1010 CFRB first broadcast in AM Stereo - July 30th, 1984 You Cant Download Vinyl 2022-08-09 | A recording of when 1010 CFRB in Toronto, Ontario, Canada officially began broadcasting in AM Stereo full-time, at 10:10 AM on July 30th, 1984. They previously had been testing the Magnavox AM Stereo system during overnight hours, using three prototype Sansui CX-990 multi-system AM Stereo car radios, but decided to go with the Motorola C-Quam system, which became the standard for AM Stereo broadcasting in 1988 in Canada and 1993 in the USA. This recording unfortunately was not made in stereo, and is actually from an .AU file (remember those?) that someone uploaded to the Internet many years ago. I no longer have a copy of that file, nor does it exist anymore online, but I luckily dubbed the majority of it to cassette (skipping over the commercials and most of the weather report). There is one MP3 copy of it online, but that's just an incomplete, lower-quality transfer of this cassette recording.CFRB mentioned that there were five different systems for AM Stereo, but actually only four were in use at the time (C-Quam, Kahn, Harris, and Magnavox); the fifth system, Belar, dropped out in 1982 when the FCC announced they were going to leave it up to the marketplace to decide which system would become the standard for AM Stereo broadcasting.
1600 WWRL in C-Quam AM Stereo (Sony SRF-A100) July 2000 You Cant Download Vinyl 2022-07-26 | The best-sounding AM Stereo radio station I've ever heard in person, New York City's 1600 WWRL. Recorded July 10th 2000 from a Sony SRF-A100 using an Optimus SCT-86 cassette recorder onto Sony high-bias tape. WWRL's audio bandwidth at the time exceeded the 10 kHz NRSC limit, providing FM-quality sound. Unfortunately WWRL discontinued broadcasting in stereo a few months after this was recorded, and switched to the Kahn Power-Side system, which claimed to improve a station's coverage by concentrating most of its signal onto one sideband. They discontinued using the Power-Side system in late 2012, after its creator, Leonard Kahn, passed away.

This was supposed to be a Near Mint record from Discogs You Cant Download Vinyl 2020-01-04 | I know vinyl records are visually graded, not play tested unless the seller indicates so, but this record's surface has a duller appearance than other RCA Victor LPs from the late '50s/early '60s, and sure enough it plays with constant loud crackle on both sides. Hopefully the grooves are just dirty and a good cleaning can save it.
