“Government by Assassination”: Japans Years of Lead 1921-36 Eyes Wide Open 2026-07-03 | Today I cover roughly a 15 year period from 1921 to 1936 where Japanese society was subjected to near monthly acts of terrorism and violence. This period which I am terming the Japanese Years of Lead, or has alternatively been called "Government by Assassination" was marked by a spike of high profile political violence targeting the entrenched Japanese oligarchy. This period also saw the erosion of any vestiges of Japanese democracy, as the state transitioned towards its wartime fascist period. I also look at the increasing international tensions between Japan and the United States, specifically with regards to their shared Pacific Sphere of influence. JAPAN VS THE SOVIET UNION: WWI, The Siberian Intervention, and Japan at Versailles Eyes Wide Open 2026-06-05 | In this next chapter of the Making of Modern Japan Series, I introduce the Taisho Era, following the death of Emperor Meiji in 1912. The Taisho Era was marked by supposed democratization, an assertion that has been put into question in recent decades. The Taisho era marked the beginning of Japan's descent into Pariah status, as the country did little to support its allied in the First World War while going on a land grab spree in the Pacific and continuing to advance their own imperialist ambitions. The Brutal End of the Samurai Era Eyes Wide Open 2026-04-24 | In this next chapter of the Making of Modern Japan Series, I cover the period immediately preceding the Meiji Restoration. During these tumultuous years, the early Japanese state clashed with traditionalist samurai elements across the country. Led by the Three Great Nobles of the Restoration, Japan was forced onto a path of rapid industrialization and modernization, leading to great unrest. Modernizers and traditionalists clashed as the Meiji state oversaw an ambitious land reform program and the first foreign interventions of the new Imperial Government.
