Got a piece of vintage electronic gear that needs a 5.4v mercury battery? They've been banned, so you can't buy them anymore, but today we're going to make a special-purpose voltage regulator so you can use modern lithium batteries instead.
You can get one of these regulator boards here:

I found a cartridge-style Federal Electronic Gage Head on eBay to use with my Gage Amplifier. It's here today, so let's see if we can get it working. We'll need to make a brass clamp and thumbscrew to hold it and (un)make some modifications to the gage amp.
Here's the gage head I purchased. The seller has a few more:

Belt Grinder Playlist: youtube.com/playlist?list=PLDlWKv7KIIr-TBckRoTABh_D5e-7buimY
Today we're going to finish the belt grinder. This 2x72" belt grinder is my own design that I've been working on for about a year in my spare time. All we have left is to wire up the 3-phase motor and VFD, get it configured, and take it for a test run. Oh, and install the overpriced optional power switch, and figure out why the belt is wobbling.

Does a rotary phase converter produce real 3-phase power? Real 3-phase power has its three phases offset by 120 degrees, but a rotary phase converter passes through the two 180-degree input phases, so how can it possibly make real 3-phase power? In this video, we'll throw a scope on the output of my American Rotary AD-5 and confirm that yes, it does, and we'll talk about how.

Today we're going to assemble and wire up a new American Rotary 5 horsepower phase converter for a maybe-soon-to-be-delivered surface grinder. That's a story for another day.
For the electrical connections, we're going to bolt together ring terminals and insulate with varnished cambric tape, rubber sealing tape, and Scotch Super 33+. We'll also mount a twist-lock receptacle in the panel to make it easy to attach the machine.

Today, we're making magnetic camera mounting locations for the shop. We'll cut out 1/4" A36 steel plates, weld up mounting brackets, and hang them from the ceiling using Unistrut and structural connector screws. This will give us a place to mount the Noga Big Boy articulating arm that we converted to a camera support in a previous video. This video has a little bit of everything: plasma cutting, grinding, welding, fabrication, and machining.

Today I'm finishing the install of the quill DRO on my PM935-TV milling machine. This adds a fourth axis to the 3-axis DRO already on the mill, and we'll set it up so the quill and knee DRO scale readings as summed together. This should allow us to move the knee and the quill at the same time and still retain our Z position.

Today we're working on a new version of the M12 CNC controller breakout board for my Avid CNC router with Centroid Acorn and Clearpath Servos. This version of the board has the combining logic so I can use normally-closed inductive proximity sensors with the machine and retain the auto-squaring logic of the Acorn system. I'll show the schematics and the PCB design. We'll do some testing, find some problems, make it worse, and eventually fix it.

Today we're going to test a bunch of different 3D printing filaments to see which is the strongest. Are carbon-fiber nylon filaments really as strong as the marketing would have you believe? Or is PLA stronger? Does the addition or carbon fiber make the filament weaker, as many have claimed? We're going to find out today. We'll put PLA, PETG, ABS, PA12-CF, and NylonX to the test. We'll measure deflection under load and ultimate breaking (tensile) strength and see what we can learn.

Today we're designing a real part and printing it in carbon-fiber nylon filament. (PA12-CF) We're making a bracket to mount a soundbar underneath the Samsung television I have mounted on the wall of my shop. 3D printing seems like an excellent process for this part, and PA12-CF filament seems like an excellent material. Let's test to see how strong it is and if there's something to all the hype. We'll design the part in Fusion 360 and print it on the QIDI.

Today, we're testing the QIDI Tech X-CF Pro 3D printer. This is a single-extruder printer designed specifically for printing carbon-fiber, nylon, and other high-temperature filaments, like QIDI's excellent PA12-CF. I'm not carbon-fiber nylon is "black aluminum" as others have claimed, but it's a pretty good material to have around a machine shop. We'll put the printer through its paces and I'll let you know if I recommend it.

Today we're finishing up the Multifix toolpost project on the Grizzly G0602 lathe. We have the machined cast iron toolpost riser that we made last week, so now all we need to do is turn a stud on the lathe to actually mount the toolpost. We'll get that turned, drill and ream a hole for the index pin, and get it mounted and tested.
