly inexpensiveCompactSuper cuteCons:Challenging to find outside of AliExpressNon-standard pan size may be challenging to put these in a palette that suites you betterPans are small and somewhat shallow, you're going to run through the paint fastI feel like these aren't that saturatedWhile the color selection is a bit different The 48 regular set is a smidgen cheaper than the Chinese set, and they handle very similarlyDry pretty desaturatedThe Verdict:Initially, I was really charmed by these, but that was mostly due to the packaging. Travel & Professional Watercolor Palettes Becca Hillburn- Comic Artist 2023-06-04 | Shownotes:Way more info in the full shownotes: tinyurl.com/yc6j6ur6Professional Set:Get your own: tinyurl.com/5n8rwsknIn a loose plastic bagBlack enamel unhinged paint boxPlastic liner interior- better quality than I expectedPans are individually wrapped and labeledTravel brush seems half decentAll in all, kinda impressed so far.Travel Set:Get your own: tinyurl.com/3ecwkfupThe mini watercolor book is SO CUTE, but the perferation is like, a quarter of the page.The Gel Pen and the inking pens are kinda a joke- the inking pen STINKS like permanent marker, which most artists know isn't particularly archival.Professional SetList of colors in shownotesSwatching:Looks like there's a lot of optical brighteners in these, they shifted color quite a bit when spritzed with water.Color seems to flood into the wash area- not the soft gradient, but just a color fill, pretty similar to what I've seen with other dye-utilizing watercolors.These muddy the water fast and significantly, I'm changing the water b/w every 6 colors.The color layout of this palette doesn't really make sense to me chromatically, BUT you can opt to change the colors as you wish.I also find it surprising that this palette didn't come with a swatch sheet color map.These really look like they're dye based. That said, I feel like they ARE an improvement over that other SEamiArt set, but that set was AWFUL. Maybe I should challenge myself to try to paint something with a watercolor set I hate...Color mixing:Optical Mixing:Some of the colors reactibate and move rather than glazing. I guess they're not particularly watersafe.Atomic Mixing:Fairly easy to mix together good secondary color mixes.Lift Test:Yep, everything lifts about the same.Travel watercolor Set:Starting with their color mapSpritzed with waterSome color shift- optical brighteners?Because the swatch colors are next to each other, I'm alternating and giving the initial swatches time to dry.It's surprising that this kit came with a swatch card, but not the 'professional' set.The 'ochre' is weird, no granulation at all? Doesnt look like it has any opacity? This is a dye basd color for sure.I wanna note that if I dislike the colors in this set, I'm just going to pry them out and use the palette.So far, these seem pretty similar to the Seamiart 'professional' palette.Swatching on Cottonrag:They swatch ehh ok? I think they dried out some after swatching on their swatch card, because they're not as saturated and I hadn't bothered to reactivate them. Comparing the swatches side by side- I'll show yall later- I'm not actually sure these two really share a palette- there aren't many colors in common, which is kinda strange. I started with the neutrals, bc they were first in the set (saving the metallics for later), and like...These are just nasty? The way they granulate out, it's like they used a dye-based watercolor and then added a...something? to make it look like granulation- maybe charcoal? Or maybe they just, like, sedimented weird? I can't imagine painting something with this; it would ruin the faces.I'll change the angle so yall can see better, but I wanted to start by showing yall the swatches AND the palette.I have seen some YT shorts talking these up, and that's not why I bought them, but like, it definitely makes me feel like I must exist in an alternate universe because these are not good. These are really really bad. they glop up on the brush even after you've allowed them to dry for a while. The granulation, if you can even call it that, is almost entirely this weird black smutzh that kinda wrecks the color, and I'm betting these are dye based- there's no gradation in the color when you add water; the color just floods the swatch.The metallics handle basically the same as last time.Color Mixing:These are so muddy, and they muddy the water so fast and look muddy on the page, not even mixed. Honestly kinda hard to find what colors you're looking for because the masstones are so similar, but the swatches are fairly different (esp in the yellows)These mix so nasty. All of the colors look like the Van Gogh dusk colors. Pretty much ALL of these mixes look like mud, even mixes that are usually really vibrant.Do I even want to do wet into wet with this? Is it worth a piece of cotton-rag paper?Mini wet into wet testMan these are WEIRD. They all just crack when they hit water.Also, these take FOREVER to dry- they may have an unusual type of binderComparable Watercolors These are really bad, I mean, comparable to some of the worst watercolors I've reviewed during the Showdown. They're at least kinda uniquely bad- they aren't JUST dye-based, they aren't JUST full of optical brighteners, they don't JUST granulate muddily and strangely, and at least that makes them kinda amusing.Instead of focusing on a bunch of bad watercolors, instead, I'd like to recommend some watercolors you'll probably like better at a similar price. This isn't an all-inclusive list.Meiliang PigmentsSuperiorPhoenixPros:I can gut the case and use it for my daily driver palette, but that might mislead people into what's inside.
