I will walk through my thought process, some classic sound examples, and techniques used in making production ready sounds and presets for your synthesizer. This tutorial teaches how to make analog house stabs on the Moog Grandmother and some of the many variations that are possible. I have elected to use the Moog Grandmother as my analog synthesis example, due to its ease of use, and I'm using Serum and Omnisphere as my DAW or computer based example synths. This course will be agnostic towards brands and categories and will approach the knowledge of sound design in a way that lets you use whatever synth you have available to try out making your owns sounds. I want to empower you to experiment as much as your heart desires. This tutorial will be useful to film composers, EDM, trance, house, and other electronic music producers. I later add more cinematic themes and structure. I am very interested in what DJs do in terms of getting a crowd dancing, and since I grew up a ballet dancer, this is a concept that is near to my heart. This is an entirely live and unrehearsed improvised performance, and I included annotations to show some of what I'm thinking about and also to demonstrate the different musical themes weaving in and out of the texture. This is also a bit inspired by Tangerine Dream, because one can't do cinematic synthwave without some of that influence.. This is a very simple setup to make a big sound. I hope this is educational for you as well, in terms of how I put these performances together. Hopefully this camera angle also helps you learn something!

I wanted to show some performance suggestions and possibilities for how to get a Techno Trance track out of a small setup, played live.
What if you don't have enough oscillators? You can use a function generator to create synth stabs, and if you have enough channels, you can create most of the voice using only a few modules. This video will teach you how to set up a patch for live minimalist techno. I'm using a Stilton Hammer sequencer, and the effects are an Eventide H9 for delay, and a Walrus Audio Slöer for reverb.
This is a live, improvised minimalist techno jam with annotations to help you learn and hopefully find some of your own ways to experiment. I'm using the 281t as two oscillators and two envelopes Maths as an envelope,, along with the Moog DFAM for kick and bass, the Soma Quantum Ocean for hi hats, the Intellijel Dixie II+ eurorack module for modulation, and the AJH Synth Mini Mod for melody.

Drums are Linndrum samples. Tzvi's films always have an emotional element of hope and despair in equal measure. I hope this film demonstrates some ideas you can try, as far as integrating diagetic sounds as a natural part of the music. The film has no dialog, so I had to write something that would drive the emotions without clues from the characters, other than their facial expressions and actions. The director asked for synthwave, so hopefully this also captures that vibe.

This is unrehearsed and completely improvised, so results varied, but I did find a bunch of good rollicking bass lines. I hope that my approach helps you learn some different ways for how to approach the instrument, and this is only scratching the surface of what the Moog DFAM is capable of doing. I may do a series in different styles to see what happens when I just turn it on and follow the sound. Since the film is coming out today, I wanted to do a walkthrough, because my initial draft for this film was just a live performance that the director loved. I have to figure out how to unravel and mix a two track improvised performance and recreate it for a more controlled mix that could be adjusted to film edits. When you write film music, there is no right or wrong way to approach things, and this is an example of just performing live on analog synths and reacting to the visuals.
I used a Moog Grandmother, an OB-6, an ARP-2600, a Make Noise Morphagene, an Ensemble Oscillator, a Monsoon, and a CS-L oscillator to make all the sounds for the first track.
The second track features singer Ilana Goldberg. I highly recommend working with her. Her website is: http://www.ilanagoldberg.com
I hope this helps you learn something about how to approach film music from an analog synth perspective and how to organically create music based on the visuals.Moog Grandmother sound design tutorial: Lisa Bella Donna Patch book 2: Sequential DestinationsEthanJamesMusic2024-06-06 | This is a tutorial for the Moog Grandmother semi modular synthesizer, expanding on a patch created by @LisaBellaDonnaMusic where we create phasing by patching FM modulation to hard sync on the second oscillator, while having random voltage assigned to the filter frequency. We're going to cover two different films, with two different solutions for how to have solo piano against dialog, without interfering with the audience's ability to hear words. I give some ideas about orchestration, where rubato piano fits notes in between dialog. Another solution is to create a hypnotic, repetitive type of musical passage that lets us as humans psychologically ignore the notes and just process the emotion of the music with the dialog.

This is a universal setup process, where one synth has to be the master clock, and the other sync has to receive the master clock and sync its note attacks.
One caveat is that the old MIDI protocol that is used outside of a DAW is not extremely stable. I got lucky in this video, where clock drift didn't happen, but before the convenience of computers, electronic musicians used to buy expensive Master MIDI clocks to drive all synths from one location.
By the end of the video, you will have the concept of how to setup this process. The sound is a simple combination of a pulse wave with a sub oscillator to create the arpeggio.
The Sequential Circuits OB-6 can do a respectable job of coming close to the sound, because of the SEM filter that is borrowed from the original Oberheim that was used in the main theme.
Analog synthesizers have found a way back into film music, which has led to a lot of rich experimentation of what these instruments are capable of. I think my main takeaway is the heavy use of envelope, and setting the filter modulation much lower than a normal synth pluck would require. Also, having a really dry sound mixed in with lots of ambience really cuts through in a way that creates a strong effect.
I hope you learn something from this tutorial, and it gives you some ideas to try out! Please let me know if there are any questions, or if anyone knows what instrument was used on the film. I would guess a Minimoog or similar.Stranger Things Theme: OB-6 sound design tutorial: How to make the synth bassEthanJamesMusic2024-05-14 | This is a sound design tutorial for how to approach the main theme of Stanger Things. This scene is a really good example of everything being easy and clean to score, where the music can stay on the click track. The Moog DFAM doesn't have MIDI, so I had to manually play it and then edit to have it line up with the film. The OB6 is using a basic double saw bass sound, with some tricks in the mix and automation side. I'm going to show some more of my scores and hopefully this will help you learn how to look at films, set up your sessions, and score. I was requested to show how I would make the chord sound that happens in the track "Eleven". The sound is a wobbly synth sound, with some wrinkles about modulated the filter.
The Sequential Circuits OB-6 can do a respectable job of coming close to the sound. This track has polyphony, so a multi-oscillator synth with separate envelopes is required.
Analog synthesizers have found a way back into film music, which has led to a lot of rich experimentation of what these instruments are capable of. I think my main takeaway is the heavy use of filter modulation using an LFO assignment. Also, having a really dry sound mixed in with lots of ambience really cuts through in a way that creates a strong effect.

I was requested to show how I would make the lead sound that happens in the track "Eleven". The sound is a wet electric piano type of sound, with some wrinkles around the use of filter modulation and reverb..
The Sequential Circuits OB-6 can do a respectable job of coming close to the sound, and I tried to get a Grandmother version to come close. This track does require polyphony, so the Grandmother would have to be multitracked to get the same result.

I was requested to show how I would make the lead sound that happens in the track "Mesa". The sound is a wet synth brass type of sound, with some wrinkles, where the pitch is a little further apart than you normal would do for an EDM track or the type of pop 1980s track, where this type of sound was used a lot.
The Sequential Circuits OB-6 can do a respectable job of coming close to the sound. I have no idea what was actually used for the film, but it sounds closer to a CS-80, which now costs over $100,000 used. For this reason, I'm teaching how to make the sound on both OB-6 and the Moog Grandmother.
Analog synthesizers have found a way back into film music, which has led to a lot of rich experimentation of what these instruments are capable of. I think my main takeaway from making this video, is that a lot can be achieved by moving the pitch of two oscillators far apart from each other to create a lot of disturbance in the melody. Also, having a really dry sound mixed in with lots of ambience really cuts through in a way that creates a strong effect.
I hope you learn something from this tutorial, and it gives you some ideas to try out! Please let me know if there are any questions, or if anyone knows what instrument was used on the film. I'm using coins to be able to individually sustain notes on the Lyra. I have been reading a lot of Rudolf Steiner's lectures on music and trying to create complex environments that translate the spiritual realm. This particular performance focuses on using the LFO "OR" setting as a modulation source. Electronic music has so much potential in this field, because of all the possibility for human meets random interaction with voltage.
The Lyra makes creating beautiful soundscapes simple, due to its complex oscillator layout and routing options, which let you setup interactions that lead to interesting variations the more you turn up the modulation knob. I am using both H9 reverb and Sloer reverb pedals, and a Moog DFAM for some pulses. Feel free to drop me a comment if you have any questions.Esoteric Soundscapes: Live avant garde ambient performance: Soma Lyra and Enner plus Moog DFAMEthanJamesMusic2023-10-17 | Hopefully this video will teach you some ideas for how to use the @somasynths_subchannel Lyra to make ambient soundscapes alongside the Inner. I'm using coins to be able to individually sustain notes on the Lyra. I have been reading a lot of Rudolf Steiner's lectures on music and trying to create complex environments that translate the spiritual realm. This particular performance is based around the idea that in the future, humanity will identify the octave as feeling their "I" from the interval. Electronic music has so much potential in this field, because of all the possibility for human meets random interaction with voltage.

I have been reading a lot of Rudolf Steiner's lectures on music and trying to create complex environments for active meditation. Electronic music has so much potential in this field, because of all the possibility for human meets random interaction with voltage.
The patch has simple interaction points, like the Planner 2 is used for wave shaping to bring out different voices, kind of like a joystick mixer. I have also created a patch for the Moog Grandmother that utilizes sample and hold controlling both its own speed and filter frequency. For the ARP-2600, I am using sample and hold to a high resonance filter and then running an arpeggiator at a different speed to create complex rhythms.
I have included annotations to explain some of the patch, and feel free to drop me a comment if you have any questions.Moog Grandmother sound design tutorial: Lisa Bella Donna Patch book 2: FM modulation of cutoffEthanJamesMusic2023-09-26 | This is a tutorial for the Moog Grandmother semi modular synthesizer, expanding on a patch created by @LisaBellaDonnaMusic where we find some different uses for sawtooth modulation of pitch, FM, and filter cutoff. This is unrehearsed and completely improvised, so results varied, but I did find a bunch of good rollicking bass lines. I hope that my annotations help you learn some different ways for how to approach the instrument, and this is only scratching the surface of what the Moog DFAM is capable of doing. I may do a series in different styles to see what happens when I just turn it on and follow the sound. Please leave a comment with any questions you may have!Moog Grandmother sound design tutorial: Lisa Bella Donna Patch book 2: Advanced PWM RoutingEthanJamesMusic2023-09-05 | This is a tutorial for the Moog Grandmother semi modular synthesizer, expanding on a patch created by @LisaBellaDonnaMusic using different routings for PWM.
