Adventures in AwarenessCelebrating Bernardo's upcoming book 'Idealism in a nutshell' we're releasing these two lectures, originally filmed 22nd June 2020 as part of a four week course.
Our next discussion series with Bernardo starts 29th Oct and features as guest the celebrated neuroscientist Christof Koch: https://dandelion.events/e/y54ag
Bernardo Kastrup's work has been leading the modern renaissance of the philosophical position, ‘metaphysical idealism’ that reality is essentially mental, an appearance in ‘mind.’ Bernardo has a Ph.D. in philosophy (ontology, philosophy of mind) and another Ph.D. in computer engineering (reconfigurable computing, artificial intelligence). As a scientist, Bernardo has worked for the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and the Philips Research Laboratories (where the 'Casimir Effect' of Quantum Field Theory was discovered). Formulated in detail in many academic papers and books, his ideas have been featured on Scientific American, the Institute of Art and Ideas, the Blog of the American Philosophical Association and Big Think, among others. Bernardo's most recent book is The Idea of the World: A multi-disciplinary argument for the mental nature of reality. 0:00 Introduction 3:30 reasons why objective reality outside consciousness seem intuitive: 1. Neural correlates of experience, 2 seemingly consistent objective reality 3. The world doesn't respond to our wishes 7:50 how to overcome these prejudices 10:30 what is undeniably observable as a starting point 13:20 what is the most parsimonious explanation 17:00 Intrinsic vrs extrinsic experience 20:00 Brain function is the extrinsic experience of intrinsic experience 24:28 Intrinsic experiences are reflected back to us as extrinsic experiences 27:30 Information is just a description of richness of states, and does not exist in and of itself 30:30 In idealism phenomenology & ontology are closely related 31:20 All matter is the extrinsic experience of inner life, and mass, charge, spin are merely descriptions of this extrinsic experience. 36:40 Consciousness is not at rest in deep sleep 41:00 Does a TV, a sun or blackhole have inner life? 47:30 The subconscious is mislabeled concept - its only the lack of explicit meta-cognition. 48:00 This is a high match with Near Death Experiences 49:20 Blindsight is a break in meta-cognition (back and forth between experience and self-reporting of the experience. 51:20 The matter of the brain implies that all matter is extrinsic appearance of universal inner life. 53:30 There are no separate objects in the universe - all separation is arbitrary, nominal. 58:00 The universe as a whole is an appearance of an inner experience 60:00 Why does the universe configure itself this way? Why is there suffering? 1:06:00 might universal consciousness dream? It doesn't have different perspectives, only a wholistic view 1:11:20 AI is not conscious 1:12:20 the universe has no plan 1:14:00 metacognition is the recognition of your own experience 1:15:20 are all living being (plants etc) conscious? 1:16:00 how do the two preservatives (intrinsic and extrinsic) emerge? Dissociation 1:23:00 compartmentalisation is a form of dissociation and shows how we impinge on each others experience, which we call perception 1:30:00 the body is the appearance of dissociation, the world an appearance of mind at large ( universal consciousness not part of alters) 1:36:11 Gods, aliens, angels and split personalities... can there be dissociations within dissociations?Buddhism vs Nonduality: Yahel Avigur on the emptiness of awarenessAdventures in Awareness2024-09-08 | The following is a conversation with Yahel Avigur, a highly regarded meditation teacher in the Buddhist Insight meditation tradition. He regularly leads retreats at Gaia House in the UK, and was approved to Rob Burbea to teach his approach to emptiness, dependent arising and Jhanas, the special states of deep absorption that can arise in mediation. He is highly sought after to guide long personal silent retreats for people doing 3 month, 6 month and year long immersions.
The conversation is basically motivated by my desire to understand the differences between Advaita Vedanta and Buddhist perspectives on reality and awakening. Specifically, how fundamental is awareness?
Advaita Vendanta is otherwise known as non-duality or metaphysical idealism, which is the notion that all of reality is consciousness, and there are many other videos on the channel with Bernado Kastrup, Rupert Spira, Christopher Wallis and such that expound on this view.

He now teaches insight meditation inspired by the late Rob Burbea, with a focus on understanding the emptiness of all things and the ways in which changing our ways of looking can reduce suffering and enhance the beauty of life. He offers teachings freely, living frugally in a caravan in the UK, from donations from those who appreciate what he offers.

Patrick's route to the Western Esoteric Tradition Daimons, Shamans and the link between worlds His views on anomalous phenomena (UFOs, fairies etc) Enlightenment and the Western Tradition
Patrick Harpur attended St Catharine's College, Cambridge, to read English, and his writings have appeared in The Guardian, Fortean Times, Gnosis, Resurgence, the New Statesman and the Independent on Sunday. He is often invited to give talks in the UK, in Spain and in America; and he has taught post-graduate students at Schumacher College (Dartington).
As well as several novels, Patrick is the author of 4 non-fiction books including Daimonic Reality: A Field Guide to the Otherworld which attempted to make sense of visions and apparitions by recourse to Platonic philosophy, Jungian psychology, and the Romantic notion of imagination. He also wrote The Philosophers' Secret Fire: A History of the Imagination outlined an esoteric Western way of seeing the world which has been largely neglected. In 2010, Rider published the rather ambitiously titled A Complete Guide to the Soul, which appeared a year later in the US as The Secret Tradition of the Soul (Evolver Editions, an imprint of North Atlantic Books). The Stormy Petrel (The Squeeze Press, 2017) is a novel based on the life and work of the Danish thinker Søren Kierkegaard, whose writings have gripped Patrick for years.
Federico Faggin is an Italian-American physicist, engineer, inventor and entrepreneur. He is best known for designing the first commercial microprocessor, the Intel 4004. In 2010, he received the 2009 National Medal of Technology and Innovation, the highest honor the United States confers for achievements related to technological progress.
In 2011, Faggin founded the Federico and Elvia Faggin Foundation to support the scientific study of consciousness at US universities and research institutes.
Bernardo considers him ‘probably the most well-rounded Idealist alive today.’
Federico's journey to his model of reality How science must completely change to incorporate consciousness How quantum states make sense when viewed as descriptions of experience How consciousness and life are nothing like computers How meditation, spirituality and science relate

0:00 Introduction 1:40 What Bernardo appreciates in Michaels work 2:50 What Michael appreciates in Bernardo’s work. 3:55 How to tell what is conscious 10:00 Every cell does what neurons do: if brains produce consciousness maybe all cells do 12:00 A framework for types of mind 14:40 The continuum of agency: based on prediction and efficacious interaction 19:27 Bernardo’s: the boundaries of self 24:09 Bernardo: conscious computers are unlikely: things only exist conceptually 29:00 Michael: Goal seeking the best measure of consciousness: since there is no obvious place mechanical chemistry becomes cognitive life, and all life is a collection of nested selves 36:26 Bernardo: Individuality is epiphenomenal and can explain laboratory division of life . LIFE VS IMITATIONS
39:54 Bernardo: Distinguish between what is natural and what is an imitation (a mannequin) A Mannequin looks like a human because it is designed to look like one, but we can’t draw more correlations based on that. AI might seek certain goals because it was designed to by its creators, but equally we can’t draw further conclusions based on that. 42:13 Michael: gears and cogs could make life 46:00 Michael: Metabolism is a version of autopoiesis; self construction and the need to battle for energy 48:00 Agency must be determined by perturbative experiments, not casual observation. 50:58 Life identified by goal seeking behaviour 55:26 Bernardo praises the paradigm shift Michael introduces in recognising agents in nature Michael recognises the alternative health community as having this paradigm without the mechanism. Bioelectrical networks the glue collections of cells. 1:00 Hypnosis/therapy may be mechanisms to intervene at higher order levels. 1:07:00 Recap of criteria for consciousness 1:13:00 Moral/Ethical implications of Michael’s work 1:19:00 Recognising higher order agents in human society Michael is not sure if bioelectricity can be extrapolated to human society

If everything we think of as physical is a representation of subjective inner states, how might we think of cancer and what does that mean practically?
Following her own sudden non-dual experience one morning in February 2016, Jessica Corneille decided to change the course of her life by quitting her career in the arts/cultural heritage preservation (and as an aspiring art curator), to play her part, instead, in helping to de-stigmatise, de-pathologise and raise awareness around spiritual awakening, enlightenment, and non-dual experiences within mainstream psychology.
She graduated with Distinction from a Masters Degree in Psychology from the University of Greenwich, where she focused her studies on the psychology of exceptional human experiences (transpersonal, anomalistic and parapsychology), under the guidance of Dr David Luke. She is now a fully-qualified research psychologist specialising predominantly in spiritual awakenings of a spontaneous nature, as well as other non-ordinary states of consciousness. Jessica has presented her work at a number of academic conferences, including with the British Psychological Society. She also works for the Scientific and Medical Network, is a member of the Galileo Commission steering committee, a collaborator of the Emergent Phenomenology Research Consortium and Spiritual Crisis Network, a certified Kundalini Yoga teacher running regular classes in London, and has recently started running sharing circles with the Psychedelic Society and Spiritual Awakenings International.
Her greatest missions in life are to challenge the default pathologisation of awakening experiences by helping to inform and encourage mainstream psychology to look beyond the current designated spectrum of ‘normality’, to encompass the transpersonal as something that is intrinsic to the human experience, and in helping individuals come to the realisation of their highest human potential.

Bernardo Kastrup & Rupert SpiraAdventures in Awareness2022-10-16 | Bernardo Kastrup & Rupert Spira discuss whether universal consciousness does or can learn anything from the experiences we have in this life? For example, an awareness of its capabilities, or the knowing of what it would feel like not to be itself.

Bernardo Kastrup & Rupert SpiraAdventures in Awareness2022-10-12 | Bernardo Kastrup and Rupert Spira discuss their belief that reality, or infinite consciousness does not have a plan, but there doesn’t need to be a premeditated plan for there to be a spontaneous and intelligent response to circumstances in the direction of a goal.
