3DO Mortal Kombat 2 Port is Finally Finished
updated
I will continue to improve gameplay and fix bugs, uploading new versions of the ISO over the same link:
drive.google.com/file/d/1T3Q_iEix3_YPQzNXGK2pRRRxyVP76i8H/view?usp=drive_link
As of 06/07/2025 the ISO version is 10.05 with CPU AI 1.5
Special thanks to everyone on the 3DO discord server, Trapexit and 3dodev.com, @NEONBattleGlitch , @BushyStallion , @TruFunGames , and all the other testers and supporters.
Thanks for following along. Enjoy -

This required a complete rewrite of the memory allocation system, updates to the music thread, and thousands and thousands of new animation frames, audio samples, and general optimizations.
This vid showcases a sample of some of the finishing moves, captured on hardware.
I want to gather a few weeks of tester feedback before dropping another ISO to the public.
The game isn't totally "finished" yet, as it will still require tweaks and bug fixes... never mind the CPU AI... but it should be feature complete at this point.

Finishers will also be completely pause-free.
Additionally, memory handling has been completely re-written, fighter data tables have been offloaded to disc, a memory leak has been corrected, and finishers are on their way to being complete.
I'll be dropping an updated ISO soon. Enjoy -

After I get the seal of approval from some pro-level testers ( @BushyStallion and @TehDrewsus ) I will make this ISO available publicly. The same link will remain active for future updates and bug fixes as well.
Enjoy and stay tuned

The game feels and plays much smoother now.
There's only minor bug fixes remaining that I'm aware of and I will be making the first public ISO available to the 3DO community that never got this game 30 years ago but should have.
Enjoy and stay tuned

This video showcases all the bug fixes and gameplay improvements since the last vid. There's a handful of noticeable bugs left, but for the most part this port is close to finished.
You will hopefully notice how much performance has improved as well.
I will be dropping this ISO to only a limited handful of channels / testers before making available to the public for 1 last round of testing.
Thanks for watching and following along everyone!

I was capturing for myself for analysis and testing and figured I may as well upload to YT as well for anyone interested.
Anytime the 4th number exceeds 16700 (so 33000) is bad and needs to be identified and fixed. It seems to be several arenas specifically that may need to be further fine-tuned.
Also, several new bugs clearly identified relating to direction changes on Kung Lao's throw.

It also looks like performance has maybe taken a slight hit on a few arenas. So that's great. Definitely looking forward to this project being finished.
I was going to release another beta ISO, but there's still too many obvious bugs I need to fix first. Enjoy

Now that all the non-gameplay details have been completed I can actually focus on gameplay and bug fixes.
As far as I'm currently aware (through hours and hours and hours of mind-numbing stress testing) all memory leaks have been tracked down and corrected.
If you're interested in thoroughly beta testing please let me know. And please DO NOT share the beta ISO.
Thanks and enjoy!

He plays as Scorpion.
It does look pretty buggy but I expect a handful of fixes will correct the majority of issues here. There's also a little bit of slowdown on Goro's lair, but this is not running in official release mode. (Meaning there's still lots of behind the scenes things happening that don't need to be.)
Have to mention his new channel... where he plays minecraft. @sjthegamer14
Enjoy
Everything fits into ram... barely. All music is complete... What's left now is bug fixes, gameplay tuning, and finishing the remaining SFX. Once complete I plan on dropping a beta iso for testing.
Once that's complete - Post-match extras will be next. (Fighter by fighter fatalities, babalities, friendships, etc.)
#3do #mk2 #homebrew
Stay tuned for a limited release beta ISO for testing soon. All fighters are complete except Shang Tsung, Raiden, Shao Kahn, and Kintaro as of 08-24-2024.
Enjoy! And please like and subscribe to stay up to date on this project.
#3do #mk2 #blooperreel #homebrew
Also showing some different variations of arena backgrounds which I think look pretty good.
Next up - Improve how blood is handled in general and finish the rest of the fighters' specials. (5 to go.) Then time for early beta testing! Enjoy
#3do #mk2 #homebrew
Super concerning as the game would randomly exhibit odd behavior and under certain conditions crash the 3DO hardware. (Living Forest arena on the 2nd reload, battle plan mode fight 2, and eventually after several fights on casual mode as well.)
About 40 instances of tiny memory leaks have been identified and corrected... Same with a major issue regarding unloading / reloading P2 SFX in 1P mode. In this vid I show how I tracked down where another major issue was occurring, and what the fix was... then confirmed by testing on hardware.
It's tricky because I don't have (and don't know if anyone even has) a proper 3DO dev unit. (Not that I would care to have one anyway honestly...)
Maybe a bit boring - but good news these issues were tracked down and corrected.
#3do #mk2 #homebrew #debugging
Showing specials and projectiles for Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Johnny Cage, Reptile, Kitana, Baraka, and Scorpion as well as alt palettes and arena variations.
Once all of the fighter specials / projectiles are finished and I've gotten the 3 arena fatalities working I will drop a limited test ISO to a handful of users for early beta testing.
If anyone has any interest I am planning on posting another dev vid as well showing the behind the scenes coding and gameplay logic.
Thanks everyone!
Shaun
Still generally running at 60fps as well, though I believe there is a memory leak occurring after the Pit 2 arena fatality is triggered.
Apologies for the poor audio quality - I'm not great at recording, talking, editing, etc.
Enjoy!
PS - I told my son I would mention his channel once I hit 1k subscribers. Check out @sjthegamer14 ( youtube.com/@sjthegamer14 ) for Minecraft and Geometry Dash videos.
Thanks everyone!

Hitboxes and attack-boxes have been added but still need to be tweaked a bit on a few fighters. General gameplay has been significantly improved. Jump attacks now change direction as expected like in the arcade version.
Except when the 50% trans hit and attack boxes are visible the game still runs almost constantly at 60 fps, though there is still a bit of optimization left to be done.
1p mode is mostly done but needs a bit of tightening up. You'll notice the wrong fighter is selected for example towards the end of the vid.
I'm too tired to write a proper description, so here's one from Chat GPT:

Very quickly realize my brain is not working right, so cut the first vid off short a couple days ago and yesterday I tested positive for COVID-19, which explains the brain fog.
I felt a bit better tonight so I cleaned up some bugs and finished up the vid. Still clearly feeling off and my brain is still super foggy, but made some decent progress nonetheless.
May be a bit boring and painful to watch - But if you're interested in coding, MK2, and covid's effects on your brain it may be interesting.
Enjoy - and thanks!

The vid was much longer with a full arena tour showcasing all of the arena background tracks, but my stupid capture card flaked out and echoed the audio.
Now need to focus on incorporating the rest of the audio clips and tightening up gameplay so it is close to arcade accurate. Then will work on special attacks and finishers. Also battle plan (1P) mode, and Shao Kahn / Kintaro.
This has been a LOT of work. Mostly fun, but lots and lots of mindless busy work.
#3do #homebrew #mk2
#mk2 #3do #homebrew
There are still many bugs to fix (some of which you may catch in this vid), and some of the throw / body slam animations need to be tweaked, but for the most part the basic gameplay is good to go.
It's a little clunky as I'm playing both P1 and P2 on a keyboard.
Next up will be getting the post-fight sequences functioning properly, working on the 1 player battle plan loop, and fine-tuning the remaining items that need to be fine tuned.
That should officially complete whatever phase this is... Next up after that will be specials and fatalities.
#3do #homebrew #mk2
Showing Trapexit's 3it tool for 3DO cel conversion and the batch processing, some sprite positioning, and some bug fixing.
It's kind of boring, but enjoy -

Crashed a little while in due to some missing frames for Jax and Shang Tsung. Easy to fix... Getting there.
You can see how some of the fighters animation frames are not positioned, timed, or set properly for damage output.
Options menu has been added as well as Battle Screen. (Showing P1 VS P2 and the arena.)
#3do #homebrew #mk2
He arranged and performed this version for my daughter Heather who has been dealing with anxiety and depression.. Will be a surprise Christmas gift for her this year.
@JRRichardsOfficial
The number on the left is the gameplay + drawcels round trip, which must be under 16.6ms. Due to many optimizations all are now well under.
At the end showing 2 loaded fighters as well on each arena which all still animate at 60FPS. (I only have Liu Kang and Reptile's basic animations fully loaded currently.)
Next up - Loading the rest of the fighters' basic animation frames and states, and beginning in-game audio. Still on track for Q1 2024 release.
#3do #mortalkombat2 #homebrew
#3do #mk3 #homebrew #optimization
The number in the top-left corner shows the 3DO "DrawCels" time in Microseconds. The 2nd number shows the round trip time. Some arenas are good.. some need a little work. Once this process is complete I will get back to loading and positioning all the fighter CELs... Then work on actual gameplay mechanics... then finally button everything up. (Oh, and audio..)
Still on track for Q1 2024 at this point.
Special thanks to my buddy @archive3do769 for help with the upgraded graphics.
All arenas are now able to be viewed / toured in the Arena Tour mode. Next up is adding support for Y-Axis offsets and screen shake effect.
Once that is complete I will begin working on the actual fighters and gameplay animations and mechanics.
7 of 10 arenas are complete:
- Kahn's Arena
- Kombat Tomb
- Living Forest
- The Armory
- The Portal
- The Tower
- Goro's Lair
The final 3 will be done next. Audio in this video is simply a looped MK clip.
I also have plans for additional custom arenas, as well as different variations of the original arenas. Stay tuned for updates
#3do #mk2 #homebrew
The first game mode to be made available for stress testing will be the Arena Tour. As of 09-17-2023 the Living Forest is complete, The Temple is 90% complete, and the Kombat Tomb is 75% complete.
#3do #mk2 #homebrew
The game plan is to include all of the original arcade stages at their original quality (and maybe more), a single player mode, a 2 player VS mode, a casual mode with no timer or health bars, and a stage explorer mode. (And maybe even a secret fighter or two.)
Challenges include loading lots of data off cd rom, a 320x240 screen resolution VS the arcade's 400x254, and very limited console ram. (1mb VRAM, 2mb DRAM.) Some corners will need to be cut unfortunately but hopefully not too many.
Check out the 3DO discord for the latest.

During stress testing running at full speed it kept going, and going, and going... and once it hit over 700k I had to start recording.
In-game it would never be allowed to run this quickly... But I wanted to see how far and fast it could go. Game mode is "Casual", which is why P1 keeps resetting once the blocks hit the top.
I stopped recording and shut it down after 1.1mm because it's almost 1am and I have work in the morning...

This is something I wish I had known when I started uploading zoomed in upscaled 3DO videos as I would have always used Nearest Neighbor with no vertical resizing in the RetroTINK 5X, but smoother, which is default, would have been my 2nd choice anyway.
With a clean integer zoom the sharp upscaled pixels should remain sharp, which is why I started researching this in the first place.
Also - I'd be willing to bet this is the only video on YouTube that combines 3DO's Icebreaker with The Birthday Massacre. (Song is called Looking Glass)

Clearly the RGB output has higher contrast which makes me wonder if S-Video can be further dialed in. Also the zoom in gives a great demo of the difference between 480i and 240p resolutions

In the main game mode you only have one character (Cyborg) to choose from, and the moves are basically punch and kick.
Lost to the Supervisor at the end, but didn't care to try again because one playthrough was painful enough.
