In this recording, everything except the subcontrabassoon is synthesized, but people from all over the world are submitting acoustic recordings of their parts as we speak.I thought this excerpt worked well as an illustration because it's soft and covers a fairly wide range; from notes that are possible on contrabassoon but which have a distinctly different tone on subcontrabassoon, all the way down to pitches that are unique to the subcontrabassoon. Thank you, ZenTuner! Richard Bobo 2022-06-08 | I've been struggling with finding a tuner that reliably picks up the subcontrabass register, and I finally found one that seems to work down to C0 without much trouble: ZenTuner. Not only that, but it's free and open-source! And because the source code is available on the project's GitHub page (github.com/jpsim/ZenTuner), I was even able to modify my personal version to (somewhat) work even lower. There are still some tweaks I'd like to make to the display (labeled 5¢ increments rather than unlabeled 4¢ increments), and the function (I think if I could get it to use a larger sample size and update less regularly, it would be less noisy in the lowest range), but I'm extraordinarily relieved to find something that broadly works and that allows me to so easily make changes to better suit my admittedly niche needs! Huge thanks to the whole ZenTuner team!

Hopefully, it goes without saying that the fate of a 15-year-old video game is not the highest priority right now; not even in the top 100. Democracy faces existential threats; both externally (as in Ukraine) and internally (as in the US). Children and educators are being gunned down in the classroom, white supremacy has moved from a dog whistle to a mainstream political position, and even our autonomy over our own bodies is under threat (at least, it is if you have a uterus). But I reject the bad-faith whataboutisism that pretends to tell us that we're only allowed to care about one problem at a time, when its true goal is for us to ignore every problem. So I hope you all continue to work to make the world a better, safer, more equitable place. And if after all that, you have any mental energy left over, maybe spread some awareness for a silly but beloved video game. No matter how bad things may be, art and entertainment still matter.

Unfortunately, I didn't have any luck finding something that worked within the limitations of the prototype in its current state. So you all are getting something very unusual; a completely unironic and sincere original composition. I'm not much of a composer, but I actually ended up pretty happy with this piece.The title "Von der Tiefwissenshaft" is a reference to the famous "Von der Wissenschaft" ("of science/learning") section from Strauss's Also Sprach Zarathustra. With the addition of "tief", it fittingly becomes "of deep science".
