The Princess and the ScrivenerBefore social isolation, there were movie theaters. Back at the beginning of March, Mikaela and I were lucky enough to see the new Emma (2020) directed by Autumn de Wilde before Florida’s safer-at-home measure was enacted. We enjoyed it and it prompted us to watch every film (and the BBC's 2009 miniseries) adaptation in the last 25 years because I love Jane Austen and that’s a totally normal reaction for me and my girlfriend is indulgent.
We watched: Clueless (1995), Emma (1996), Emma (also 1996), BBC's Emma (2009), and Emma (2020).

At the time of filming, Our Flag Means Death Season 2 had not yet been confirmed so we were going off what we had from season 1. Sorry about the audio, as well!
Have you seen Our Flag Means Death? What do you think about it?!

Still, at least the show featured Bicon Adelaide Kane. And is anyone else a fan of Torrance Coomb's random period-piece appearances? I'm not the biggest fan of Bash but it's always fun to see Coombs just show up unannounced with his fake British accent (he's Canadian, but pretty good at the accent imo).

A German scientist takes a chance on him in 1943, turning him into the "perfect soldier," but Steve is much more of a "good man" if ya know what I mean.
Also doing research on this movie made me realize how cool Joe Johnston is. Let's talk about it.

Scott Pilgrim is a kinda bland and definitely selfish guy who falls for a girl who's way out of his league, only to find out that he now has to fight her seven evil exes, one of which is, of course, Chris Evans as Lucas Lee, a "kind of good skateboarder" who now makes "kind of good movies."
And yes, he's exactly why we watched this movie, despite what Et says.

It wasn't so long ago that I was still battling internalized and systemic fatphobia, but Dumplin' (by Julie Murphy) changed a lot of that for me. So it's no surprise that, no matter how many times I watch the movie of the same name, I get emotional.
This is probably the most sentimental I've ever gotten in a video that wasn't about someone passing away (i.e. our videos about Carrie Fisher).
Also, just a note but Hannah is played by Bex Taylor-Klaus, who is nonbinary themselves, but if I remember correctly, Hannah is not. If I'm wrong, absolutely tell me so! (Hannah is definitely not nonbinary in the book, which is probably why I felt so comfortable using she/her pronouns, but I don't mind adjusting captions and adding a pinned comment if it's necessary.)

I originally uploaded this video late last night. When I recorded this video, I was operating under the incorrect assumption that Talia Hibbert was a straight woman and referenced this a few times throughout. I learned this morning that she actually identifies as pansexual! It was important to me that I remove these references while keeping the video as intact as possible. Thank you for your patience and I hope you enjoy!
I was sent this book for free (first time for everything!) for review purposes. We all know how I felt about the first book in the Brown Sisters series (Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert), and now it's time for Take a Hint, Dani Brown.
Synopsis: Dani’s plan is simple: fake a relationship in public, seduce Zaf behind the scenes. The trouble is, grumpy Zaf is secretly a hopeless romantic—and he’s determined to corrupt Dani’s stone-cold realism. Before long, he’s tackling her fears into the dirt. But the former sports star has issues of his own, and the walls around his heart are as thick as his...um, thighs.

Were Talking about Cats (1998 & 2019) | Cats Fan Reviews Cats (2019)The Princess and the Scrivener2020-05-08 | Birds do it. Bees do it. Even educated fleas do it. Let's do it, let's talk about both film versions of the hit Andrew Lloyd Weber musical Cats. The first being the 1998 recording of the stage production, with Ken Page as Old Deuteronomy, and the second being the 2019 film adaptation directed by Tom Hooper.
Push (2009, dir. Paul McGuigan) is about a world in which some people have powers (okay, yeah, /kinda/ like the X-Men). A government agency (not sure which government, given the locale versus the cast) called the Division is looking to expand upon work the Nazis started (you read that right) and is known for stalking, capturing, and experimenting on these powerful people. Nick (our hero, of course played by Chris) is recruited by 13-year-old Watcher, Cassie (Dakota Fanning), for a journey to find $6 million and her captured mother.
Lots of stuff happens, but it's still not an X-Men ripoff.

Times are tough and confusing and scary right now, but we're all finding ways to keep ourselves busy and occupied. Here are some of the things I've been watching and doing that have made me happy or less lonely over the last few weeks while I've been self-isolating.
Just kidding. The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond is a…not very wild ride through the Straights of the 20's. Written by Famously Gay Tennessee Williams, this movie is a hot mess from start to finish. Thankfully, Bryce Dallas Howard and Chris Evans are both lovely to look at pretty much always.
Also peek Ellen Burstyn as Miss Attie, who was also featured in The Wicker Man (2006), which we watched once upon a time…

My girlfriend Mikaela and my friend @AndreaLausell–despite being big theater nerds–have never seen the stage version of Phantom of the Opera! We talked about the production and disfigurement in the story.
Street Kings (2008, dir. by David Ayer) is about a sad cop (Keanu Reeves) who murders criminals with no regard for what the justice system is meant to do, then maybe almost gets framed for (or actually almost helps in) the death of another cop - his former partner (Terry Crews) - and falls down a deep, dark green rabbit hole when his own people start turning on him for…reasons, we guess.
We saved you the time and energy by (mostly, Paige got really distracted) watching Street Kings for you. You're welcome.

#Onward (2020) is Pixar’s newest film, set in a suburban fantasy world in which two elf brothers must go on a quest to reunite with their dead father before time runs out. Directed by Dan Scanlon (and inspired by Scanlon’s life) and produced by Kori Rae, this film features Disney’s/Pixar’s first canonically queer animated character in Lena Waithe’s character, Specter. Yep. We gotta talk about that too.
Disfiguremisia was a term coined by Mikaela Moody to describe the erasure of, and prejudice against, disfigured (or visibly different) people.
In order: - Eight Kinky Nights: An f/f Chanukah romance, by Xan West - Gods of Jade and Shadow, by Silvia Moreno-Garcia - The Lady from the Black Lagoon: Hollywood Monsters and the Lost Legacy of Millicent Patrick by Mallory O’Meara - The Right Swipe, by Alisha Rai - Honorary Mention: I Hope We Choose Love: A Trans Girl’s Notes from the End of the World by Kai Cheng Thom - Get A Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert
The title says it all. Mikaela and I have never read Little Women, seen any of the adaptations, and know practically nothing about it. So how does the new version, directed and written by Greta Gerwig, hold up to our newbie gaze?

* P&S * facebook.com/PrincessScrivener, twitter.com/PrncessScrivnr, princessscrivener.tumblr.comChris Evans Worst Movie | London (2005) Review | ChristravaganzaThe Princess and the Scrivener2019-08-02 | Heads up: There's a pretty blatant discussion of drug use and mental illness/disability in this video. Our word choice is not ideal, and we acknowledge that, but we also want to make this clear: This movie never once considers Syd, it's main character, to be disabled or an addict. The film never views abuse of any kind as anything beyond a personality trait, and that is not acceptable.
We saw this movie itself as a source of stigma, and we should have been clearer in constructing that message. We also know that we could and should have been more sensitive when choosing our words on certain topics.
That being said:
If you want a master class in what NOT to do while making a film, watch London (2005)!
Angel and I can't even say the WORD "London" anymore. This terrible movie broke us.
“For as long as the Supers have existed, Meg Sawyer has had one goal: to not become a casualty in their near-daily battles for justice. And for the last seventeen years, she's managed to do just that. Sure, her minimum-wage job at the local coffee shop isn't great, she can't even leave her apartment without loading herself up with protective gear, and her car was just hijacked to throw at a supervillain (again), but she's not dead yet.
But when Meg accidentally finds one of the city's perfect, invincible protectors murdered under extremely suspicious circumstances, her whole "innocent bystander" strategy falls apart. After being coerced by his determined girlfriend into a mission to help prevent the deaths of the remaining Supers, Meg finds herself forced into the foreground of a story she never wanted to be part of–one that challenges everything she thought she knew about both her city and herself.”
Cellular (dir. David R. Ellis) isn't, however, but it's...actually enjoyable! You know, if you just get past the first little bit of typical early-aughts misogyny.
