And we were in Maryland somewhere driving under a freeway sign that said Silver Springs [sic]. And I loved the name… Silver Springs sounded like a pretty fabulous place to me. And ‘You could be my silver springs’ – that’s just a whole symbolic thing of what you could have been to me."The “sic” refers to the town of “Silver Spring” (ergo the ‘sic’), located in Maryland near Washington, D.C.Stevie reworked this song in the late 70s and hoped to include it on Fleetwood Mac's Rumours in 1977,but its length exceeded the capacity of the vinyl record format since all the other songs had already been chosen.There wasn't enough room for it.At nearly five minutes long, "Silver Springs" was too long to fit comfortably on a vinyl record without compromising audio quality,so the band decided to include "I Don't Want to Know," a shorter song also written by Nicks about her relationship with Lindsey Buckingham,to fill the album's space. Stevie Nicks was very upset by this decision and vehemently opposed it,as she considered "Silver Springs" to be a powerful,masterpiece-level song,and a superior and deeply personal song that deserved a place on the album.She described the situation as having "a gun to my head" to sing "I Don't Want to Know". "Silver Springs" was relegated to the B-side of the "Go Your Own Way" single from Rumours. Later,Stevie Nicks wanted to include the song "Silver Springs" on her compilation album Timespace:The Best of Stevie Nicks,believing it was a strong and essential part of her work.Mick Fleetwood,however,blocked this,stating that the song was slated for a forthcoming Fleetwood Mac release,the box set 25 Years – The Chain.Fleetwood felt the song was in high demand for a Fleetwood Mac release,as it had only been a B-side to "Go Your Own Way,"and he believed its inclusion on a Fleetwood Mac project was a priority.Stevie felt it was unfair and that was a major factor in her leaving Fleetwood Mac in 1990.Stevie Nicks responded by telling Fleetwood's manager that if she didn't get the tapes for the song by Monday,she would no longer be a member of Fleetwood Mac,and she kept her word when Fleetwood wouldn't budge.The song appeared on the Fleetwood Mac box set,and Stevie was replaced by Bekka Bramlett until around 1994.The conflict was put to rest years later,when the band reunited in 1997 and recorded a live version of "Silver Springs" for the album The Dance,where it became a hit single,reaching #41 on the US Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart. After years of being unreleased on a Fleetwood Mac studio album,Mick and Stevie made up and the Buckingham Nicks lineup of Fleetwood Mac reunited and a live version of "Silver Springs"was featured on the band's 1997 album The Dance,which brought the song significant popularity and a Grammy nomination.A version of "Silver Springs" was eventually added as a bonus track to the 2004 remastered edition of Rumours.Stevie Nicks also included it on her own 2007 retrospective,Crystal Visions… The Very Best of Stevie Nicks.
