Located in East Austin, “House Zero,” was 3D printed by ICON’s next-gen Vulcan construction system and designed by Lake|Flato, known for their sustainable designs. Blending mid-century modernist ranch house aesthetics, the home features an elevated architectural and energy efficient design that highlights the benefits of resiliency and sustainability, with the digital possibilities of additive construction.
“House Zero is ground zero for the emergence of entirely new design languages and architectural vernaculars that will use robotic construction to deliver the things we need most from our housing: comfort, beauty, dignity, sustainability, attainability, and hope,” said Jason Ballard, co-founder and CEO of ICON. “Houses like this are only possible with 3D printing, and this is the new standard of what 3D printing can mean for the world. The innovative home, a 2,000+ sq-ft, 3 bedroom/2.5 bath home and a 350 sq-ft, a 1 bedroom/1 bath accessory dwelling unit, features ICON’s resilient 3D-printed wall system, which replaces a building system traditionally made up of multiple steps saving time, waste and cost. The walls of the home are made with a proprietary cementitious-based material, “Lavacrete,” insulation, and steel for reinforcing. Lavacrete provides thermal mass that slows heat transfer into the home and the combination of thermal mass, increased insulation, and an airtight wall increases the energy efficiency and reduces lifecycle costs.

Designed by the world-renowned BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group, the relocation and expansion of El Cosmico to a 60+ acre property will showcase entirely new architectural approaches made possible by large-scale 3D-printing including domes, arches, vaults and parabolic forms. The innovative development will feature El Cosmico guest accommodations, new hospitality programming, including a pool, bathhouse and restaurant, as well as private residences. El Cosmico will continue to celebrate the convergence of creative culture and the natural desert environment of the Far West Texas landscape.
Connected to the hotel, the collection of the BIG-designed three and four bedroom “Sunday Homes” available for sale feature expansive views of the Davis Mountains and range from 2,000 sq. ft to 2,500 sq. ft on 1+ acre lots. Housing is likely one of a small number of rate-limiting steps to the incredible future we dream of and want.
How can architecture, design, robotics and be in service to humanity to address housing needs? Can there be a universal solution for accessible, affordable housing that is beautiful, dignified and meets the needs of those who lack access?
If shelter and housing are that important, it’s time we treat it that way. It’s time we attack the problem just as energetically as we’ve attacked other human challenges in the past. We need a moonshot for affordable housing.
This is a time for global architectural, design, and the building community to come together with all the creativity, energy, passion, and focus they can muster to design the homes and the future that humanity wants… one where dignified, beautiful, and sustainable homes are available and accessible all over the world.

Registration for the competition opens in May 23, 2023 and architects from all over the world including firms, individuals, and university students are encouraged to participate. The multi-phase competition offers a total prize purse of $1 million (USD). ICON is committed to building a selection of the winning designs at multiple locations to be announced in the future.

ICON, a leader in advanced construction technologies and large-scale 3D printing, announced that it has received a contract awarded under Phase III of NASA’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. The nearly $60 million contract builds upon previous NASA and Department of Defense funding for ICON’s Project Olympus to research and develop space-based construction systems to support planned exploration of the Moon and beyond. ICON’s Olympus system is intended to be a multi-purpose construction system primarily using local Lunar and Martian resources as building materials to further the efforts of NASA as well as commercial organizations to establish a sustained lunar presence.
“To change the space exploration paradigm from ‘there and back again’ to ‘there to stay,’ we’re going to need robust, resilient, and broadly capable systems that can use the local resources of the Moon and other planetary bodies. This multi-home mainstream housing development in East Austin leverages ICON’s proprietary 3D printing technology to construct safer, more resilient homes to meet the current demand in one of the hottest real estate markets in the U.S.
Designed by Logan Architecture, the first floor of these highly energy efficient homes designed were 3D printed using ICON’s Vulcan construction system and its advanced material that is stronger and longer-lasting than traditional building materials. 3D printing technology provides safer, more resilient homes that are designed to withstand fire, flood, wind and other natural disasters better than conventionally built homes.
Nestled in the fast-growing East Austin neighborhood, the development has four homes, two of which sold within days of their listing in March 2021.
All four homes feature large covered front porches, covered parking, open concept floor plans, bespoke interior design, vaulted master bedrooms, large North-facing windows, secluded office/bedrooms, and minimalist architectural aesthetic.
Austin-based designer Claire Zinnecker joined the project to design the interior finishes and fixture selection. Her approach for these spaces was a modernized West Texas design with a simplified palette featuring natural woods, metal finishes and earthy tile colors.

For more visit, www.iconbuild.com/updates.3D-printed Barracks for Women & Men Serving the U.S. | ICON & TMDICON - 3D Tech2021-08-16 | The Texas Military Department (TMD) has partnered with Austin-based construction technologies company, ICON, to design and 3D-print an innovative training barracks at the Camp Swift Training Center in Bastrop, TX. As the largest 3D printed structure in North America, the 3,800 sq.-ft. building is set to house up to 72 soldiers or airmen at their primary facility while they train for missions in Texas or overseas marking these the first soldiers in the world to live in 3D-printed barracks.
“Guardsmen from all over Texas come to Camp Swift to train and to mobilize for deployments,” said Col. Zebadiah Miller, Director of Facilities, Texas Military Department “The printed barracks will not only provide our Soldiers a safe and comfortable place to stay while they train, but because they are printed in concrete, we anticipate them to last for decades.”
This marks the first project underway for ICON with the Texas Military Department and is a result from a SBIR Strategic Fund Increase (STRATFI) contract through the AFVentures to which TMD contributed funds. TMD and AFWERX, the USAF in-house innovation incubator, sought out to create barracks of the future by using construction scale 3D printing technology.
The 3D-printed barracks, designed by Logan Architecture and structural engineering by Fort Structures, is the latest project using ICON’s next generation Vulcan construction system and proprietary material to deliver sustainable and resilient housing that is longer-lasting than traditional buildings. ICON’s proprietary technology provides a new option for the U.S. Military to leverage commercial additive manufacturing to produce safe, strong and energy efficient structures at speed and with design freedom for our soldiers at home and overseas.

ICON’s next-gen Vulcan construction system will complete a 1,700 square-foot structure, designed by world-renowned architecture firm BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group, that will simulate a realistic Mars habitat to support long-duration, exploration-class space missions.
CHAPEA is a sequence of three one-year Mars surface mission simulations at the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston. The analog missions will provide valuable insights and information to assess NASA’s space food system, as well as physical and behavioral health and performance outcomes for future space missions. NASA will use research from the Mars Dune Alpha simulations to inform risk and resource trades to support crew health and performance for future missions to Mars when astronauts would live and work on the Red planet for long periods of time.
Future space exploration habitats have the potential to be 3D printed with additive construction technology to eliminate the need to launch large quantities of building materials on multiple flights, which is cost prohibitive.
“This is the highest-fidelity simulated habitat ever constructed by humans,” said Jason Ballard, co-founder and CEO, ICON. “Mars Dune Alpha is intended to serve a very specific purpose--to prepare humans to live on another planet. Life in Mars Dune Alpha will resemble the expected experience for those living in a future Mars surface habitat. Designed by BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group, the layout of the innovative structure is organized in a gradient of privacy. Four private crew quarters will be located on one end of the habitat; dedicated workstations, medical stations and food-growing stations are located on the opposite end, with shared living spaces found in between. Varying ceiling heights vertically segmented by an arching shell structure accentuate the unique experience of each area to avoid spatial monotony and crew member fatigue. A mix of fixed and movable furniture will allow crew members to reorganize the habitat according to their daily needs, as will the customizable lighting, temperature, and sound control – helping regulate the daily routine, circadian rhythm, and overall well being of the crew.

When it comes to the future of space exploration, it is only fitting that the next generation of engineers and scientists play a vital role in imagining that future. A team of undergraduate students from 10 colleges and universities across the United States – members of the Artemis Generation – are turning their creative ideas into reality. They designed a reusable landing pad that could be 3D printed from materials found on the Moon. In October 2020, ICON, an MMPACT partner, helped the students build a subscale prototype pad at Texas Military Department’s Camp Swift location in Bastrop, Texas, using a cement-based material and a gantry print system developed by ICON. The teams reunited again at Camp Swift in early March 2021 to conduct static fire with a rocket motor on the 3D-printed rocket pad.

DIU has been working with the USMC to leverage a commercial technology in Construction Scale Additive Manufacturing for military use and in the future to scale across the Services to provide a rapid and expeditionary construction capability. This will simultaneously support military operations and crisis response efforts around the globe.
ICON has been prototyping various structures with DIU and USMC utilizing the technology that combines 3D robotics, software and advanced material. In January 2019, Marines were trained on the software, robotics and material delivery sub-systems at ICON’s lab with the goal of a future field demonstration to build structures important for expeditionary construction.
After the successful training session, the teams embarked on a journey out of the lab and into the field to 3D print and stand up a Vehicle Hide Structure at Camp Pendleton.
With only a few hours of field training and shadowing ICON operators on site, the Marines took over as the primary operators of the equipment from start to finish during printing. The technology provides tablet-based system controls that allow even brand new operators to deliver high-quality printing.
At the onset of the project, the goal was to complete the print in 40-48 hours, with some expected loss of productivity for troubleshooting while getting the Marines up to speed. Some recent automation upgrades that increased the precision of the material delivery system paid huge dividends, and the print was completed in 36 hours with virtually zero troubleshooting time.
“We were thrilled to have the opportunity to hand over the controls of our technology to the USMC. This marked the first time non-ICON employees were the primary operators of our equipment and they did an incredible job printing the Vehicle Hide Structure,” said Michael Harper, Director of Field Operations for ICON.
PROJECT STATS: Tech: ICON’s Vulcan 3D printer weighs 3800 pounds and can print up to 2,000 sq feet. In 2019, the Vulcan printed 400-500 square foot homes in Mexico and the U.S. Structure: 4 arches were 3D printed, then titled to create a vehicle hide structure at 26’ length x 13’ width x 15’ height Speed: Vehicle hide structure print took 3 and a half days and ~ 36 hours of print time (continuous printing to completion capability exists if enabled to work in shift rotations throughout a 24 hour day) Material: Lavacrete is a proprietary, cement-based material with a PSI of 6,000 Crew: 8 Marines were trained on ICON’s Vulcan and Magma operations with 3-4 actively involved in rotations at a time.

With one of ICON’s recently debuted Vulcan II printers, commissioned by Cielo Property Group to print affordable housing in Austin, a nearly 500 sq ft ‘Welcome Center’ was printed in less than 27 hours across several days at the heart of Phase II of MLF’s innovative Community First! Village.
The only neighborhood of its kind in the nation, Community First! Village provides affordable, permanent housing and a supportive community for men and women coming out of chronic homelessness. A development of Mobile Loaves & Fishes, this transformative residential program exists to love and serve Austin’s neighbors who have been living on the streets, while also empowering the surrounding community into a lifestyle of service with the homeless.
Phase II of the northeast Austin development adds an additional 24 acres to Community First! Village, bringing the entire property to 51 total acres. When Phase II is completed and at full capacity, Community First! will have an estimated 480 formerly homeless individuals living in the Village—which represents about 40 percent of Austin’s chronically homeless population.
Architecture designs created by Logan Architecture for the next phase of ICON’s work at Community First! Village are currently underway and will feature multiple home designs arranged to be printed simultaneously to further increase speed and reduce cost. The set of six total 3D-printed homes will break ground this year and for the first time ever, three homes will be 3D-printed at the same time. ICON’s 3D-printing construction process, which makes use of robotics, automated material handling, advanced software, and a proprietary concrete, Lavacrete, offers a new way to quickly build homes that are both resilient and beautiful in a price range significantly below comparable conventional approaches.Vulcan II - Printing Homes Starting Summer 2019ICON - 3D Tech2019-03-15 | ICON unveiled its “Vulcan II” 3D printer for homes on March 11, 2019 and announced it will begin shipping the award-winning technology next month to a small group of early customers as well as actively accepting orders for 2020.
