I often get questions like, “What should I do next? I’ve already learned hiragana and katakana and basic sentence structure” or “how can I learn pitch accents of words? How about pitch accent changes in verb and i-adjective conjugations?”
To answer these questions, today, I’d like to introduce a learning method called immersion. In the video “Create Your Japanese Brain”(youtu.be/PBAYCbL3lEc), I talked about the importance of creating your Japanese brain, using zooming in and out concept, many people said it was a game changer or an eye-opener. I highly recommend you watch this. And immersion is how you can create your Japanese brain. How you can train your Japanese brain.
I know that most of my audience is beginners, so this video is meant for beginners, but if you never tried or have struggled to apply it to your learning, then this video is worth watching because I’ll talk about what immersion is, what outcomes you can expect, and when and how you can apply it to your daily life. So actually, this video is for beginners of immersion.
Living in a country where your target language is spoken doesn’t necessarily mean you’re doing “immersion.” If there’s not many chances to talk to or listen to native speakers, you’re not immersing yourself. If your work is done in your native language and if you don’t have to use your target language at work, it’s not immersion even if you’re living in the country.
Whether you can immerse yourself or not doesn’t depend on where you live. You can do it wherever you are, which means, you can start it from today!

みなさん、こんにちは。 It's often said that pitch accent changes the meaning of words like "ame" and “ame” (rain/candy) and "hashi" and “hashi” (chopsticks/bridge). That is true, but it’s just one function of pitch accent. There's more to it than that.
By learning more about this, you can gain a detailed understanding of pitch accent, and then make an informed decision about whether it’s worth it for you to study. If you do decide you would like to learn it, the learning methods I will mention aren't difficult.
This video is not about the rules and patterns of pitch accent. There are two basic rules and four accent patterns in pitch accent. If you want to study these fundamentals, please watch this video: The Very Basics of Japanese Pitch Accent | 2 Rules and 4 Patterns youtu.be/c9OArpr2A78

Have you struggled with creating Japanese sentences? I understand the struggle you feel when you try to make Japanese sentences because I felt the same thing when I started learning English. The word order is completely different, and I didn’t know how to make English sentences.
So today, as a learner myself and a Japanese teacher who organizes a Japanese learning website that now has over a thousand learners, I’d like to teach you the very basic fundamentals about how to structure Japanese sentences.
In other words, I will talk about how to create a 'Japanese brain, にほんごのう.' のう means “brain.” Among Japanese people studying English, it's often said that creating an 'English brain, えいごのう' is important for speaking English. This means thinking in English from the start, rather than translating from Japanese to English. Since Japanese and English have very different word orders, beginners especially tend to think in Japanese first and then try to translate it into English. I believe beginners of Japanese do the same thing, thinking in English first and then try to translate it into Japanese. And if you are one of them, this video is for you.
I made this video for those who are struggling with this. To break free from translating, today let's learn how to create a 'Japanese brain, にほんごのう.'

A subscriber wants to know the difference between these two sentences:
1. 田中さんは、京都に行きたいと言っていました 2. 田中さんは、京都に行きたいと言いました
Can you tell the difference in meaning? If not, I’ll explain it to you.
The difference lies in the ending: と言っていました and と言いました.
言いました is simply a statement, while 言っていました indicates that there’s a listener and the speaker is conveying this information to them. So, 田中さんは京都に行きたいと言っていました means that the speaker is reporting to the listener that Tanaka-san said they wanted to go to Kyoto. The English translation would be the same: "Tanaka-san said they wanted to go to Kyoto." But there’s a difference.Vowel Devoicing: Key to Sounding NaturalSpeak Japanese Naturally2024-06-30 | Join my subscription course!😊 speakjapanesenaturally.com You'll learn about Japanese phonetics, such as pronunciation, rhythm, pitch accent, intonation and so on. A subscriber commented that his こうきょ, meaning "Imperial Palace," was mistaken for とうきょう. I’m gonna guess what happened and tell you how you can prevent it.
I think he said こうきょ as こうきょう based on the romaji spelling "Koukyo," with the accent of "Tokyo" in English. the "o" as [ou]. You might think きょ and きょう sound the same, but they don’t. They sound very different to Japanese people. Romaji can be confusing. It’s best to learn hiragana and katakana for clear pronunciation.
Another thing is the pronunciation of きょ. This is きょ, not きよ. So こうきょ and こうきよ sound very different as well.
Specifically, きょ is one mora, きよ is two mora and きょう is two mora. One mora and two mora sound very different.
It’s best to learn about Japanese mora as well.Japanese Listening Practice | Mastering Mora, Japanese rhythmSpeak Japanese Naturally2024-06-23 | There's an error.
In the second line of the second-to-last verse, the number of mora is 8, not 7. So the correct count is: 5 つくろうヨ 8 ほたるのすみよい 5 あいかわを Unlike the second-to-last verse, this one's second line cannot be fixed.
All hiragana, including small つ, ん, きゃ and long vowel have one mora each, the same length. When you acquire the concept of mora, your Japanese will sound more natural. You'll learn more about mora in my subscription course: speakjapanesenaturally.com

Saying katakana words with a Katakana pronunciation makes you sound very natural but, I often hear that it’s difficult to pronounce katakana words correctly.
Here are three tips I’d like you to try: First: Think of them in Katakana, not in the English spelling. If you think of the word using the alphabet, the sound won’t be like Japanese. So think of them in katakana first. Second: Say vowels clearly. All Japanese vowels are pronounced clearly. There are no schwas, which are the unstressed and unclear vowel sounds in some English words. Third: Learn its pitch accent. If you stress a different part, sometimes it’s hard to be understood.Japanese Listening Practice | How to use GozaimasuSpeak Japanese Naturally2024-06-14 | Practice your Japanese listening skills with this conversation video at a car dealer.
