Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad: The Hosterman Local David245611 2023-01-11 | It was a cold November morning in the mountains of West Virginia. A 3-truck Heisler from the Mower Lumber Company is all steamed up and ready to haul a mixed freight down to the little farming community of Hosterman via the C&O southbound in the direction of Cass. The geared logging locomotive snakes its way through the Greenbrier River valley delivering its goods to the little farms scattered across the 13 miles of track. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad hosted their annual Heritage Weekend on November 2020 as a send-off for the season. November 5th featured the legendary Cass Scenic Railroad Heisler No.6 (sporting a star brass 5 chime whistle of Southern Pacific descent.) which at the time was used for the Durbin Rocket excursions. It is said by 2023 all steam will be based out of Cass with the completion of the C&O line to Durbin at some point this year. While steam will be based out of Cass, the sights of the Heisler chugging along the C&O will stay for years to come. And even possibly a climax, a few shays, and possibly a 2-8-0! The future of the C&O Greenbrier Subdivision looks bright and many more runs like this will soon come.
Mountain Thunders Last Battle Cry: Western Maryland Scenic Railroad David245611 2020-05-08 | Apologies for my 2-year absence. A lot of issues have happened over my hiatus.On April 6th, 2016 the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad hosted a charter honoring their pride and joy 734. A 2-8-0 that has thundered its way to Frostburg for 2 decades thus giving it the name "Mountain Thunder.". The locomotive after April of that year was down for a 1472 boiler inspection. Via 2020, the 734 still sits at the WMSR yards in Ridgley, WV in rather sorry shape. One can hope this engine will be fixed up again after the 1309 and will continue its legacy once again someday in the future. This charter featured 734 hauling a photo freight up to Woodcock Hollow since, at the time, a washout prevented trains from going to Frostburg. It should be noted as well that 734 suffered a ruptured dry pipe near Woodcock Hollow, and the engine could not continue up the grade and had to limp back to Ridgley. And we were treated with runbys from out passenger locomotive WM GP30 #501. We were also treated with a cabride in 734 from Cumberland to past Helmstetter Curve.
Steam In the Valley 2016: NKP 767(765) David245611 2017-06-09 | We venture off into the Cuyahoga Valley in Ohio to see Nickle Plate Berkshire 765 renumbered as 767. Was the first time seeing this massive berkshire in person, and it was an impressive sight to see. Towards the end of the day, the engine ran 2 runbys with one of them featuring famous 765 engineer Rich Melvin as a final salute before retirement.
Cass Scenic Railroad: Various Runs of 2016 David245611 2017-04-14 | A compilation of most of the footage I shot at Cass through out 2016. Including the first run of the season, and the last. The footage was shot in May, Jun, July, August and October (in relatively chronological order in this video). This year featured the return of Pacific Coast Shay #2 back into regular service, and is seen operating as the Bald Knob road, and pusher engine.
Cass Scenic Railroad: Membership Weekend 2016 David245611 2017-04-02 | July 17, 2016 marked as the last railfan event at Cass sponsored by the Mountain State Railroad & Logging Historical Association (At least for now). The membership weekend was a train powered by recently restored Shay #2 facing backwards and hauling a log car, 3 passenger cars and a caboose. The train traveled all 11 miles of the line to Bald Knob, with several runbys along the way. Though not a full blown Railfan Weekend, it did provide those that wished to have an RFW experience in 2016.
Cass Scenic Railroad: The Return of Shay #2 David245611 2016-06-11 | After an 8 year rebuild, famous Pacific Coast Shay #2 is back in operation, hauling a photo charter by Trains Magazine on June 3, 2016. Shay #2 is caught here, pulling into the depot after a successful trip to Bald Knob.
Cass Scenic Railroad: Cass in the Autumn (Oct 3, 2015) David245611 2016-03-03 | Cold, cloudy, and a bit wet is usually a scene that is dreary in the Autumn. However at Cass, it provided some great scenes while catching Western Maryland Shay #6, and Shay #4 storming up the mountain with the Bald Knob trains, and Shay #5 coasting down hill with the Whittaker Run.
Cass Scenic Railroad: Last weekend of 2015 part 2 David245611 2015-12-16 | Heisler #6 has the honor of running the last two trains of the season to Whittaker Station on this cool, clear November day. We chased the two trains around the Cass hill line, such as Back Mountain Road, Limestone Cut, and the Second Switchback.
Cass Scenic Railroad: Last weekend of 2015 Part 1 David245611 2015-11-14 | The last runs of the seasons ran on Saturday the 7th, and Sunday the 8th of November. In this part we ride up to Whittaker behind Heisler #6. Originally #5 was going to take us up, but was down so the Heisler took us up, and ran the next day.
Cass Scenic Railroad: Summer 2015 David245611 2015-10-07 | This was my first look at Cass' regular trains under the new management. Nothing much has changed to the trains, except that the Bald Knob train leaves 20 minutes after the first 11:00 AM Whittaker train. These clips where shot during the Whistle blow on August 1st, and clips shot the day after.

Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad: Climax on the Greenbrier David245611 2015-08-03 | After Railfan Weekend, participants were welcomed on the Durbin Rocket behind Climax #3 for free. We were treated with some spectacular runbys, including an interesting backdrop during our water stop. This was my first ride on the Durbin Rocket, and it was quite different from Cass, but was interesting nevertheless.
Western Maryland Scenic Railroad: The Last Summer of 734 David245611 2015-07-25 | My first time visiting the WMSRR, and the first time seeing the famous 734, which is also the last time I will be seeing her run for now. In case if some have not heard yet. The 734 will be out of service after this season of 2015 due to FRA boiler forms. Thus she will most likely not run for at least 5 years. On the plus side we will get to see the C&O 2-6-6-2 1309 next year if all goes well. Anyway this trip is just the standard trip up to Frostburg behind the 734, on this rather hot July day.
Norfolk and Western 611: Manassas-Front Royal June 6, 2015 David245611 2015-06-08 | (Reuploaded for some slight edits)After her rebuilt, Norfolk and Western J-611 returned back to Manassas after 21 years of being on hiatus. She made 3 trips over the weekend of June 6, and 7 to Front Royal. The 4-8-4 made the trips to Front Royal at 40 mph, with a total of 102 mile round trip.
Cass Scenic Railroad: Cass Railfan Weekend 2015 Sunday (Whittaker) David245611 2015-05-25 | The final day of this great weekend, and we head off to Whittaker like every other year. Except without 3 locomotives. It was just shays #4, and 6 that ended up at Whittaker, the heisler did however put on a show before we headed up the mountain. This weekend was certainly something. We went to Cheat Bridge for the first time in 7-8 years, and got to see some interesting cars, and locations along the way. The D&GV RR have put on quite a show for us, and hopefully they will do the same next year.
Cass Scenic Railroad: Cass Railfan Weekend 2015 Saturday (Cheat Bridge/ Spruce) David245611 2015-05-20 | Cheat Bridge is a location that a Cass locomotive has not been seen in 7 years. Here we see Heisler #6 with a string of 8 freight cars, and a caboose , and Western Maryland F7's 67, and 243 heading south on the old GC&E/ WM mainline towards Spruce, with multiple runbys along the way.
Cass Scenic Railroad: Cass Railfan Weekend 2015 Friday (Bald Knob) David245611 2015-05-19 | The end of the 2014 season marked the end of the WV Department of Natural Resources running the line, to the now WV Rail Authority run by the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad. This Railfan Weekend, I was actually impressed that the D&GV put on quite a show for us. In this part we will see mostly Shays #4, and 6 tackling up Cheat Mountain to Bald Knob. Participants of RFW were split into 2 groups, one group would go to Bald Knob, and the other went to Cheat Bridge on Friday, and Saturday.
Wilmington and Western: Last steam of 2014 David245611 2015-01-07 | After spending the morning at Strasburg, PA, I raced east to Wilmington Delaware to catch Wilmington and Western Railroad 4-4-0 #98 with the last steam operation for the year still on December the 21st. The 4-4-0 traveled to the railroad's halfway point Mt.Cuba and returned back to the Greenbank Depot. This would also be the last time I would witness steam in the year of 2014.
Strasburg Railroad: Two Christmas Trains David245611 2014-12-31 | On the first day of winter, we visited the Strasburg Railroad out in Pennsylvania, and witnessed the sights an sounds of two of Strasburg's locomotives: 2-6-0 #89, and 4-8-0 #475. The two locomotives pulled the loaded Santa Claus Special to Paradise, PA through the Amish farmlands of Lancaster.

It's now up again with better resolution. This was recorded on my 18th birthday, and what a treat it was. We'll be climbing up the mountain to Bald Knob with Shays# 6, and 5, and myself riding along in the cab of Shay# 6.

They have three 4-4-0 gas powered steam locomotives, all with the same one chime whistles. I didnt have my tripod with me, and so some shots are shacky, but enjoy the video anyway.
