Instead of using storyboards, all the scenes are designed directly in 3D. Every shot goes through many iterations. In most cases the look is found directly in the 3d scene instead of using concept art. This is necessery because of the long shots where the camera is moving a lot. I explore a rough version of the set with a virtual camera, often finding unxpected discoveries, almost like on a live-action film set. As you can see, it doesn’t match exactly with the final version. In this case I had to adjust the camera after the first pass of the animation to have it react more naturally to the action. Animation by Maxime Leclerc and Florian Durand.Flow Soundtrack - Behind the ScenesGints Zilbalodis2024-12-19 | A recreated demonstration of how I wrote the first demo sketch of the Flow Away cue. I don’t know how to play any instruments or read sheet music, so I write the notes on my laptop, moving them around until they sound right.
It's important for me to start writing the music very early, before the script is finished. This particular scene was inspired and guided by music. Not just in terms of the visuals, but also in ways how the story developed and the fate of the characters.
This also allows me to edit the film using original music instead of relying on temp music from other films. Had I not written this piece of music earlier, the scene might have been much shorter, getting straight to the point, but I think that giving enough time for the music to develop and grow makes it a lot more powerful.
After the animatic version of the film was finished, Rihards Zaļupe, the other composer who worked on the score, did his pass, improving the music and adding a lot more depth and nuance to its storytelling. He also conducted the orchestra recording sessions which were performed by Sinfonietta Riga musicians.
Hearing real musicians perform the themes I'd written 3 years prior was an amazing experience for me and it makes a huge difference having a real orchestra.
But we also left some of the original samples of the electronic instruments in the final version to make it sound more otherworldly. The final mix was brilliantly done by Mikko Raita.
Filma tikai kinoteātros visā Latvijā no 29. augusta.
Flow - Clip 1Gints Zilbalodis2024-05-25 | Clip from my new film Flow which premiered in Cannes Un Certain Regard 2024Away Trailer 2Gints Zilbalodis2019-06-30 | Animated feature film by Gints Zilbalodis.
