WDKX 103.9 Interview with Wes Brown - Flower City Pottery Invitational 2022 Visiting Artist Flower City Arts Center 2022-11-18 | Ceramic Artist We Brown sat down for an interview with WDKX 103.9 Rochester while in the city for the 2022 Flower City Pottery Invitational. "Through clay I explore the concepts of human identity formed as a result of experience and time," Brown says in his artist statement for the show. "I seek through the construction of my work to make from many storied surfaces a single composition. I act upon clay with physicality to impress upon its malleable surface a history. Every part is then cut into pieces as improvisation and intuition come to the forefront for the constructing of a new whole. There is a uniqueness as each piece is a conglomeration of the interweaved parts and histories. The final piece with its many sides, textures, and parts is then cloaked in the color black. The final presentation to the viewer is a dark silhouette, leaving the many details to only be discovered through intimate examination." Wes Brown is an artist currently living and working in East Stroudsburg, PA. Brown holds a BFA from Bowling Green State University and an MFA from Indiana University-Bloomington. His work is a combination of both wheel and hand building. Brown’s most recent works are a meeting of sculpture and utilitarian pottery. Through a combination of hand building and wheel throwing Brown creates new forms to fit old functions. Brown’s work speaks to exploration, perseverance, and usefulness. It is not meant to extol the prowess of any specific photographer. Its purpose is to illustrate a story using the unique power of photography. For that it includes several photographs taken by professional photographers in Europe about a hundred years ago. The pictures and the story all involve my Grandmother, Bertha (“Bubu”) Grossman, who had an immigrant story to tell. A story about survival. The fact that this story exists to be shared is a tribute to the extraordinary value of photography. It is both an art form, and one that can depict truth and circumstances as nothing else can. It documents events so that they remain rooted as irrefutable evidence of their occurrence for future generations. "Bubu" had emigrated to the United States years before from Eastern Europe. She had been living in The Bronx in New York City. Then, she decided to return to Europe in 1912 with her four children while pregnant with a fifth, with the purpose of introducing her family to her parents in Europe. Leaving her husband, Israel Grossman, behind on the lower East Side. Many people had emigrated from Eastern Europe to the United States. Very few returned to visit. What Bubu didn't know was that she'd encounter World War I and not be able to return for several more years. Bubu’s story is, at its core, the story of an indomitable spirit. She overcame unimaginable hazards, discomforts, and challenges to find food and shelter for herself and her family. The overwhelming circumstances she faced could understandably have caused an ordinary person to give up. And, yet she managed to return to the United States with her five children substantially intact. Telling "Bubu's Journey" memorializes her life. Her story is an inspiration - and also perhaps serves to encourage us all to consider the often unknown reality of any immigrant’s journey. Lastly, this exhibit serves as an example of the treasure that is visual storytelling. My departed wife Natalie and daughter Laura and I have worked together on variations of this project since 2010. Emotional Containers: Creating Vessels to Hold Emotional Expressions Flower City Arts Center 2021-04-12 | We're so excited to present this new class in ceramics with Teaching Artist Gina Sacino. We hope you'll find it worthwhile and fulfilling to create your own Emotional Container and taking a moment to reflect on yourself here in our community ceramics studio in Rochester, NY.This workshop explores how we contain our emotions as individuals. Participants will utilize small vessel making as a means of creating containers for each of the basic human emotions. There is a discussion component in this workshop, but no one needs to share anything they are uncomfortable sharing. This workshop aims to help people identify emotions, and utilize art making as a way to express and create through these emotions.In this exploration you will be both hand-building and working on the wheel. Glazing and surface treatment will be discussed. No experience necessary. 20 Minute Large Ceramic Pot Full Demo Flower City Arts Center 2021-03-22 | Flower City Arts Center Ceramics Studio Manager Kyle Lascelle demos, in full, the creation of a 2-3 foot ceramic onggi pot. Kyle uses a mixture of his own style and traditional styles of creating the pot from the ground up by combining coiling and throwing techniques. This entire process took about 3 hours for Kyle to complete, but it has been sped up here for ease of viewing. The pot was glazed and fired in our large kiln.
