The all new Rocketship Chassis is finally here, and will be taking the place of our Rock Bouncer X Chassis. We have made a TON of design changes since we built Wes Kean's Rocketship, and we are excited to offer this chassis!
We have had a ton of interest in people wanting to know when the Rocketship chassis that Wes Kean drives will ever be available from Wide Open Design. The answer is NOW! When we designed the Rocketship chassis, we knew that traditional Rock bouncer chassis could be substantially improved by rethinking the suspension geometry, drivers control lay out, part placement, and overall ride height. We looked out of the box to design a chassis like no other for Wes to race in. We have bow built a few more of these chassis for individuals to ride and race. Changes have been made to each chassis to make them be better and better. Different drive train choices, a little more room here and some storage there. We have used a few different seat choices that have required some fine tuning to make sure that everything works optimally to provide peak performance. The chassis always seemed to be moving and changing designs. That is until now. We have finally nailed down this chassis where we can comfortably say that it is truly the best design that we have had.

wideopendesign.com/off-road/cooling-system/combo-unitsZack Roys FJ Inspired Revolution 2.0 Turnkey Build PreviewWide Open Design2023-11-03 | We love taking on a challenge of new ideas and throwing in our custom touches on a build. This new build is for Zack Roy of Lexington, KY. It's a fine example of a custom build that uses one of our tried and true platforms. Zack wanted the room of a four seat buggy and all of the performance that we could give him with it. We decided on a Revolution 2.0 chassis and then added an FJ-40 hood. We built the front bib from 1/8" 5052 aluminum to fit the narrowed down hood and then shortened an original FJ-40 grille to match. That set the look that we wanted to get started with. Next came the Mast Motorsports 427 cubic inch Gen V LT engine backed up by a turbo 400 and an Atlas transfer case. For axles, we went with Crane 14 bolt front and rear axles. We outfitted those housings with magnum knuckles and unit bearings. 40 Spline axles from RCV fill the insides along with 40 spline spools. Four wheel steering will help the four seat chassis get around great through the trails and the woods. Radflo 2.0 coil overs and 2.5" diameter bypass shocks control the ride. The PRP seats will keep everyone riding comfortable out on the trails. We selected the Garmin Tread Baja Race GPS and it serves as the centerpiece of the dash in the vehicle followed up by a full rugged radio communications set up. This buggy has a TON of the detailed work that we enjoy putting into all of our builds. Our buggies roll out with a little heart and soul in them, as each one is unique. Check out all of the pictures of this thing and let us know what you think about it! The next step will be a tear down and full weld out for the chassis, then that will head out to powder coat. The body is getting painted with automotive paint and we can't wait to see everything with a little color splashed on.
We are are releasing this as the first Production tube chassis JKU on the market. It's been designed from the ground up to shine as a dedicated off-road rig, with its most defining feature being the ability to fit four full sized adults without sacrificing comfort or performance.
In this video, we showcase the build we did for Tom Joseph, alongside many of the features and concepts we plan to roll out on future builds. From a ton of different tech, to the many details we put into the design and fab work. Check it out!
Tom Joseph came to us looking for something more than just a normal off the shelf build. We had the idea of bringing the 4 Door Jk chassis to life for a new product line and Tom was the perfect guy to do that with. We used this build to really dial in all of the features and options that we wanted to utilize in the 4 Door Jk Jeep chassis builds that will be following this one.
From the obviously custom one off dash and console, to the frenched tail lights, we tried to cover all of the bases and put in a ton of detail work to build a truly unique vehicle. One of the most noticeable things we did was the pocketing in the body armor. We took the 1/4" thick aluminum and pocketed out a design using our CNC mill. The result was something that we haven't ever seen used before on body armor and it gave the plain flat side panels some life. You can see the same pattern repeated in different ways throughout the build alongside many other details.
We also backed up all of the fabrication with a lot of technology. From the integrated head unit to the massive Holley gauge cluster and even air conditioning. This vehicle should have all of the bells and whistles covered.
One of the main goals of this build was to make sure it had room to fit 4 adults comfortably. We managed to fit 4 extra wide seats on custom mounts that give each passenger their own space. This is the only 4 seater we have seen that will comfortably fit 4 grown men. Cup holders for everyone and each person has an air conditioning vent to themselves.
We feel like we have developed one heck of a trail machine with this one!

We figured while we were showing off our new & improved kit, we might as well take a few minutes to explain why we use Hydroboost in our builds, and why we think you'll want to use it in yours too! With THREE options for master cylinders, an easily adjustable pedal, and an optional brake light switch, it has never been easier to install Hydroboost brakes on your build. This unit takes out virtually all the guesswork in creating a reliable brake setup that you can trust time and time again on your off-road rig.Chris Griggs Rocketship REVEALWide Open Design2023-03-03 | Chris Grigg came to us wanting to get into a new buggy built specifically for running the National Rock Racing Series, Pro Rock, Out Law and any of the other hill climbing race hill stuff that may pop up. He has been running a full sized Jeep bodied rig with On the TOp racing for a few years now and he was ready to get into a chassis built for racing. We took his parts and put them into one of our Rocketship Chassis. We did some redesigning to the middle of the chassis to stretch it out a little bit for his drive train and seat. We also developed a new series of trailing arms for us that are at home builder friendly. We are excited to have Chris finishing this thing up and running it on the racing series. We can't wait to see how he does in a buggy that he can see out of. With the Rocketship you also sit really low so the center of gravity feeling while driving one of them is amazing. Follow Chris over at On The Top racing to stay up to date on how the buggy is coming along.Wes Kean Podium Finish at Hawk Pride / Outlaw RacingWide Open Design2023-02-24 | Congrats to Wes Kean of Wes Kean Racing for an awesome weekend at Hawk Pride/Outlaw Racing and a podium finish!3D Scanning Service w/ Hexagon for an Off Road Buggy Build and CAD DesignWide Open Design2022-12-30 | Wide Open Design is launching a new service for their customers. Now you can send in your parts for 3-D scanning!
In this video we will show you how the parts are scanned & used in 3-D CAD software to make some changes to one of our chassis. Having accurate data for parts is the key to designing 3D assembly models in CAD. We have been drawing and designing parts with 3D CAD systems for many years and I can't calculate the amount of time this system saves us. We would spend weeks of time drawing parts that we would use in CAD models. Now we can have that data quicker and more accurately than we ever could before. We are always pushing ahead to develop new parts for the off road industry and we have carved our space out in building tube chassis for different vehicles. Using the 3-D scans has really helped us cut down on design time at the computer and in the shop. Before we would have to design what we could with the manually drawn 3D items that we had. Then we would start on the project in the shop and build it to a point where we would have to start using the actual parts to mock everything up to get through the rest of the fabrication process. Now using this technology we can place everything on the computer screen and design a build all the way through.
This technology isn't limited to off road or even industrial parts. We can scan literally ANYTHING and the scanner never touches your piece of material. The scanner shoots a wave length at the part and how fast it bounces back to the scanner determines what shows up on the computer screen; So if it is an antique piece, feel safe in knowing nothing will be damaged when it is scanned. If you are still questioning whether or not we can scan it, shoot us a picture and we can let you know if we can do it or not!
We are using our Hexagon 7 Axis arm that has a reach of 3 meters in any direction for the scanning base. By using a scanner that is on an arm there is no need for "Targets" like with a hand held scanner.
I hope this video introduces 3D scanning and its benifits to some people, and clears up any questions you had about the process. With that being said, if you have any questions, leave a comment below!
If you are interested in having your parts scanned contact us at - Wide Open Design 500 West Lytle Street Murfreesboro, TN 37130
We finished up this ready to ride Jeep LJ for Jeremy Knight and Wendy Knight.
We started the build off using one of our Jeep LJ Chassis that was set up with a Sport Cage and shock mounts for coil overs and bypass shocks. We kept it simple with an LS engine, turbo 400 transmission, and an Atlas transfer case. It had to be something that was reliable but still had good power when he needed it.
For Axles, we used a set of Crane Axle Ready To Ride 14 bolts with Magnum Knuckles, Big Bell RCV's, Light Weight Brake Kit, ARB's and 40 spline shafts.
Hiding under the blue paint is a 100% aluminum tub. We massaged it to get the right body lines around the tires. Then when the fast back cage sat down in that long tail section of the LJ it was apparent that we were headed in the right direction.
The chassis is built around using Radflo 2.0 coil overs and 2.5 three tube bypass shocks. We are able to get use of 100% of the shock travel on these builds and they ride and drive great. We added a Currie sway bar to the rear and it gives the Jeep a comfortable feel when driving.
The seats we used came from PRP and they are outfitted with their own heating elements.
We built a custom fuel cell that sits low in the tub close to the seats. We backed that up with a tool box that is the same height. So if needed, that can act as additional storage space on top of the cell & tool box. Behind the tool box we have just enough room for an electric cooler to ride. The custom built dash was hand made from 16 gauge aluminum, and went straight to powder coat without any body filler in it whatsoever. It houses a Holley gauge pod, Lowrance GPS with integrated back up camera, Rugged Radio set up, switches from Switch Pro , after market heater unit, Winters Shifter, and cup holders. BUT, the best part of all is the glove box we added for Wendy. We even threw her an extra USB charge port in there.
We could go on and on about the specs of this rig and it was definitely built with the best of the best when it came to parts selection. The stand out of this build however, is the overall package. No one part stands out and screams "look at me!". It all works together. The look, feel, and the over all attitude that this jeep has is hard to explain. But we can't thank Jeremy and Wendy enough for choosing us for their build. Now is where the real fun begins. The Winters Shifter is commonly used in the Rock Bouncer and Rock Crawling community because of the ease of use that comes with a Winters Shifter. It does not jam and has no spring loaded levers. The Shifter is just an all around great addition to your Off Road Vehicle. You'll never go back to whatever it is you are using now if you try an Art Carr/Winters Sidewinder Shifter.
It's always exciting to get that new chassis home and start the build process.
