Also included is a commercial break and promos for an NBC Movie of the Week and a Bob Hope special starring tons of dead people. This was recorded from WNBC in New York so the sound quality is better than it was on other affiliates at the time.
October 1976 commercial break on WTHR 13 Indianapolis eyeh8cbs 2008-03-28 | Including the entire commercial break here to show the high-tech video effect this station used to transition in and out of "Star Trek" episodes run off 16mm. I got a collection of K-60s from someone who taped a lot of these, but sadly this is one of the only commercial breaks that didn't get axed. A pox on his entire family for his lack of foresight, as the Star Trek shows themselves are worthless with the series now available on DVD. In fact, Star Trek was one of the first complete TV series to be issued on prerecorded video in the early 80s, so the only real use for taped reruns is the commercials if they weren't taped by one of those douchebags who cut them out! :) Commercials are: Blow-Care and Dry & Clear acne medication off videotape, and Stonycreek Farm pumpkin patch in Noblesville, which looks like it might've been off a second 16mm machine.
1981 WTOG Tampa Bay movie promo eyeh8cbs 2008-03-17 | From December 1981, channel 44 in Tampa Bay presents some good holiday viewing, including "Yogi's First Christmas" from a much better master than the one used for the laserdisc that came out years later! The station seems to think these are best viewed in a hot tub.

Don't know if all of these aired on TV as I'd already pretty much stopped watching it by then. The disc lets you keep playing these over and over if you so desire.

The last HD-DVD promo spot eyeh8cbs 2008-03-08 | I'm guessing this is the last (as well as the stupidest) promo spot we'll see for HD-DVD. Narrated by Don LaFontaine and appears to be sponsored by Universal, Warner and Paramount as they all contributed movie clips to this. A few of these promos were included on regular DVDs, but most including this one were only in 4x3 with 2-channel sound, so they didn't fairly show these with the best possible quality DVD can offer on a good system. (Some DVDs also have similar trailers for the Blu-Ray format, though the quality of those has been better.) Now that the format has officially died, we can all laugh at these trailers whenever they come up- I'm wondering if future printings of the titles that included these will be re-authored to ommit them?

This is my first try at using a program called Any Video Converter- thanks to ThatLogoDude for telling me about it. Sound here is good, I think the picture leaves a little to be desired but I'll try some other stuff and see how it comes out.

I saw a bunch of these at a flea market recently. At the end you can see Taco Bell's old building design with a working bell! Always thought the sign looked more like a tile store than a food place.

Lucky kids here get to drink 7Up with Santa Claus amongst the trees at Cal Expo, but they also had a setup at Montgomery Wards if you couldn't make it over there.

The Tower of Shoes and Clothing had a few locations in the Sacramento area, I always wondered why Tower Records didn't object. These stores were gone by the early 80s though.
1979 KOVR Sacramento station ID & joined-in-progress eyeh8cbs 2007-12-08 | A couple slides from KOVR, channel 13 in Sacramento around December 1979. Back then it ID'd itself as being in "Stockton/Sacramento" instead of the usual "Sacramento/Stockton". I think their building was near Arden Way, they've since moved to West Sacramento. The first says how great Delta College is (and you ought to go there and learn something instead of sitting there watching TV), then we're told that the show they're running to fill in the time after Monday Night Football will be joined in progress. (I guess whoever taped this did so for the football game then let the tape run to the end, but they later recorded a cable movie over the game yet were nice enough to leave this for us.)

It's like, um, one of those other candies out there, except this has peanut butter instead of, uh, what that other candy has. Anyone know the name of the guy singing this? He did a lot of commercials back then.
KTXL Sacramento Stormin Norman weather update July 1985 eyeh8cbs 2007-11-01 | Yet another weather update with Sacramento's favorite disgraced TV weatherman, Stormin' Norman Jacobs. He was busted in 1987 for 'lewd conduct' in a public restroom and hasn't been heard from since. I feel it's my duty to post any material from his broadcasting career that I come across. This includes a commercial for Snapper lawnmowers, which looks like it was a couple years old when this was taped in 1985. It's from 16mm as you can tell from the picture and sound quality; I thought that most stations quit running commercials off 16mm by 1982-83, don't know if this was at least transferred to tape beforehand or not.
KTXL Summer Film Festival 85 bumper eyeh8cbs 2007-10-29 | Announcement during one of the long commercial breaks with Jerry Chambers telling us we'll be back to Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds" in just a few more minutes. The Summer Film Festival was when they'd concentrate on classic movies during their weekday prime-time slot. The last year they did this was 1986, right before Fox prime-time started.
1985 KTXL Sacramento news update- return of Classic Coke! eyeh8cbs 2007-10-29 | Still going through my tapes of movies recorded from Sacramento TV- this is the end of a TV40 NewsPlus Update with Andy Asher telling us that Coke just announced today that they've acknowledged the backlash against "New Coke" and will be bringing back the old one. Afterwards is a commercial for Raley's supermarkets where you can get a free 6-pack of New Coke if you get your film developed there. Also featured here is another failure from the 80s, the Kodak Disc! Don't know who this guy is but he did most of the commercials for Raley's for a long time.
1985 New Coke commercial eyeh8cbs 2007-10-29 | This was right after "The New Coke" had been heralded as new and Coca-Cola started to promote it as just "Coke", though it still had the "New!" on the can. (Kinda like how George Lucas says the revised versions of the "Star Wars" movies are the real versions.) They brought in a new theme song (this time done in the style of George Benson's "On Broadway") with the "Coke Is It" slogan they'd been using a couple years already. The very day this commercial was taped, Coke announced they were bringing back the old Coke. It's been 22 years since then, so can we PLEASE get the word "Classic" taken off the current Coke labels now??
1985 Pepsi commercial- They changed my Coke eyeh8cbs 2007-10-29 | A relic of the short "New Coke" era, one that ranks right up there with the Edsel and the RCA Videodisc in terms of collossal failures. The people at competing Pepsi took great delight in this as you can see in this commercial where some old guys switch to Pepsi since they can't get the old Coke anymore.
KZAP radio commercial from 1985 eyeh8cbs 2007-10-24 | This commercial is for the legendary rock station, KZAP 98.5 FM in Sacramento. By 1985, it was a corporate shadow of its former self. It held on until 1992 when it changed to a country format, changing call letters to KNCI (Nationwide Communications Inc) then adopting the KRAK letters of the longtime AM country station, then a few years and ownership changes later it sort of went back to where it belonged as it became KRXQ, 98 Rock. This commercial was actually used for at least one other station; I saw the same one advertising a station in Chicago. I recognized the KLH speakers in this immediately as my dad had a pair which were already quite old then. The guy doing the voiceover at the end was one of the station's DJs, and also did announcements on KOVR channel 13 around the same time.

KTXL contest promo & Stormin Norman weather update 10/30/85 eyeh8cbs 2007-10-24 | Starts out with a slightly different version of the Get The Picture contest promo with Joey Mitchell and Big Jim Hall. Because I feel that all existing footage of Stormin' Norman should be available to the world, here's another weather update (sponsored by Wells Fargo) with him which aired during a showing of the movie "Halloween II", which is why he says to stay tuned "after the scary movie".
1985 KTXL Sacramento live contest winner! eyeh8cbs 2007-10-23 | From October 30, 1985, the first week KTXL's new Monster Tower was on the air. During a commercial break from the uncut (except for a use of the F-word muted out, and the end credits cut off) stereo broadcast of "Halloween II", this break started right after Michael Myers kills a naked woman in a hot tub. Those who weren't offended enough to tune out and complain to the FCC had an opportunity to win some fabulous prizes in TV40's Get The Picture Sweepstakes! Joey Mitchell from KRAK spins the wheel to see which of the many counties the 5 million watt signal reaches, and it lands on- Sacramento County! (Somehow it tended to land there most of the times I saw them do this.) After a commercial for Turner Nissan, Joe Slenski (sp?) gets through and wins a trip to Hawaii! He says he's gonna take his mom, but how is he going to explain the horrible movie he was watching to her? If he sees this here now, hope he posts and lets us know how the trip was! Like one of the recorded promos, this includes production library music which can be heard in Vestron's award-winning home video release, "Eroticize".
1985 KTXL Sacramento sweepstakes promo eyeh8cbs 2007-10-22 | When KTXL TV-40 switched over to their new 2000-foot Monster Tower, they ran a contest called the Get The Picture Sweepstakes, co-sponsored with AM country music station KRAK. Anyone know the name of the production music used in this? It was also used in the delightful Vestron Video release "Eroticize". Following is a Jerry Chambers voiced promo for "Dr. Zhivago", which was split over two nights since it was a long movie.
KTXL Go For The Stars general promo 1985-86 eyeh8cbs 2007-10-22 | This is the other version of TV-40's "Go For The Stars" theme song, geared to the adult audience. Again, the hot-air balloon is at the end because their previous theme was "Take off with TV40" and had a family up in the balloon. Sadly this would be about the last year of greatness for KTXL, as they later gave in to complaints and started cutting their movies, then the Fox network started up and ruined what was left.
1985 KTXL TV40 Monster Tower promo eyeh8cbs 2007-10-22 | In October 1985, KTXL started broadcasting from its new 2000-foot "Monster Tower" in Walnut Grove. This brought much better reception to most of the area, as well as a stereo signal, although until the early 90s they had an annoying policy of switching the signal off during mono programming. While that meant no annoying processed sound during mono shows like the other stations used, they would also sometimes forget to turn it on during a stereo movie or program; sometimes it would come on late or turn off early. To celebrate the new tramsmitter's first day on the air, they ran the movies "The Blue Max" and "2001: A Space Odyssey" uncut, in stereo, and with limited commercials (I taped 2001, which is where this came from) and called it "Super Stereo Sunday". The following week started a month-long "Get The Picture" sweepstakes where they would pick someone from the increased signal coverage and give stuff away during commercial breaks. Oddly the wheel usually landed on Sacramento county most of the time. I've got a couple of these live contests on tape which I'll put up soon. Joey Mitchell and Big Jim Hall, from country station KRAK, did this contest promo.
1986 Jimmy Swaggart show promo eyeh8cbs 2007-10-20 | This is kinda strange, since it aired during a prime-time movie to promote a Jimmy Swaggart program on Saturday morning, subject being "The Plague In The Land". Most stations that aired these shows did so only because they were paid to, so I wonder if they were paid to run this promo as well. I rarely saw promos for these, and when I did they were usually at odd hours of the day or night. As you all know Jimmy Swaggart got busted with a hooker in 1988, which resulted in a tearful confession on his show. I have that on tape somewhere but of course it's one that I can't seem to find easily right now! I didn't hear much about him after that, but looks like he's still in business today. I used to watch this stuff a lot for laughs, even before all the scandals broke. Sure wish I'd taped more of it.
KTXL TV40 Sacramento short movie promo eyeh8cbs 2007-10-20 | From 1986, a very short promo for an upcoming showing of "The Eiger Sanction". Promos like this were often shown right before the start of a show, or the last thing seen in a commercial break. I think these graphics were used from 1984 to 1986.
1986 KTXL TV-40 Sacramento News Promo with Leslie Nielsen eyeh8cbs 2007-10-19 | This was the main promo for KTXL's Newstar 40 satellite truck, which made it easier to do live reports. "Beyond The Nut Tree" refers to the Nut Tree in Vacaville, a sort of restaurant and mini-amusement park that was a landmark for many years and torn down a few years ago. Don't know how they got Leslie Nielsen to do these promos, there were a couple others with him as well.
Another Stormin Norman weather update eyeh8cbs 2007-10-19 | From February 1986 when KTXL changed the graphics and theme of its newscast. Stormin' Norman Jacobs was busted around 1987 for 'lewd conduct' in a public restroom and hasn't been heard from since. A Carl's Jr. commercial with Carl Karcher himself is in the middle. (Critical viewers will note that the movie screen in this commercial is the wrong aspect ratio!) This was recorded during the movie "Meatballs" so that's what Norm's talking about at the end.
1986 Cal Worthington commercial eyeh8cbs 2007-10-16 | Surprised there isn't more of these online- Cal Worthington practically owned the airwaves, his commercials were inescapable. He owned Worthington Chevrolet in Sacramento, and a few other car dealers on the West Coast. I heard he just retired not too long ago. I pretty much quit watching TV in the 90s, but all through the 80s these commercials usually included the "Cal Worthington and his dog Spot" intros that dated back to the 60s, along with the "Go see Cal" theme song that many misinterpreted as "Pussy Cow". The video glitches are from the TV broadcast's master, just adds to the flavor of local commercials.
Very 80s fitness center commercial eyeh8cbs 2007-10-16 | From 1986, an ad for a number of different fitness centers in the Sacramento area owned by Wenmat, Inc. Don't know if any of them are still around, but I always loved the music on this commercial and knew it'd be a true 80s relic 20 years later. I swear there are some colors that didn't even exist until the 1980s.
1986 SelecTV commercial eyeh8cbs 2007-10-16 | I think SelecTV was in several areas of the US, but they advertised specifically to Sacramento since cable was not available here til about 1987. This was a service where you rented a microwave antenna and tuner to get the channel; it was easy to build your own and get it for free however. In Sacramento prior to being SelecTV this was called ONTV, and MovieVision before that. I'd almost convinced my parents to try it out around this time, but was horrified when I called and asked if they were in stereo and was told 'no'! (Empire Strikes Back in MONO?? I don't think so!) I wasn't the least bit sorry when they went out of business shortly afterwards.
1986 KTXL movie promo and bumper eyeh8cbs 2007-10-16 | Promo for TV40's showing of "Damnation Alley" later that day (note the anamorphic squeeze at the end, foreshadowing the later misuse of widescreen TVs), then a bumper for the Sunday afternoon Award Movie's showing of "Class". Announcer Jerry Chambers frequently said "We'll return to our stars..." on these. Even in the afternoon, they'd run uncensored movies- this one included a 'wardrobe malfunction' that rivals the one almost two decades later, yet somehow the world did not come to an end.

1986 Burger King Im Not Herb commercial eyeh8cbs 2007-10-16 | This was a month or so into the "Herb" campaign, where Burger King publicly scorned a man named Herb who supposedly was the only person in the world who had never eaten a Whopper. If you went in and told them you're not Herb, or at least not the Herb they were looking for, you could get a Whopper for 99 cents. This is the only commercial I have in this series; I thought the final one kind of ruined it because they actually showed Herb on camera.

In fact I saw this commercial all the time but didn't know who this guy was then, but he's earned my respect now thanks to all the bargain DVDs his movies have shown up on.
