Critical listening is the first step toward an ethics and aesthetics of care and freedom. Discarding listening habits and accepting new sound qualities afford access to other layers of history and experience. Artists from South Africa and Germany share their listening experiences in new sound works. They reveal fractures in South Africa’s post-apartheid society, offer modes of transformation and healing, and question the ownership of sound in a postcolonial transhemispheric frame of reference.
The title Oscillations refers, in the first instance, to the physical space in which vibrations develop, combine, and reverberate and in which we perceive them audibly. It also opens up a metaphorical space for translations, transmissions, vibrations and transformations as variations of a sonic engagement with the world, the environment and forms of cultural dialogue.
The project is driven by the desire to eliminate economic and cultural hegemonies and arrive at a deeper understanding of diversity without invoking stereotypical images. Sounds from familiar and unfamiliar environments are deconstructed and reconstructed, unfolding a wealth of meaning to listeners. Indigenous sound practices and spirituality are combined with the latest technologies and contemporary forms of artistic expression.
During a two-year process, the project partners – the Akademie der Künste, the Centre for Humanities Research at the University of the Western Cape and Deutschlandfunk Kultur – have created a space for exchange, artist residencies, collaboration, and the creation of new sound works. Seven artists were selected on the basis of an open call in southern Africa and, together with three “catalytic artists”, they form the project’s artistic team. Residencies in Berlin and Cape Town were set up to facilitate research, sound recordings and the development of project-specific technologies for the new works. Under the guidance of a steering committee drawn from the various institutions cooperating on the project, all the different components were calibrated and tuned to one another.
In September 2023, a four-day workshop – including presentations, performances, panels and lectures – was held at the newly opened Iyatsiba Lab, an artistic and scholarly laboratory in Cape Town’s Woodstock neighbourhood that forms part of the Centre for Humanities Research at the University of the Western Cape. The workshop was led and attended by the artists and researchers involved in the Oscillations project, participants from the university milieu and international guests, who came together to reflect on sound as movement and to listen to different acoustic practices. The project grew out of this intensive process of exchange.
The newly created sound works are now assembled in dialogue in the exhibition at the Akademie der Künste. In parallel, the research has given rise to radio productions broadcast on Deutschlandfunk Kultur. On the opening weekend, the installative works will be accompanied and augmented by performances, DJ sets, artist tours and talks.
On the closing weekend (18 – 19 May) there will be an accompanying programme with curator's tours, as well as spoken contributions and performances by various Oscillations artists.
“We are grateful for the intense impact these oscillations have had on our ways of conceiving sound, art and knowledge. Together, we look forward to hearing their reverberations in the social space constituted by this exhibition.
Our special thanks go to the ten Oscillations artists: Muhammad Dawjee, Garth Erasmus, Zara Julius, Nkosenathi Koela, Christina Kubisch, Mpho Molikeng, Gabi Motuba, Neo Muyanga, Denise Onen, Kirsten Reese.”

The European Alliance of Academies was initiated by Akademie der Künste in 2020. www.adk.deHalt die Ohren steif!

Panel 1: "Contested Institutions: Making the Past Productive" Over the past few years, cultural institutions have, partly under the influence of public opinion and partly out of own desire, started to critically assess their own histories. Sometimes this concerns a location or a building, but at other times this focuses on the collection or even the name of an institution. This panel discussion will explore ways from museum practice that try to make history productive.
Charles Esche, Director Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven Wendelien van Oldenborgh, visual artist and member Akademie van Kunsten, Amsterdam Paul Spies, Director Stadtmuseum Berlin and chief curator Federal State of Berlin at the Humboldt Forum Moderation: Bruno Alves de Almeida, curator and architect
Panel 2: "Contested Monuments: How to Deal with Controversial Monuments in Public Space?" Debates on a controversial past do not only take place around cultural institutions, monuments in public space can lead to lively debate as well. Sometimes this leads to a statue being taken down, sometimes a counter monument is put into place, and sometimes this leads to entirely new interventions. The five artists on this panel will present examples of how they in their practice deal with controversial monuments in public space.

Part 2 – Wednesday, 29 June 2022 at Akademie van Kunsten KNAW Amsterdam (NL).
"The War in Ukraine and the Future of European Memory" In the first place, the war in Urkaine forms a deep tragedy for the citizens of this European nation. Not only are numerous people being killed or wounded, and buildings being demolished, memory and the future of commemoration in Europe is at stake as well. Statues and cultural objects are being wrapped up in order to protect them from devastation. Other monuments are being removed as they refer to a past that one no longer wants to see as shared. New forms of commemoration will eventually take shape. In this final lecture, the speaker will shed light on the current situation in Ukraine and its relevance for the future of European Memory.

authors from all over Europe and with workshops for students and in close cooperation with Society of Hungarian Authors.
Under the title "Battle with the Empty Sky: Language, nationalism and freedom of art in early 21st-century Europe", Academy member and writer Robert Menasse, Hungarian author László Márton and Hungarian literary critic Anna Gács examined the interaction between language, society and politics: How are language and literature affected when politics moves in a populist, nationalist or other radical direction? The British poet Daljit Nagra moderated.
In preceding workshops with the authors Luc Devoldere (Belgium), Sophie Collins (London) and László Martón (Budapest), different aspects of the topic were discussed on a European level: Which terms are reinterpreted by politics? What vocabulary do we need to describe future challenges? What possibilities are there for authors to become socio-politically active without neglecting their linguistic aesthetics?
The event was an expression of the solidarity of the European Alliance of Academies with the Society of Hungarian Authors. In December 2020, the latter had vehemently defended itself against anti-Semitic statements by Szilárd Demeter, director of Budapest's Petöfi Literary Museum. Various Alliance institutions - Royal Society of Literature, Royal Academy of Dutch Language and Literature and German Academy for Language and Literature - then joined forces to bring more public attention to the issue.
The event was funded by the Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb).

In deutscher Sprache
Livestream vom 10.8.2021, 19 Uhr
Sein bekanntestes Buch Archäologie der Medien (2002) (Deep Time of the Media, 2006) wurde in viele Sprachen übersetzt.

Beide diskutieren u. a. über assoziatives und filmisches Erinnern.

The studio as archive, the archive and one’s own voice as material – these are the themes of the sculptor Mirosław Bałka, on display not only in the sound and video installations for the exhibition “Arbeit am Gedächtnis – Transforming Archives”. Using a German schoolbook found in Bałka’s family archive as a starting point, these installations deal with the collective experience of ruptures in the history of Poland. The author and curator Julian Heynen, who has long been familiar with Bałka’s work, speaks with the artist about his memory work: The past is physis and physis is the past – and thus the present; documentation is bearing witness – and thus interlinkage and entanglement.
Mirosław Bałka lives and works in Otwock, Poland, and Oliva, Spain. He is a sculptor who is also active in the field of experimental video and drawing. He has run the Studio of Spatial Activities in the Faculty of Media Art in Warsaw since 2011. Between 1986 and 1989, he established the artistic group Consciousness Neue Bieremiennost with Mirosław Filonik and Marek Kijewski. He was awarded the Mies van der Rohe Stipend by Krefeld Kunstmuseen. He has been a member of the Akademie der Künste, Berlin, since 2010. Mirosław Bałka has participated in major exhibitions worldwide including the Venice Biennale (1990, 2003, 2005, 2013; representing Poland in 1993), documenta IX, Kassel (1992), Sydney Biennale (1992, 2006), The Carnegie International, Pittsburgh (1995), Sao Paulo Biennale (1998), Liverpool Biennial (1999) and Santa Fe Biennale (2006).
Julian Heynen is a curator and writer specialising in contemporary art. He has worked with and wrote about artists such as: Bruce Nauman, Katharina Fritsch, Franz West, Juan Muñoz, Richard Deacon, Thomas Struth, Zvi Goldstein, Miroslaw Balka, Rosemarie Trockel, Stan Douglas, Gerhard Richter, Thomas Ruff, Candida Höfer, Martin Kippenberger, Tino Sehgal, and many others. Heynen was director of exhibitions at Kunstmuseen Krefeld and until 2016 artistic director of K21 Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Düsseldorf. In 2003 and 2005 he was the commissioner of the German pavilion at the Venice Biennale, and in 2008 co-curator of the Shanghai Biennale. In 2017 he curated the Georgian pavilion at the Venice Biennale. Participated in TV program “Bilderstreit” from 2007-2011.

In deutscher Sprache Livestream vom 20.7.2021, 19 Uhr
Max Czollek lebt in Berlin. Studium Politikwissenschaften, FU Berlin sowie Promotion am Zentrum für Antisemitismusforschung, TU Berlin. Mitglied des Lyrikkollektivs G13 und Mitherausgeber des Magazins „Jalta – Positionen zur jüdischen Gegenwart“. Gemeinsam mit Sasha Marianna Salzmann Initiator von „Desintegration. Ein Kongress zeitgenössischer jüdischer Positionen“ (2016), der „Radikalen Jüdischen Kulturtage“ (2017) am Maxim Gorki Theater Berlin, Studio Я sowie „Tage der Jüdisch-Muslimischen Leitkultur“ (2020) an Theatern im ganzen deutschsprachigen Raum. Die Gedichtbände erscheinen im Verlagshaus Berlin, die Essays im Carl Hanser Verlag.
