The pilot was surveying the location where a crew of four was going to replace a pole that holds high voltage wire. The new pole has a wider spread between the wires.
Half an hour later, the helicopter returned, carrying two men. I ran out with my pocket zoom camera and snapped a few photos. By the time he returned with the second two men, I had grabbed my video camera. I couldn't see well in the sun, so the initial video is a little shaky. I then brought out a tripod and finally got better video.
The helicopter pilot's skill is absolutely amazing!Christmas 2020 VideoJohn Meyer2021-12-28 | I produced this just before Christmas 2020 when so many families decided to not get together. It reminded me that my parents, and their entire generation, went through far more hardships during WWII, and missed many more Christmases, birthdays, and holidays.
The song used for this video was composed during that time.Transfer Switch InstallationJohn Meyer2021-12-02 | This provides an overview of how I installed my Reliance transfer switch1941 Construction of the Buick Aviation Plant in Melrose Park, ILJohn Meyer2021-08-21 | This is a one hour promotional film showing the 1941 construction of the Buick Aviation Plant on North Avenue in the city of Melrose Park, Illinois. The facility was later operated by International Harvestor, then Navistar, and finally Tenneco/Case.
According to a person who commented on a short version of this film, "The Buick division of General Motors built Pratt & Whitney R-1830 engines at this facility during WW II. These radial aircraft engines would be used on Consolidated B-24 Liberator bombers being built at the Willow Run, Michigan assembly plant operated by the Ford Motor Company. "
I have a short "before/after" restoration featurette for this film which can be found here:

The recording starts in the 2nd half with Boston leading 62-48 and ends with the score 97-89 (the recording disk had filled up).Sodastream Dry Ice RechargeJohn Meyer2020-10-04 | As of September 2020, I can no longer find any Sodastream cartridges in Central California. I was aware that you can recharge a Sodastream cartridge using dry ice, but couldn't be bothered.
Now I actually need to do it.
Fortunately it is stupidly easy.
While there are lots of tutorials which show how to do this, I thought I'd create one that is streamlined, showing just the essentials. It took me less than ten minutes, start to finish, to recharge my first canister. My next one will take closer to five minutes.
The dry ice cost $2.19/pound at Safeway. You need one pound per canister (you actually add 14.5 oz), plus an extra pound to cover the waste and sublimation that happens before the dry ice is in the canister. So if you have four canisters, get 5-6 pounds, depending on how long it takes to drive home. I put the dry ice in a small cooler, as you see in the video. There was still a little bit left the next morning, twelve hours later, so if you start your work within an hour of buying the dry ice, you should still have plenty left.1972 Studio City ParadeJohn Meyer2020-07-16 | Super 8 amateur film of the 1972 holiday parade in Studio City, California1931 Wiley Post Around the World, McKinley Airport, Cleveland, OhioJohn Meyer2020-06-16 | This is never before seen silent 16mm amateur film, from a private collection, showing an air show event at the McKinley Airport outside of Cleveland Ohio in 1931. At the 2:57 mark you will see the famous "Winnie Mae" airplane, and a few seconds later you will see its pilot, Wiley Post, emerge from the cockpit. The side of the airplane is painted with the text "Around the World." Since Post does not yet have an eye patch in this film, this means that this was taken during his first successful flight around the world with co-pilot Harold Gatty (Wiley Post later repeated the feat, but solo). The flight plan for this circumnavigation does show that the plane stopped in Cleveland just before completing the 'round the world trip. He returned from Cleveland to his starting point in New York, thus completing the around the world trip.
The "Winnie Mae" airplane now hangs in the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum.1947 Tournament of Roses ParadeJohn Meyer2020-06-16 | This is silent 8mm movie footage of the Tournament of Roses Parade which was held in Pasadena, California on January 1, 1947.
The music is "A Jam Session at Victor" by Jack Teagarden's Big Eight. This was recorded just a few months after the parade on March 14, 1947. Because it was an "on the spot" improvisation, it was probably never performed again.2019 Ballet Fantasque Nutcracker HighlightsJohn Meyer2020-01-01 | These are highlights from the December 22, 2019 production of The Nutcracker, performed by Ballet Fantasque of Pacific Grove, California. I used higher-quality stainless bearings in order to upgrade my blender. This means the quality is better than the original and should last longer and run smoother. You can use lower-quality bearings, like those in the original blade, and do this repair for less money than the replacement extractor blade assembly.
If you want to purchase the exact bearing that I bought, here's a direct link:

I shot myself sitting in the chair for thirty seconds. I then got up and moved in front of the door. I put the entire clip on the main timeline, and then created a copy of the portion of that clip where I was standing against the wall. I used a simple mask on the first video to let the second video show through on the right side of the picture. I created a second version of the initial video without that mask and then faded it into the one with the mask. This created the effect of me disappearing.

These film clips were taken between 1935 and 1955 using 16mm silent film (there is no sound). Restoration steps included dirt removal; color correction; brightness and contrast adjustment; motion stabilization (to remove both camera shake and film gate weave); sharpness improvement; grain reduction; and flicker elimination.
The software and the techniques used to achieve these results are discussed in these long threads at "doom9.org":
