2023 - A Second A Day Blake Richter 2023-12-31 | In the words of Kaitlyn Richter: "2023 // Not one we would ever choose to repeat again." This was a year of hardship, loss, grief, and change. We had an adoption match fall through, I lost two grandparents (one just last night), an aunt, a great uncle, a colleague of 9 years, and a student. If you have known me for a while, you know I am an extremely positive person, but it has been difficult to be positive this year. However, when I watch this video, I am reminded of the amazing parts of 2023. Through all of the hardships, I have become closer with family than ever before, my friendships have blossomed, I have started focusing on my health, I turned 30, I have had the best year of teaching ever, and Kaitlyn and I have adopted the sweetest dog there ever was which has been so healing for us.2023 was a journey and every journey has its ups and downs. Oddly enough, 2023 taught me more lessons than any other year in history, and for that I am grateful. Thank you to everyone who stood by our side during the good times and the bad times. We could not have done this year without you. Many blessings in 2024!

These songs bring joy to countless people and possibly even remind us of fond memories from our childhood. But what if the holiday season is difficult for some families? Are there any songs that articulate feelings of sadness and loss? Over the span of two months during the summer of 2023, I lost five people who were very close to me; my grandmother, aunt, great uncle, a cherished coworker of eight years, and a student. As someone who has not dealt with a lot of loss in my life, I wanted to find a way to not only cope with my own emotions regarding these losses but also empathize with others who may struggle with loved ones not being around during the holiday season. This piece is meant to do just that and remind everyone that “love will guide us through the shade.” I truly hope this song helps you as much as it has helped me through this difficult time.

This Newfoundland folk song tells the story of a lad who is expecting to have the trip of a lifetime with “the boys.” As they are getting their ship ready for their excursion, the lad’s wife is pulled on board by one of his shipmates. His wife becomes deathly ill while aboard the ship. The men do every logical thing they can think of to save her: they feed her cake, candy, fat pork, kerosene, and castor oil—you know, the essentials. The cure does not go as planned. This piece has a tragic ending, but just like all Newfoundland folk songs, the melody and rhythms of the song have an odd way of brightening your spirit. I truly hope all who sing this piece enjoy the ridiculous journey as you travel with your lads on an unforgettable Excursion Around the Bay.

Dr. Guy B. Webb Memorial Concert: March 27, 2022 Blake Richter 2022-03-29 | Dr. Guy B. Webb (May 19, 1931-January 2, 2021) was professor and director of choral studies at Missouri State University from 1980 until his retirement in 2014, culminating a teaching legacy of over 55 years. He previously taught at the University of Florida; State University of New York, Cortland; and New Mexico State University. His degrees are from the Juilliard School, Columbia University, and the University of Illinois. Dr. Webb trained generations of vocalists, music teachers,and choral directors who now work at institutions across the country. His choirs were featured at regional and national conferences of ACDA, and he served ACDA in various capacities in national office, along with serving as president of the Southwestern Division (2004-2006). Dr. Webb was editor and author of Up Front: Becoming the Complete Choral Conductor, (ECS Publishing Group). At Missouri State, he conducted the choirs and taught choral-related courses including conducting and choral literature, always holding his students to the highest standard of excellence. There, he took the MSU Chorale on countless tours both domestic and abroad. Known amongst his colleagues as aforward-thinking choral artist, he was always eager to introduce new music to the world. In addition to his inspirational artistry, Dr. Webb will be remembered as one with a kind heart and a genuine love for humanity. He is revered by those who knew him as always full of life, often instigating comedic antics that would always bring a smile to his colleagues and students. He is survived by his wife Barbara of 67 years, son David (Jennifer), daughter Marcia, grandsons Daniel and Andrew, and beloved dog Meko.
