Gas WorksDucted evaporative cooling is an effective way to cool your home in the hot and dry climate of Adelaide. This type of cooling system relies on a simple yet effective process to provide your home with cool, refreshing air.
First, warm outside air is drawn into the evaporative cooler by a fan. As it passes through wet filter pads, the air causes the water to evaporate. This process expels any hot air that was present in the air, leaving behind cooled air. A ventilation fan then directs this cooled air through the ducts in your home, effectively cooling the entire space.
If you’re interested in installing a ducted evaporative cooling system in your home, visit a local store and speak with Adelaide’s evaporative air conditioning specialists. Brands like Braemar, Breezair, and Coolair offer a range of ducted evaporative cooling solutions that can be tailored to your specific needs. At Gas Works, we can help you find the air conditioning solution that works best for you.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF EVAPORATIVE COOLERS? Ducted evaporative air conditioners have a number of benefits that will help to keep you comfortably cool year after year while keeping your running costs down.
Fresh Air: Ducted evaporative air conditioners work by drawing in outside air from the roof unit and using cooling pads to lower it’s temperature. This means that you’re always breathing in cool fresh air which is distributed through the house via ducting in the roof cavity. Odours in the home are also eliminated as the stale inside air is replaced every 2 to 3 minutes. What’s more, the hotter the air outside the better your ducted evaporative air conditioning system will work.
Affordability: Ducted evaporative cooling systems are one of the most cost efficient methods for cooling your home. In fact, statistics show that they can be up to eight times cheaper to run that refrigerated systems.
Enviromentally friendly: Evaporative ducted air conditioner use water instead of refrigerant gas to help with the cooling system. This means that you can enjoy the benefits of cool air while looking after the environment.

As the earth’s most plentiful source of energy, the sun holds enormous promise as a clean and dependable way to power our world.
When the radiant energy of the sun is converted to heat and electricity, it can provide energy to residences and businesses, and even power vehicles.
Now might be a good time to learn about the benefits of solar energy and explore adding a solar energy system to your home. Then you can decide: Is solar energy worth it?
When considering home energy options, it is important to understand how solar energy works. When sunlight hits a solar panel, a photovoltaic cell turns that light into direct current (DC) electricity. An inverter then converts it to alternating current (AC), which is what most devices in your home use.
1. Solar energy is a renewable energy source and reduces carbon emissions
2. Solar energy can reduce your home’s electricity billWhy ducting is important in your air conditionerGas Works2021-05-05 | Ducting is important in your air conditioner because it prevents air contamination. It's job is to filter exterior air as filtering removes dust, dirt, pollen, and other air contaminants so that you will have a healthy and comfortable atmosphere.
If the air ducts are leaking, then these contaminants are also leaking into your house.
Ductwork channels conditioned air to vents, takes return air back into the system and transports exhaust air and waste heat to the exterior of your home.
Ducts serve a triple purpose: They carry warmth in winter, hold cool air in summer and provide ventilation for better indoor air quality throughout the year.

There are pros and cons for both. If you live in metropolitan Adelaide then there is an extremely good chance that there is gas running past your front door which you have access to economical gas for heating. The combination of ducted evaporative air cooling and ducted gas heating is an excellent marriage. (watch the Better Living Video titled Ducted Gas Heating and Evaporative Air Conditioning http://gasworks.net.au/the-better-living-blog/ducted-gas-heating-evaporative-air-conditioning-video ).
Evaporative systems offer great cooling qualities at a very economical running price. The cost to run a state of the art Breezair or Braemar evaporative system equated to the same as running a light globe. Another advantage of evaporative systems is that they constantly draw in fresh air and expel the old air rather than recycling the same air. Gas Works are Climate Masters of Seeley International and as such are experts when it comes to evaporative air conditioning. They offer an exclusive 7 year warranty on the unit and the installation so you can invest in your home with total peace of mind. With Gas Works being in SA for over 25 years you know it’s a name you can trust.
If you don’t have access to gas or you want the convenience of a single system then ducted reverse cycle is for you. A reverse cycle system will both warm and cool your home at the touch of a button. A reverse cycle system as the name suggests recycles the cool/warm air around the home. To run the system most effectively it is best to keep all external door and windows shut. It is important to invest in a quality unit. You will find that reverse cycle systems are covered by the energy star ratings. The more star the more efficient the system. Gas Works have access to all major brands and are Panasonic Air Specialist Network Dealers which tells you they fully qualified to design and install system that is right for your home. Selecting the right size system is critical to the efficiency and effectiveness of the air conditioner. Too small a system and it will struggle to cool/heat your home, too big a system and your running cost will be higher than necessary. We still have one third of summer still to come and we all know that March can also be hot. While we are currently experiencing some milder days just now, don’t lulled into a false sense of security. When the temperature soars some people will do anything to get cool, as the video shows.
So you are thinking about air conditioning your home here are some things to think about:
1 - Decision time – There are a number of different types of air conditioning from portable systems to fully ducted reverse cycle systems.
Which will be best for you? You first need to decide what your needs are and what sort of budget you have. Your home is, for most, the biggest investment you have, so if you have the budget don’t scrimp. However if you only have a few hundred to spend then a portable unit may be better than nothing. It least it will allow you to sleep at night.
Next step up is a single room High Wall Spilt System Room air conditioner or an in window unit. While these will not cool multiple rooms it will effectively cool the intended area. From here your next step up is a ducted system and here again there are choices. You can select from either an evaporative system or refrigerated reverse cycle. Now there are pros and cons for each. Reverse cycle will heat you home in winter as well as cool it in summer. Evaporative systems are cheaper to buy and run however will only cool you home. (see What is Evaporative Air Conditioning video - youtube.com/watch?v=I6zWu_kd7t0) however evaporative can be teamed with ducted gas heating. ( see Ducted Gas Heating and Evaporative Air Conditioning video - youtube.com/watch?v=WB5TrpAoaTI)
2 - Size – Yes it does matter when it comes to air conditioning. Too small a unit will struggle on the really hot days so far better to get a system that can cope than spend a less and be disappointed ( see What size air conditioning do I need video)
3 – It’s in the stars – Energy star ratings are there to guide you as to the efficiency of the unit. Remember no point in having an air conditioning system if you can’t afford to run. For argument sake you may need a 6kw system to cool your home now the price will vary between brands. As a rule of thumb the cheaper the unit the less efficient it will be. (see Energy Star Rating video - youtube.com/watch?v=6vaCUBJJKmU)
4 – Shop around – The only way you’ll if a price is realistic is if you shop around however it is critical that you compare apples with apples.
5 – Talk to those who install systems as well as sell them. The so called box moves just want to sell you a unit, where as someone who is going to sell you the unit and install it too has a vested interest in making sure you are buying the right unit in the first place. Is your house going to be a Sauna today?Gas Works2016-01-18 | Gas Works have great deals on air conditioning.

www.gasworks.net.auBetter Living - What are Energy Smart Delivery Systems?Gas Works2015-06-29 | So you’ve done your research and decided on the type of air conditioning system you want for your home. If you’re going for ducted reverse cycle then you would have likely come to the conclusion that Panasonic is a great choice. If you’re thinking about the many benefits of evaporative, then you’ll have found they don’t come any better than a Breezair.
But have you given any thought as to what type of delivery system is best for your situation? Now, if your like many people, you probably haven’t given this a second thought.
But when you consider that the transfer process can impact system efficiency - and running costs - by up to 30%, then you might just want to take a deeper look. It all comes down to basic thermal physics. The air conditioner produces the cold air and the delivery system transfers the air from the unit into the room. Now if you’ve ever been into a roof space during summer you know it can get incredibly hot - in fact it can reach up to 65 degrees and so the better the delivery system the cooler the air arrives. Naturally the same thing applies to warm air in winter.
So what makes for good delivery system? Firstly no air leaks. There’s no point in spending money to cool or warm air just to have it escape into the roof space.
Then, there’s the insulation properties. You‘ve insulated the ceiling and walls so it makes sense that the delivery system is also well insulated. Standard polyester ducting has an ‘R’ rating of 1. The Ductair Energy Smart delivery system is rated at R1.5 and has been independently university tested. The research shows that these thermos dynamics can reduce peak power needs by up to 30%. In simple terms, that means that your air conditioning unit is more efficient in both cooling in summer or warming in winter, which in turn means less power use over the year and a longer life expectancy for the unit, which is good news around.
It also means a reduction in carbon emissions – and that’s VERY cool.
Another important element in a reverse cycle delivery system is the filter. Reverse cycle is a ‘sealed system’ that draws air from inside your home through the filter located behind the return air intake grill The air is then cooled or heated inside the unit and then blown back through the delivery system into your home. This means the same air is constantly recycled.Better Living - Star ratings what do they mean?Gas Works2015-06-22 | Have you got stars in your eyes when it comes to buying appliances. What do the star ratings really mean? Check out this episode of Gas Works Better Living
Transcript: Hi and welcome to better living with Gasworks. When you were at school and you did well you got a gold star and that was something to aspire too. Today manufactures aspire to get stars for their energy efficiency. We have all seen the stickers on appliances but what do they mean.
I guess it's pretty obvious the more Stars displayed on a sticker such as this the better the energy rating. The stars are designed to be a quick reference the important information are the numbers in the red box.
Energy consumption numbers give you an indication as to the projected annual energy usage for the appliance, and usually in kilowatt-hours per year. Air conditioners are measured a little differently. If they are reverse cycle their energy consumption numbers are based on the estimated amount of energy used each hour separately for cooling and heating.
There are two types of labels. The standard 6 star label and then there is the 10 star label for super efficient products that rate 7 stars or more.
Now in most cases when comparing products you are most likely to find that the products that cost more rate better and here is where the kilowatts per hour come into play. If you are looking at a product that is going to get a lot of use then it be worth paying the extra to save in the long run.
Now here is a quick tip. It is estimated that an increase in one star means energy savings of 10 to 30% depending on the appliances being compared.
In most cases you are comparing one model or brand to another of the same type of appliance, with heating it's a little more tricky as you maybe comparing electric versus natural gas as they use different types of energy. Gas is measured in megajoules where as electricity is measured in kilowatts. If in doubt have a chat with your local Gasworks home heating specialist.

Watch our video on venting gas fires.
If you have an existing chimney, it may be used to vent your new gas fire. If you don't, a special top-venting pipe can be installed to vent your appliance out to the atmosphere. Find out more below
Script: We all love the warmth of a fire but if you can't be bothered lugging wood and cleaning ashes -- gas works better.
Gas fireplaces create a cosy home, add a touch of romance, provide a constant supply of fuel which you can turn off and on at the flick of a switch.
And of course they are also clean burning, more energy efficient than wood and better for the environment.
Beautiful options include freestanding gas log fires, Space Heaters, wall mounted gas Furnace's and built in gas log fires, but whatever appliance you choose, good venting should be a priority.
With a traditional wood burning fireplace, dangerous gases go up the chimney -- this is the case with most gas fires which are vented so that gases also travel outside during the burn.
If you have a traditional hearth and chimney, The chimney may be able to be used to vent your new gas fire. Don't worry if you don't have a chimney, because a special top-venting pipe can be installed to vent your appliance out to the atmosphere.
Another safe option is direct venting which uses a 2-layer pipe running through a hole in the wall behind the unit, or is positioned slightly above it. The outer pipe draws air in from the outside to create combustion for burning the gas, while the inner pipe takes waste to the outside. With a direct vent gas fireplace, carbon monoxide build-up is minimised as combustion gases have very little chance of escaping from the firebox into your home. So which gas fireplace will work best for you?
Built In, these are usually installed during a home building or renovation project.
Free Standing These resemble the traditional wood burning stoves and are most effective as a source of heat because all surfaces are exposed. Space Heaters and Wall Furnaces, these are attached to the wall and offer effective and affordable heating.
Whatever style of gas heater you choose, talk to the specialists at your nearest Gas Works Showroom about professional installation to ensure energy efficiency and safety.Better Living - Gas log Fires, how do I choose?Gas Works2014-05-19 | Sure we'd love a Gas Log fire but we need to know how efficient they are and what works best. Thankfully, today we have better ways to enjoy a snuggly fire on a wintry night, beautiful gas fireplaces that are so realistic, you can't tell the glowing red embers and flickering flames that dance around the ceramic fibre logs, from the real thing.
You have a choice of 3 types, starting with Free Standing for those who like the nostalgic charm of a wood-burning firebox, yet want something more convenient and efficient. Built-ins, for people who want a fireplace where one doesn't exist. And then there are Space Heaters and Wall Furnaces. While not so aesthetically pleasing to look at, they still offer the efficiency of gas for the budget conscious.
If you want to fill your room with a mix of warm air and radiant heat, all three types are reliable heat producers, each type, gives you a choice between models that vent the flames' fumes outside. It's simply a matter of choosing which type works best for you and your personal space. And it's not just about how good they look, it's about how efficient they are.
The best way to identify the true running costs of different types of gas fires is by comparing them "like for like" using the "input kilowatt rating".
The Energy Star ratings will help you here. The numbers displayed on the box show the energy consumption. Not only is gas a more affordable energy source, it's also kinder to the environment as it produces less carbon with some gas heater ratings close to 6 star efficiency, there is little doubt that gas heating is cheaper to run.
The amount of heat you require depends on the size of the room and how well insulated your house is.

Evaporative air conditioning is efficient and cost about the same power as a light bulb to run.
Transcript: Hi and welcome to better living with Gasworks.
In this episode we look at air conditioning and specifically evaporative air conditioning. Today's high tec units run quieter and more efficiently than ever before. But first let's look at how they work.
The unit is installed on the roof and today's unit are made from a UV stable polymer plastic, so they are lighter and don't rust. A centrally positioned fan draws in the hot air through pads. These pads are moistened by water and as the water evaporates it cools the air. The cool air is then pumped through ducting to cool your home. With refrigerated systems you need to keep all doors and windows shut as the air is recycled time and time again. With evaporative air conditioning your windows and doors open. The incoming cool air pushes the hot air out the open windows and door leaving you with a cool environment. This means your home has constant fresh air passing through it which of course is a much healthier option.
These systems work extremely well in most parts of Australia, with the exception of the top end.
With rising energy costs it's good to know that evaporative air conditioning is by far the most cost efficient system. It's cost about the same as running a light bulb which means you don't have to worry whether you can afford to run the air conditioning system. It is also far kinder to the environment leaving a far smaller carbon footprint.
Gasworks recommend Breezair designed and made in Australian by Seeley International an all Australian company so they are manufactured for our harsh conditions as well as keeping Australians employed.
So if you want to be cool without getting hot under the collar over electricity bills them an evaporative system may be just right for you.
One of the best things you can do is take the time to speak with the home climate solutions experts at your local Gasworks Showroom.
With years of experience in sales and installation, they know exactly what type of system will work better for you and is best suited to your needs and budget.

See why a gas continuous hot water system can give you hot water on demand while also saving you money.
Transcript:
Hi and welcome to better living. In this episode we take a look in more detail about Gas continuous flow hot water systems and why there are so popular.
As we mentioned in our previous program with the continuous flow hot water system you only heat the water you need at the time. Unlike the traditional tank system which heats water and then store it in a tank. Now this is generally done overnight but of course as time goes by the water loses temperature and requires re heating thus using more power to maintain its temperature.
Now you would have to think that these continuous flow systems run more economically than the old tank system and they do. Add to this they run on natural gas which means they are cheaper to run and create less green house gas emissions so they are better for the environment too.
Today's systems come from market leader such as Bosch and Rinnia and are extremely efficient and effective, unlike the old instant hot water systems these are state of the art design and functionality.
One of the best features of these units is the controllers. The controllers have the capability for to determine the temperature that comes out of the tap. Now that is great for those who like their showers hotter or cooler that someone else, but it can also prevent the sensitive skin of children from getting burn from hot water.
You can have more than one controller, say for argument sake what you live in a two story house you could have one downstairs and another upstairs or in multiple bathrooms and that's what makes these units so versatile.
So let's sum up. They run on natural gas which leaves less of a carbon footprint, they are more economical than electricity; there is less wasted hot water and now here is the really exciting part. There are generous rebates offered to those who change from electric systems to natural gas systems, so it's save, save, save and don't we love that.
Now whether you are replacing an existing unit or building a new home a natural gas continuous flow unit is the go. So drop into a Gasworks Showroom and have a chat with one of the gas specialist staff and see if a gas continuous hot water system would suit you and of course the Gasworks website has a lot of information too. Having hot water available on demand is an essential daily requirement for showering, cleaning, washing and bathing.
And it's not until we are without it, that we really appreciate the value of a good hot water system.
Unfortunately, when a Hot water system fails, it's usually without notice and, like so many of life's inconveniences, at the worst possible time!!
The natural response for many of us is to fix the problem as quickly as possible, which often means simply replacing the unit with the same model or size, by the first plumber who can get there!
But ironically, this little in home disaster is actually a great opportunity to save yourself money and make your more home energy efficient if you take the time to seek expert advice on what type of system to install and whether it is right to suit your needs.
There are many different options to choose from including Electric, Gas or Solar, storage or instantaneous to name a few.
And your decision will depend on a range of factors including your budget, your energy use and the demand needs in your home.
The traditional electric storage service heats the water, usually overnight, and then stores it ready for later use. With the rising price of electricity, this can be an expensive and inefficient option.
Solar systems are the cheapest and most environmentally friendly to run as they harness the suns power to heat the water, although they still require an additional electric or gas back-up to take over when there is insufficient sunlight.
A key consideration in choosing Solar is the large up-front costs -- although these will generally be recovered over time through reduced energy bills.
A Heat Pump System is another storage type system. Heat Pumps extract heat from the air or ground. They run on electricity and are about three times more efficient than the traditional electric storage system.
The catch with heat pump is you need the right environment to make them work effectively.
Continuous flow gas systems are very popular and economical to run as they only heat water when it is required. Being continuous, they never run out and have the added advantage of being able to set the temperature of the water to suit the specific need. This is ideal where young children are present as it reduces the risk of burns and it also helps to maintain efficient energy use.
Amongst all of these options is a vast array of models, shapes, sizes, quality, warranty and of course cost.
So which one do you choose? Continuous flow is reliable and convenient, but what if you don't have gas connected? Solar is a great option, but given the investment required you need to stay in that house for years to make it viable.

Hi and welcome to better living with Gasworks. I don't know about you but I hate being cold. I know that you can always put on another jumper and wrap yourself up but nothing beats a nice warm home in winter. With natural gas there a number of options. There are those beautiful gas log fires that look so warm and inviting. Then are space heaters and wall furnaces but for my money a whole of home solution is the way to go and that is exactly what you get with ducted gas heating.
Now a ducted system needed cost a fortune to run. Breamar from Seeley International an Australian company have created the world's first 6 star ducted gas heater.
Natural gas is clean burning so you don't get stuffy air that you get from reverse cycle heating. Natural gas heating also is more economical to run no matter how cold it gets. Research shows that natural gas produces just one third of the emissions of that of black coal generated electricity.
And when it gets really cold outside, reverse cycle systems lose efficiency, while Braemar ducted gas systems keep your home as warm as you want it -- no matter how cold it gets outdoors! Add to this that you can zone the system so you are only heating the rooms you need to heat and at the temperature you want.
There a number of systems you can buy and these range from 3 to 6 star systems. These units are mainly installed in the roof. The units can broken down into sections so they can easily fit through the return air opening as we see here and then re assembled in the roof space. Some people do have concerns about having a gas unit in the roof space but these concerns are unfounded as the system is very safe.
Now as I mentioned Breamar have produced a 6 star system. While these 6 star unit cost more initially, the running efficiency is such that they will pay for themselves over a period of time. The 6 star system runs around $370 a year cheaper than a 3 star system and produces 1.4 tonnes less of CO2 per year. To put that into perspective that is the same of taking a small car of the road. So not only will you be toastie warm but you're being kind to the environment.
