Local Alert System Message themaddoktor 2009-11-05 | After a show was over on tuesday night, i saw this blip across the screen. "LOCAL ALERT SYSTEM? WTF?" i thought to myself. the message was so vague ("a local authority has issued a DIRECT COMMUNITY ACCESS" ???) that i thought it was fake. i'd never seen an EAS message that said it had been generated by a "LOCAL AUTHORITY". not to mention the fact that there was no alert tone -- as you can see the feed was directly interrupted. it looked and sounded fake enough that i thought it had been made by a hacker. I called my cable provider and discovered that it was legit -- that it was a scheduled test. now, i've seen at least a thousand of these accursed EAS tests that have interrupted my middle-of-the-night viewing but never with something this vague. congratulations, local authorities. i've been alerted. also note the bad overlay on the left hand side of the screen and whatever video feed that is poking out underneath. apparently EAS needs to update their own damned systems.

Uploaded for anyone curious about the laser turntable.NOTE: THIS VIDEO IS NOT INTENDED TO DISPARAGE THE LASER TURNTABLE IN ANY WAY, ONLY TO SHOW WHAT CAN HAPPEN IF YOU PLAY DIRTY RECORDS ON IT.the ELPJ Laser Turntable is very sensitive to dust and dirt, as you can hear in this video's audio content. if you own one, ALWAYS CLEAN YER RECORDS BEFORE PLAYING THEM ON IT!There are notes in the video that talk about the transfer, but ... here's some quick factoids.- Straight Transfer from the ELPJ Laser Turntable into a sound card at 32-bit/96kHz. probably dithered down by iMovie/YouTube.- the record was REALLY dirty but in excellent condition. no scratches, just dirt. subsequently, the transfer reflects this because the record is being played back WITH FRICKIN' LASER BEAMS.- amplification is the only post-processing employed.enjoy.if you are interested in hearing other transfers from the ELP Japan Laser Turntable, leave a comment below. i did make a couple more from records in my personal collection, and have some that ELP Japan did themselves for me of really worn out records i'd dj'd in clubs.

Neuromancer / C64 Intro with DEVO Samples themaddoktor 2013-04-18 | This is the intro from the Commodore 64 version of Interplay's "Neuromancer" video game adaptation of William Gibson's famed novel, featuring 2 relatively large digitized sound samples (!!!) of DEVO's song "Some Things Never Change".This was astounding in the respect that the c64 wasn't known for being able to record or play back digital sound samples. At all. Yet the SID chip could do this with a bit of hackery, albeit almost always at the wrong speed. i assume that this was because the sample rate couldn't go above a certain amount of samples per second -- it's probably well-documented somewhere. but hey, it's an effing miracle the 6581 could even do this at all! it was developed in 1981!There were, of course, MANY '1337 demos that showed this ability off. Guess some "pro" programmers wanted to pull a "me too!" with it.As far as I know, no other version of this game had this 'feature'. All of the others had kinda lame musical intros, even the Amiga version. In fact, it's surprising that the Amiga version didn't have this feature because that system could have EASILY done this parlour trick -- they could've probably included most of the major parts of the song and still had plenty of room for the game. It was kind of rare to see an Amiga game WITHOUT sound samples used in some way!It's also funny to see the "Cabana Boys Productions" copyright/license on the title screen. That production company name was literally plastered over later printings of the novel after they had acquired the rights to the novel for media production. Most of my friends who were fans of the novel often made fun of those guys, since, for years, a film never materialised.Hey, Cabana Boys Productions : WE'RE STILL WAITING.

ms pac man video / audio problems themaddoktor 2011-05-28 | my ms pac man board malfunctioning in a peculiar way. high pitched squeal coming from the monitor, borked video (multi-coloured flashing horizontal lines), coin counter going crazy, bad audio ... not sure what the problem is but i would guess it's either sync board issues, z80 issues or perhaps one of the rom chips has gone south. dunno. any advice?
Powerbook G4 Video Cable Problems themaddoktor 2009-07-01 | Bad video cable inside my PowerBook G4 that only allows the display to be viewed at 2 usable video angles. while using this mo-sheen in my lap, just typing on it (lightly!) causes the display to freak out and flicker or glitch in a similar manner to the way it looks here.
G4 PPC Mac Mini Logic Board Replacement Video Problems (old video) themaddoktor 2009-07-01 | this is an old video now. originally, the video was to show apple support techs pr00f that the system was still flaking out badly after an alleged replacement motherboard was put in the mo-sheen under warranty. after many complaints and calls to apple, they finally replaced it with an intel mac mini, which is still functional to this day. it took way too much grousing at apple on my part to get them to replace it though.
