Vic FirthThird Coast Percussion member Owen Clayton Condon writes music influenced by minimalism, electronica and taiko drumming. His newest piece, Fractalia, written for Third Coast Percussion in 2011, is a sonic celebration of fractals, geometric shapes whose parts are each a reduced-size copy of the whole (derived from the Latin fractus, meaning "broken").
The kaleidoscopic fractured melodies within Fractalia are created by passing a repeated figure through four players in different registers of the marimba. Condon's acoustic and electronic works, including Fractalia, have been featured as the soundtrack to video and light installations at Frank Lloyd Wright's "Fallingwater" and Anish Kapoor's "Cloud Gate," the famous sculpture (affectionately referred to as "The Bean") in Chicago's Millennium Park.
VIC FIRTH ENSEMBLE: THIRD COAST PERCUSSION Hailed by The New Yorker as "vibrant" and "superb," Third Coast Percussion explores and expands the extraordinary sonic possibilities of the percussion repertoire, delivering vibrant performances for audiences of all kinds. Since its formation in 2005, Third Coast Percussion has gained national attention with concerts and recordings that meld the energy of rock music with the precision and nuance of classical chamber works.
These "savvy and hyper-talented young percussionists" (Musical Toronto) champion the awe-inspiring works of John Cage, Steve Reich, George Crumb, Arvo Pärt, Gérard Grisey, Philippe Manoury, Wolfgang Rihm, Louis Andriessen, Toru Takemitsu, and Tan Dun, among others. Third Coast has also commissioned and performed world premieres by today's brightest up-and-coming composers, including David T. Little, Marcos Balter, Matthew Barnson, Ted Hearne, and ensemble members Owen Clayton Condon and David Skidmore. In 2012, the ensemble will premiere a major new work from acclaimed composer Augusta Read Thomas, scored for over 100 bells from around the world.
Third Coast's recent and upcoming concerts and residencies include the University of Notre Dame's DeBartolo Performing Arts Center, the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Austin Chamber Music Festival, Millennium Park, the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage, and more. Third Coast has also introduced percussion music to audiences in Texas, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Illinois, securing invitations to return to many of these series.
In addition to its national performances, Third Coast Percussion's hometown presence includes an annual Chicago series, with four to five concerts in locations around the city. The ensemble has collaborated in concert with acclaimed ensembles Eighth Blackbird, Signal, and the Garth Newel Piano Quartet, pianists Amy Briggs and Lisa Moore, cellists Nicholas Photinos and Tobias Werner, flautist Tim Munro, vocalist Ted Hearne, and video artists Luftwerk. Third Coast's passion for community outreach includes a wide range of residency offerings while on tour, in addition to a long-term residency with the Davis Square Park Community Band on Chicago's South Side.
The members of Third Coast Percussion —Owen Clayton Condon, Robert Dillon, Peter Martin, and David Skidmore—hold degrees in music performance from Northwestern University, the Yale School of Music, the New England Conservatory, and Rutgers University.

Through intricate patterns and selective dampening, they create a dynamic interplay of sound with M232 Vibraphone Mallets. The Vanderbilt Percussion Group, led by Ji Hye Jung, brings this complex work to life with sensitivity and precision.
Vanderbilt Percussion Group is the Blair School of Music's Percussion Chamber music ensemble, performing contemporary works for both traditional and nonconventional percussion. This particular quartet is formed by different years of students - Jordan Kats (freshman), Riley Hale, Sarang Shravan (sophomores) and Ethan Malcolm (junior) who are in the percussion performance program.

"I’ve always been fascinated with musical togetherness. Coincidentally, when Andrew Hutchens and Daniel Myers contacted me about a potential commission for their ensemble, one of their requests was that the saxophone and marimba be on equal footing with one another—not a melody-accompaniment relationship. I decided to take their request rather literally. Unity—and the lack thereof—also has a particular resonance in contemporary society. I felt it was worthwhile to attempt to build an artwork that reflects back on the listener notions of solidarity. Unity Synonym is dedicated, with thanks, to Andrew and Daniel."

Recorded with VF Giff Howarth Signature Series M160, M161, and M163.
Toshio Hosokawa composed Reminiscence in 2002 for Kunihiko Komori, who subsequently gave its premiere at Toyko Opera City Recital Hall in Tokyo on December 17, 2002. This enigmatic, often un-idiomatic work for solo marimba explores the dark, low register of the instrument, proceeding through slowly-evolving harmonies, returning often to brooding diminished chords at points of resolve. After brief moments of repose, the texture suddenly takes on a new shape, at once both measured and arhythmic. Hosokawa doubles down on the escapist-nature of the harmonic foundations, simultaneously establishing the gravity of Eb with the wavering nature of the octatonic scale. Eventually the instability subsides in a Mahler-like alternation of Eb minor and Eb major, eventually giving way to the final resolution in the major key. Taken as a whole, Reminiscence poses some seemingly existential questions, inviting us to live within an active and inactive tension until the eventual release finally arrives.

Video by Isaac Mead-Long: isaacmeadlong.comChristopher Whyte: A Cold StabilityVic Firth2023-11-20 | “A Cold Stability” draws its origins from the process of wine making, moving through four stages: the grapes and skins (drums), just at their peak ripeness before harvest, ready to burst, bubbling, popping, alive; the precision machines (metals) which sort and crush the fruit with angular precision, direction, brightness; the oak barrels (woods) in which the wine rests and evolves, imparting warmth, character, maturity, and finally the glass bottles and wine glasses where it finds harmony, clarity, stability, and concludes its journey. The electronics component of the piece is created using Ableton Live, which enables the processing of live sound manipulation and effects. All of the sonic elements of the piece are created in real time, without pre-recorded elements.
The title refers to cold stabilization, the final stage of bottling in which some wines are chilled to temperatures as close to freezing as possible in order to prevent the formation of tartaric acid crystals. Upon reflection of this process, I am struck by the way most phenomena around us must be stripped of their energy and heat in order to achieve stability, whether natural, social, or intellectual. The yearly cyclical process for wine makers of transforming a volatile natural substance into a carefully crafted, intricate, and artistic product is not unlike composing or learning a new piece. The process of distilling musical ideas into a new form follows a similar pattern, harnessing raw material, allowing it to mature and evolve, and ultimately, seeking harmony.

Initially recorded as a side-by-side demo video last year, the song was officially recorded recently and here is a finished play-along video. This is a very interesting combination of traditional Venezuelan Joropo (harp, maracas, bass and the two stringed-instruments, bandola and cuatro) mixed with very modern progressive arrangements by the members of Compasses.
