New phone-hacking threat discovered by University of Florida researchers University of Florida 2023-05-30 | A new phone-hacking threat has been discovered by researchers at the University of Florida, and those in the field of cybersecurity have taken notice. This ""invisible finger"" technology allows cybercriminals to hack into nearby touchscreen devices without touching them.“Our research is designed to help the industry identify vulnerabilities, so they can improve the security of their products for the customers and reduce the potential for phone-hacking,” said Shuo Wang, the UF electrical and computer engineering professor who led the team. “In other words, we’re looking for the weaknesses.”While the threat isn’t realized just yet, Wang’s goal is to stay ahead of any would-be hackers and help manufacturers prevent the problem before it starts. New research has found that many products on Amazon have used deceptive marketing practices to raise prices while pretending to offer a discount. More than a quarter of vacuum cleaners sold on Amazon have at some point pretended to offer a discount when they had actually just increased the price. Other sellers have used this deceptive pricing practice anywhere from 3% of the time for books to more than 13% of the time for blenders, digital cameras and drones. Under his leadership, UF rose to a top-five public university ranking, launched an AI initiative, hit record research and fundraising milestones and embarked on the most ambitious projects yet.Throughout it all, his presidency has been as fun as it has been far-reaching.
