They were bowled over at the sheer magnitude of the Arctic - and also its deep fragility.
We’ve lost two thirds of all the Arctic summer ice in the last forty years. Whilst it is a shadow of its former self, it is not too late for us to help.
The oceans are our primary ally in preventing some of the truly disastrous consequences of climate change from taking hold. The impact of deep sea mining is too disastrous to mention - we urgently must protect the world’s oceans - and act now before it’s too late. #protecttheoceans

Greenpeace research found that every minute, Dove floods low-income communities with 12,000 highly polluting plastic sachets. These super-polluting packets of plastic are choking our oceans, killing wildlife, and fuelling an environmental disaster of unprecedented scale. The very communities Dove claims to support are drowning in a sea of single-use plastic, their neighbourhoods transformed into unofficial dumping grounds for corporate waste. This needs to change.
Join the movement to expose Dove’s real harm.
Watch and share this video to empower the next generation to fight against corporate greenwashing. Let’s take action against Dove’s toxic plastic pollution so that children around the world can inherit a cleaner, healthier planet and reach their full potential.

Greenpeace is on a mission to create a green and peaceful world. We’re fighting to end the age of plastic and hold corporations accountable for their environmental destruction. Together, we can make a difference.

Synopsis - The video starts with a Greenpeace campaigner saying that almost 29,000 school pupils and more than 77,000 households took part in The Big Plastic Count. We then see three pupils carrying placards outside Big Ben, with messages about stopping plastic pollution. The next scenes take place in a large room, and we hear from different pupils about why they care about reducing plastic pollution and how they found taking part in The Big Plastic Count. We hear from a teacher about how shocked she and her class were to learn that UK households collectively throw away almost 1.7 billion pieces of plastic packaging per week. The Director of Everyday Plastic talks about how great it is to have the children in Westminster grilling MPs. We see them take part in different activities to learn about how Parliament and the UN treaty making process work. We then see them make collages out of plastic, and write poems about plastic. They then go to the Houses of Parliament and talk to lots of MPs. MPs also talk about what they see as the solutions to dealing with too much plastic, and about how they like hearing from the children. The video finishes with the same Greenpeace campaigning saying that the results of The Big Plastic Count show that we need a strong Global Plastics Treaty. She thanks everyone who took part.
They claim to celebrate motherhood — while their plastic contaminates our bodies.
Dove and their owners Unilever are pumping out 1,700 highly polluting, impossible-to-recycle plastic sachets every second! 🤢
These are the findings from The Big Plastic Count this year. An incredible 224,381 citizen scientists from 77,783 households took part, including almost 29,000 school pupils.
Here’s what we found:
UK households are throwing away an estimated 1.7 billion pieces of plastic packaging every week. That’s 90 billion pieces a year.
If you counted all the plastic packaging the UK uses in one week, one second at a time, it would take you 53 years and 7 months.
The most counted category was snack packaging (699,932 pieces), closely followed by fruit and vegetable packaging (697,085 pieces).
Over half (58%) of the pieces are being incinerated - that’s up from 46% when we did the count in 2022.
Only 17% would get recycled, 14% would be exported and 11% would end up in landfill.
The UK produces more plastic waste per person than almost any other nation – second only to the US.
These findings reveal both the tidal wave of plastic packaging entering our homes each week and the government’s irresponsible way of dealing with it all.
That’s why we’re urging the government, brands, and supermarkets to support a strong, legally binding Global Plastics Treaty to cut plastic production by 75% by 2040.
Tell the government it’s time for action. Email your MP and ask them to sign a pledge for a strong Global Plastics Treaty: https://act.gp/3UzwvXl
Synopsis:
The video shows the results of The Big Plastic Count. It talks about how governments love cutting stuff, so why can't they cut plastic production?
There are lots of shots of plastic being produced, and lots of plastic waste.
It then shows a household who have been doing their bit to recycle for years, and now it's time for big brands and supermarkets to do theirs. It also illustrates the fact that some people need plastic to live independently.
This is followed by the results - just 17% recycled, 14% exported, 11% sent to landfill and 58% of the pieces we throw away are burnt.
It then focuses on the solutions - a young women emails her MP to ask the government to cut plastic production. It shows that the Global Plastics Treaty is the opportunity to cut plastic production.
Nearly 100 billion pieces of plastic packaging are thrown away by UK households every year, and just 12% is recycled in the UK.
It’s time the government got serious about tackling the plastic crisis. You can help by taking part in The Big Plastic Count!
Count your plastic for one week – 11-17 March 2024.
For one week in March, thousands of schools, households, community groups and businesses will be coming together to count their plastic waste. And we want you to join them.
Almost a quarter of a million people took part in The Big Plastic Count in 2022. Together we revealed that almost two billion pieces of plastic packaging are being thrown away a week. This year you can help build even more evidence to convince UK ministers to lead the way at the global talks that could finally phase out plastic pollution for good.

Will you help take Indigenous leader Txai Suruí and Brazilian artivist Mundano take their message from the heart of the Amazon rainforest to the heart of Tesco’s board room?
Txai Suruí teams up with Mundano to draw attention to the devastation caused by Tesco and JBS - one of its Brazilian-owned suppliers that has been linked to an estimated 1.5 million hectares of deforestation.
The 150 metre long artwork - which includes Tesco’s iconic dotted line around the edge of the deforested area - questions the integrity of Tesco’s pledge to be deforestation-free while still maintaining business ties with the world’s largest and most notorious meat packing company, JBS.
Tesco is the biggest seller of industrially produced meat and dairy in the UK. Despite promising over a decade ago to end its links to deforestation, its supply chain is still riddled with soya and it still buys from suppliers owned by Brazilian meat giant JBS.
This company is notorious for driving forest destruction in the Amazon, even within Indigenous Territories, as well as other climate critical ecosystems in South America. It’s linked to corruption and human rights abuses and massive GHG emissions.
Please watch and share this video showing Txai and Mundano’s artwork’s installation calling on Tesco to drop JBS and create a movement that is impossible to ignore.

Deep sea mining is the practice of mining metals and minerals from the seabed. It’s an extremely destructive form of mining that would damage the oceans beyond repair, threatening their ability to help fight climate change.
Thousands of metres below the surface, deposits of metals and minerals like manganese, nickel and cobalt have built up on the seafloor into potato-sized nodules over millions of years. To mine these metals, gigantic machines weighing more than a blue whale would scoop deposits from the deep ocean floor. They’d then pump the mined material up to a ship through up to several kilometres of tubing. Sand, seawater and other mineral waste would then be pumped back into the water.
Deep sea mining is a very new industry. Apart from a few small tests, no actual mining has happened yet. But the companies involved are preparing to start full-scale production.
The International Seabed Authority is meant to be the regulator that protects the global oceans from the harmful impacts of deep sea mining. This week international negotiations are taking place to decide whether or not to allow the mining to go ahead.
This is a once in a generation opportunity to stop profit-seeking companies from destroying the oceans and a crucial defence against climate change.

Plastics are damaging our health and environment at every stage of their lifecycle, and contributing to the climate crisis.
Despite this, big oil, in league with brands like Coca-Cola, Nestlé, PepsiCo, and Unilever, continue to push massive amounts of single-use plastic into the world.
We need a strong Global Plastics Treaty to tidy up the mess and END THE AGE OF PLASTIC.
