The Nocturne no. 2 in E major showcases a Lento, solemn melody that contrasts heavily with the agitato middle section. The music becomes convulse and tense only to subside in the recapitulation, giving way to the main melody again.
00:00 - Nocturne in B major.
06:19 - Nocturne in E major.
Performer: Olga Gurevich/Luke Faulkner.

The poetry of Paul Verlaine had a profund impact on Debussy: both were inspired by subtlety and nuance. Each man sought to innovate by using rhythm and tone color as the basis for a new form of a pre-existing art.
In the Ariettes oubliées, subtlety, nuance, rhythm and tone color, converged to create a mature compositional style for Debussy, which, in turn, gave a heightened level of understanding to Verlaine's poetry.
This collection of songs sets the tone for all of Debussy's future vocal compositions in terms of rhythm, harmony, tone, color and attention to poetic detail.

Chopin's preludes are carefully planned, self-contained miniatures which avoided the improvisatory feeling associated with the 'prelude' name. This led some critics to consider them incomplete pieces. Liszt, however, saw them as innovative and poetic.
Although each work can stand alone, some scholars have suggested that the collection is one large work with twenty-four pieces, citing motivic connections among the preludes, and even musical connections from the ends of some preludes to the beginnings of others.
Chopin never played all twenty-four in a row in a public performance. In fact, he never played more than four in concert. Neither did he give them evocative names, like Schumann and Liszt did for some of their pieces that were of a similar character.
Hans von Bülow suggested some names for the preludes like Reunion, Tolling Bells, The Polish Dancer, and Raindrop. The preludes were dedicated to Camille Pleyel and Joseph Christoph Kessler.

Composed between 1903-5, it piece was initially not well received, but soon became one of Debussy's most admired orchestral works.
La mer is scored for 2 flutes, piccolo, 2 oboes, cor anglais, 2 clarinets, 3 bassoons, contrabassoon, 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 2 cornets, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, bass drum, cymbals, triangle, tamtam, glockenspiel, 2 harps and strings.
The work has proven very influential, and its use of sensuous tonal colours and its orchestration methods have influenced many later film scores.
While the structure of the work places it outside of both absolute music and programme music as those terms were understood in the early 20th century, it obviously uses descriptive devices to suggest wind, waves and the ambience of the sea.
But structuring a piece around a nature subject without any literary or human element to it - neither people, nor mythology, nor ships are suggested in the piece - also was highly unusual at the time.

It was his final composition, the third part in a cycle of six sonatas he had intended to create using solo instruments and piano (the previous ones being the cello sonata, L 135, and the sonata for flute, viola and harp, L 137).
The piece is notable for its brevity; a typical performance lasts about 13 minutes. The premiere, which was on 5 May 1917, was Debussy's las public performance. He accompanied violinist Gaston Poulet on the piano.

The sonata for cello and piano was written in 1915, and is notable for its brevity, most performances not exceeding 11 minutes. It is a staple of the modern cello repertoire and is commonly regarded as one of the finest masterpieces written for the instrument.
The two final movements are joined by an attacca. Instead of sonata form, Debussy structures the piece in the style of the eighteenth-century monothematic sonata, and was particularly influenced by the music of François Couperin.
The piece makes use of modes and whole-tone and pentatonic scales, as is typical of Debussy's style. It also utilises many types of extended cello technique, including left-hand pizzicato, spiccato and flautando bowing, false harmonics and portamenti.
Not surprisingly, the piece is considered technically demanding.
