Beware lest there be among you a man or woman or clan or tribe whose heart is turning away today from the LORD our God to go and serve the gods of those nations. Beware lest there be among you a root bearing poisonous and bitter fruit, one who, when he hears the words of this sworn covenant, blesses himself in his heart, saying, “I shall be safe, though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart.” (D’varim/Deuteronomy 29:17-18; English: 29:18-19)

For my wife, Robin, in honour of her 40th birthday, June 4, 1999
Recorded: May 5, 2021
I had a dream
That there was more to this life
It seemed to me
That there was hope beyond these clouds of mine
In my desperation I couldn't see
The goodness God prepared for me
I could only wish that I would one day know
The riches I would find
I had a dream
I had a dream
That I'd know the meaning of
Reality
That his love would touch this heart of mine
I wasn't sure if dreams really did come true
Until the day I married you
Then I knew that these dreams I had
Were promises from God's own hand
I had a dream
You are my dream
You are my vision in the sky
Revealing to me
You are God's love personified
Making visible the things I cannot see
With my natural eyes
Putting flesh upon the words that others think
Are made up in my mind
You are my dream
Yes, you are my dream

Eulogies offered by Daniel, Rivka, and Benjamin Nessim, followed by the reading of several letters of remembrance.
---
On 14 December 1934, Elias Jacob Nessim was born to Jacob Sassoon and Victoria (née Forte) Nessim in Kobe, Japan. It was there that his parents were working in partnership with Elie’s uncle, Moshe. His father Jacob was from Baghdad and his mother Victoria from Cairo. Like many Baghdadi families, they were conducting business on Asia’s eastern seaports. It wasn’t long however before rumours and then news of war in Europe reached their ears. By 1936, Japan allied itself with Germany and the young family felt compelled to flee.
It was thus that Elie, his older brother Albert, and younger sister Joyce relocated to their mother’s home city of Cairo. Even there, they were not safe as the German menace began to approach, and so they fled again—this time to Bombay, where many Iraqi Jews were finding safe haven. It was at the synagogue there —Knesset Eliyahu —that Elie one day approached the parochet (the curtain that covers the Torah ark [Aron Kodesh] containing the Torah scrolls in a synagogue) with the desire to know God, laying his hand on it and praying.
It wouldn't be too long before the war ended, Elie finished his schooling in Switzerland, and then entered England as a student.
As a student in Exeter, Elie roomed with a Christian family who shared their love of Jesus with him. Upon finding him skeptical, they asked him to read the book of Isaiah. It was through the prophecies there that he became convinced that Jesus is the Messiah of Israel. Soon, he was rooming at the house of one Derek Prince in London. Upon announcing his engagement to Kirsten, one of Derek’s adopted Arab daughters, he noticed Judith in the audience. Kirsten shortly after ended the engagement and after some time Elie began to court Judith, a nurse who had survived the Shoah. They were married 17 August 1959.
In their early days Elie worked for Ford Motors and then Metal Box Company as a chemist. His real love was serving the Lord however, and he began to volunteer with the International Society for the Evangelisation of the Jews (IJS) at the Gilead Medical Mission in Shoreditch. When that mission was closed, IJS offered him and the family a post either in Vancouver or North London. Clearly hearing the Lord send him to Canada, he and Judith brought the family to Vancouver where he served as the mission’s Canadian Director.
After some years, there being a growing Hebrew Christian community in Vancouver, Elie and Judith left the IJS (now CWI, Christian Witness to Israel) and began to live by faith, with no paycheque. At the same time, they took part in the founding of Zion Messianic Fellowship, and later Kehilat Tsion. Elie pastored Kehilat Tsion faithfully until he was physically unable to do so but is greatly loved by the congregation and left an indelible legacy in many lives. He passed peacefully into the Lord’s presence on 17 November 2023 with his children at his side.
Presented at All Saints Lutheran Church, Ottawa, Ontario on November 19, 2023.
