Mount Snowdon faces a heartbreaking rubbish crisis | SWNS SWNS 2024-10-16 | Heartbreaking footage shows 'waterfalls' of 3,000 bits of rubbish including drinks cans and Santa hats left by people on Mount Snowdon.The cascades of waste on Yr Wyddfa Mountain in Wales including drinks bottles requires urgent action volunteers warn.An 'unprecedented' litter-pick on the iconic mountain left volunteers in shock - as they realised they had only scratched the surface.From a misplaced Santa hat to plastic bottles and rucksack covers - The British Mountaineering Council volunteers removed 2,765 items of litter from Yr Wyddfa during a two-day-clean up.Over 63 per cent of the items (1,737) found were single-use products - and the most prevalent brands were Lucozade, Redbull and CocaCola/Monster.On the first day of the clean-up (20 September), the crew saw an expert abseiling team descend into the Trinity Gullies on Clogwyn Y Garnedd, a steep area on the north-east side of the mountain, to retrieve the ‘waterfall’ of rubbish that had accumulated over many years. This litter collection effort is the first of its kind.Tom Carrick, BMC Access & Conservation Officer for Wales, emphasised the significance of this operation: "It's been amazing to see this finally happen after nearly a year of planning after our initial conversations.“We've had lots of positive conversations with members of the public walking up and enjoying their own day out. "This I still believe is the start of this work, we will look at what we'd do differently in the future, but also how we bring this work out to changing our behaviours and attitudes about what we take into the mountains. “For me, the most staggering realisation was the amount of single use plastic bottles within the gullies, I look forward to working with my colleagues across Eryri to begin to find a solution to encourage the use of reusable bottles on the mountainside.”On the Saturday, a 40-strong team of volunteers joined forces in the Upper Glaslyn bowl to collect and sort the rubbish. Equipped with recyclable bags, pickers, and protective gloves, the team worked under the guidance of qualified Mountain Leaders. The event not only aimed to remove single-use pollution but also to educate and empower the outdoor community. The team of volunteers, with support from the experts at Trash Free Trails, were encouraged to document their findings as part of the State of the Trails Report, contributing to broader environmental research and awareness. Dom Ferris, Founder and Managing Director of Trash Free Trails, said: “Our mission is to connect people with nature through the simple yet meaningful act of removing single-use pollution from the places we love. "One of our core values is that we never use blame, shame, guilt, or aggression. This principle is especially important when working on Yr Wyddfa.“One of the reasons we use the term 'single-use pollution' instead of 'litter' is because we have strong evidence that when these single-use products escape into the environment, they harm our wildlife, flora, and overall experience, thus meeting the definition of pollution."A large percentage of what we’ve found in the gullies are single-use products. By focusing on single-use pollution and its effects, we have a real chance of making a difference.”Despite the success of this clean-up, the BMC acknowledge that much more rubbish remains on Yr Wyddfa. The Museum of Curiosities lays claim to being one of the most haunted places in the country with thousands of cursed artefacts and spooky oddities.Staff at the Nottingham attraction now refuse to work night shifts there due to the amount of paranormal activity going on- with some of it being captured on camera.Hair-raising footage shows a 400-year-old human skeleton worth £12,000 falling to the ground and shattering despite nobody being inside the building at the time.In another creepy clip the same room can be seen filling with a mysterious mist which triggers the security alarm but then suddenly disappears.Owner Steve Wesson, 52, says its not uncommon for the alarm to get tripped 'by ghosts' in the middle of the night while items are often moved about by spiritsThe former paranormal investigator has spent several years building up a collection of thousands of eerie objects and curiosities inside his house of horrors.He said: "When you get a collection and it gets too big, it turns into a museum. "I used to go ghost hunting. As we went around we collected bits and bobs, oddities and weird stuff. Now we’ve got four floors full of it. “The security alarms always get set off in the middle of the night for something. It was going off two times a week at one point and it contacts the local police."There was stuff moved around the museum while it was closed, stuff does get moved around a lot. "The mist video was in June and only lasted 30 seconds and it triggered the alarm. The mist was around the whole room, there’s no draft in there or anything.“The mist has happened around three or four times since we’ve been there. “The skeleton that smashed was a 16th century skeleton in the corner, it just blew up it into little fragments all over the room. "People said did we do that, we don’t smash £12,000 worth of displays. It shattered for no reason. “The staff won’t stay there after dark any more. Some people have been pushed down the stairs."It's a really bizarre place.”The museum is home to at least 50 real human skulls and features a bone library full of human skeletal remains as well as creepy dolls and mummified animals.There's also books from the Enfield hauntings, paintings done by serial killers, movie props from The Exorcist - and even the UK’s largest ouija board. Paranormal enthusiasts have come from all over the country and a film crew from the USA made the trip over for an episode of World's Most Haunted Places.Steve, who has run the city centre museum for nearly two years, added: “We’ve got quite a lot of human skulls now. "We’ve got old Viking skulls, old Satanic ritual skulls, we’ve got quite a lot now. We’ve got 50 in total. We’ve even got a Saxon skeleton."Steve has built up his spooky collection over the years and says he’s part of an inner circle of collectors who swap freaky objects. The building is an old cinema which has a graveyard inside, while just a few buildings up is where Nottingham’s main morgue was.Steve added: “We’re like a little club who knows everyone. We all stick together, if anything comes up in their collection, they ask if we’re interested. It’s like a select circle of the top guys.“The item that I like the most is a book from the Enfield haunting. It’s a book from the shelf at the time. It has writing inside that we keep private.“We’ve got dolls from the Island of the Dead Dolls in Mexico, they’re cool as you can’t even get on the island anymore. "We’ve got vampire slaying kits, we’ve got loads of different things. We’ve even got the taxidermy lion from the film Cleopatra.“I used to be the senior manager for a wine seller. Then I went on a ghost tour many years ago and it went from that. "The best bits are the bits that you get for free, the bits that people don’t want. Bird lovers have 20 parrots - and regularly take them out and about town | SWNS SWNS 2024-10-16 | A couple share their lives with 20 parrots - and regularly take them out and about.David Vickery and wife Gill have spent decades rescuing birds after starting with two cockatiels and two budgerigars over 40 years ago.Their collection has now expanded and including a range of different shapes and sizes from African Greys, to Macaws, and Cockatoos.The couple, who are part of the charity Problem Parrots, said more of the birds have been abandoned since the Covid pandemic.David said the problem was that once parrots have been reared by humans they are unable to return to the wild as they would not survive.He explained that their parrots come from people who 'don't want them anymore'.The pair are often seen taking around ten of the birds out as it gives them 'different things to look at' - such as trees, clouds and other birds.David, of Calne, Wiltshire, said: "Most people see a parrot as a great opportunity and say 'what an unusual pet I will have one of them'.'They buy one and then next year when they go on holiday they think 'what do we do with the parrot?'"In this country people hand rear them to make them more human friendly and they learn that their care giver is a human and they expect their family to be around them all the time. "It is sad news if you buy a parrot and then go to work all day the parrot gets very stressed and often pulls his own feathers out.".Mr Vickery explained how he doesn't like to see parrots 'stuck in cages 24/7'.He said: "They should be free in the wild but sadly people breed them and hand rear them in this country for the pet trade. ''They are not domesticated yet - they are wild animals."Parrots are flock creatures and when hand reared they soon learn that the human that feeds and cleans them are their flock and they get used to that. "However when they are fully fledged they want their flock - of humans - around them all the time. "So by taking them out - wearing harnesses to prevent escape - it not only gives them enrichment but it gives people the chance to see them up close."If you go to a zoo they are always either at the back of the cage or in their nest box and people can’t see their beauty and they are really beautiful creatures."For Mr Vickery, these creatures mean 'everything to him'.He said: "I love them all - I am just so passionate about parrots. My dream parrot would be a black palm cockatoo."David said that taking the birds out also helps the charity raise 'much needed funds' - which go towards vet fees.He said: "We do not collect on the street but what we do, is ask if people would like to make a donation for the ability to take photos or stroke or even hold a parrot. ''There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a child’s face when I put a parrot on his arm."Some of the birds we put through a program of target stick and clicker training - just as you might do with a dog - and we can tell they really do enjoy this. "Training sessions should take about 15 minutes but mine often go on for 30 plus minutes, simply because the parrots are enjoying it so much."When asked what he thinks of parrots being sold as a business David said that parrots shouldn't be in people's homes but in the wild."They should be enjoying their life in the wild. Man builds underground bunker and tunnel inspired by World War II’s Great Escape | SWNS SWNS 2024-10-15 | A man spent £35K to build his own World War II style bunker accessed through an old well and a 35ft tunnel - inspired by 'The Great Escape'.Dave Billings, 43, is digging deep into his childhood dream paying homage to one history’s most famous prison breaks - in his garden.Dave decided to build his own underground bunker and tunnel like that used by Allied prisoners of war who famously fled Stalag Luft III.The real story was later made into a film "The Great Escape" in 1963.Dave’s massive DIY project began 11 years ago when he constructed a small bunker on his property.The site originally had nothing more than an old well, so he built stairs which now lead to his 140 ft (13sqm) bunker.Last year, he embarked on the next phase of his project - a larger bunker which is connected to the first bunker via a 35-foot-long tunnel.Dave, from Derbyshire, said: “I’ve always wanted to find a bunker on the property, but when I didn’t I thought I’ll build one myself.“It’s a bit of a childhood dream, really.”Inspired by the iconic escape tunnel from WWII prisoner camps, Dave meticulously crafted the tunnel by hand and plans to line it with wood to replicate the original.The extensive project involves a tunnel stretching 35 feet from the small bunker to a new livable 320ft (25sqm) bunker.Although, not connected to his house yet, Dave plans to extend his house closer to the bunker and create a secret door inside his home that will lead directly to the bunker.His long-term goal is to create a fully connected underground network linking his house, the tunnel, and a new livable bunker.Dave said: “I want to be able to walk through the house, down into the bunker, through the tunnel and come up out of the well in the garden.“It’s like a secret passageway.“Plus, if I have friends over they can use the tunnel without disturbing my wife!”Dave has even constructed a "beer lift" disguised as a keg to carry drinks down to the bunker.He said: “I made a barrel lift because the stairs are tricky for carrying stuff like beers."So now I can just send them down in style."So far, Dave has spent £30k on his new bunker and he estimates the final cost to be around £35k.Dave said : “I spent about £4k on bricks and then other materials like concrete, waterproofing and insulation.“Since I’m building everything myself, I’ve been able to cut costs on a lot of things.”Dave is aiming to complete the new bunker by Christmas with plans to fill it with quirky gadgets including a remote-controlled fridge.He said: “I’m just doing silly things. I was given a £4.99 cheese making kit for Christmas - now I run my own creamery | SWNS SWNS 2024-10-15 | A dad-of-five who was given a novelty £4.99 cheese making kit as a Christmas present now runs his own artisan creamery - from his garage.Matthew Lloyd sells his cheeses for around £7 per 150g and has won multiple awards for his tasty creations.His interest in cheddars and edams started when his sister-in-law Sarah gave him a £4.99 DIY cheese making kit at Christmas in 2019.The novelty gift set included a cloth, a thermometer and a rennet tablet - containing milk-curdling enzymes - which was enough for one batch of cheese.Matthew loved the cheese-making process so much he started making more varieties and experimenting with different flavours.The business consultant has now built his own creamery in his shed at his home in Gobowen, Shrops., and is hoping to transform his hobby into a full-time career.Matthew, 50, said: “When I look back now it’s amazing that all this started with a novelty Christmas present.“I absolutely love the science of turning milk into cheese products. “It’s quite a scientific act. Some people hit middle age and buy golf clubs, I bought massive pots and a micro lab. “I was completely self-taught and was learning through books and the internet. “I’ve got lots of cheesy friends, everyone comes around for the cheese. I got sort of goaded into entering the 2023 Cheese and Dairy awards.“There were about 5,500 cheeses entered from all over the world. “I threw in a couple of my cheeses and won best soft cheese with flavourings in Great Britain and came away from the best international novice award."It was amazing and just thought I had to keep going to see where this hobby took me."Matthew has spent the last seven months converting his garage into a cheese factory and has forked out £5,000 kitting it out with second hand equipment.The five metre by four metre space features stainless steel work stations, massive 100 litre pots and a homebuilt cheese press Matthew built himself.He added: “After the competition I thought to myself let's get this to market if we can. “I’ve spent my career giving other businesses help to develop and grow and for once I was giving myself the advice to realise my own dream.“I took a sustainability course which helped me understand the journey of the food I was making. “I started building the factory in January of this year and finished at the end of July. "It really is men in shed stuff. It was mainly Saturday work. Now I make up to 10kg in cheeses in one batch."Matthew has launched his ‘The Rennet Works’ cheese company and is already supplying a local deli with two of his creations.He said: “I sell a halloumi-style cheese, I call it Hallouminati, it’s completely hand-made. There is not a single machine used, it’s all hand pressed. “I hand-built my pressing mechanism. My cheese is flavoured with spearmint rather than the standard mint. “The other cheese I make is the Templar after the Templar knights. “It’s a German cheese, a washed curd cheese. It’s an alpine style. That’s smoked with a Templar cross on the top. “It’s a very extensive process. That won bronze at the internationals and bronze at the British. “I am developing some Christmas soft cheeses for markets in the area. It’s a very young business and I can only produce so much. “These cheeses mature really quickly, these cheeses mature within one month."The cheese is flying off the shelves. I can’t make enough to supply the demand."I’ve got it in two very high class cheese shops, one being a mile away from our house. Up the Owls."Crisp appeared before Sheffield Magistrates Court today (Mon) charged with sending communication of an indecent or grossly offensive nature.Prosecutor Neil Coyne told the court: "This message referenced the Hillsborough disaster."Crisp, who was banned for life by the club, was charged by South Yorkshire Police with sending a communication or article of an indecent or offensive nature.Wearing an all-grey suit with a blue tie and glasses, he spoke only to confirm his name, age, address and to enter a guilty plea during today's brief hearing.His defence barrister, Miss Brown, said: "This is a serious and unpleasant offence, which Mr Crisp was immensely remorseful for, particularly in the police station when interviewed."He will appear before the court again on January 24 for sentencing. Paisley Peach, 32, was backpacking around the southeast Asian country with her husband, Julian De Prince, 31, when she was bitten by a horde of mosquitoes. The couple came down with a high fever on the same night - but Paisley was rushed to the nearest hospital after collapsing in her bathroom. Now, she says she “regrets not wearing bug spray” - and has vowed to get vaccinated for the virus before travelling again. Paisley, a burlesque performer and events producer from Boulder, Colorado, said: “I’ve never been hospitalised in my life - but with dengue, I thought I was about to die. “I could barely see straight, and I was in so much pain. “The experience was terrifying.”Paisley and Julian had been backpacking around Thailand throughout September 2023 - wanting to travel as much as possible before starting a family. Two weeks into their trip, they attended a rave in Ko Pha Ngan, an island in the southeast. Armed with tea tree oil in an attempt to keep mosquitoes away, Paisley recalls being “covered” in bug bites by the end of the party. On October 3, the couple woke up with high fevers. “We must’ve been bitten by the same mosquito,” she said. “We didn’t have access to a thermometer, but we both knew we had high fevers. “I tried taking a covid test, but it came up negative.”Suffering from “really, really bad” body aches, the couple decided to leave their hostel and find accommodation to isolate in. They rented a remote bungalow on AirBnB - which they had to take a water taxi to get to. Struggling to eat, Paisley began to feel worse - while Julian started slowly getting better. She said: “I couldn’t sleep - I was in so much pain. “I felt like all my bones were breaking, and my head felt like it was going to explode. “Then there was this really bad pain behind my eyes - every time I drank water, I’d vomit.“My skin was really warm and blotchy, and I couldn’t keep track of my temperature.”Just a few days on from when her symptoms started, Paisley collapsed in her bathroom. She remembers going “fully unconscious from standing,” and Julian, who found her, said her eyes rolled back into her head. “Something was very, very wrong,” Paisley added. “We went straight to the nearby hospital.“The doctor took some blood, came back and told me I had dengue.”Paisley’s doctors explained that dengue was a viral infection which spreads from mosquitoes. They also told her that her blood platelet count - which is needed to prevent and stop bleeding - was dropping, rapidly. A decision was then made to change the annual bedding-based plants in Long Gardens to perennial plants.This switch was made as they "require less water and energy in their production and maintenance"- according to the meeting report.Financial reasons also came into play, with the changes saving the council £48,000- propelling them towards the target of a £500K reduction in environmental services.Many locals, however, were upset by the change in floral displays- saying that they liven up the area. Nearby resident Steph, who declined to give her surname, said: "The council used to win lots of awards for their hanging baskets."The council offices used to have a wonderful, spectacular display of window boxes and hanging baskets. "But now the council are selling that building so they may not feel that they really are that bothered anymore because they are not having a big part in the town centre. It will be down to the individual shops and businesses to fund it. "I think that Cheltenham needs to stay beautiful and if it carries on this way it won't. "The town centre is not what it used to be, it is looking sad."It is looking tired and it needs a lift. So I think it is absolutely essential."Husband and wife Jacque and Geoff Gibbins say they prefer the hanging baskets as pesticides on the ground level plants can be lethal to animals. Geoff said: "I was happy with the hanging baskets. I don't want any pesticides being sprayed around the town which the council do, but they don't spray pesticides on these. "They spray pesticides all over the ground."Jacque added: "Our dog gets poisoned every year from the pesticides, so maybe hanging baskets are better. "In October we ran a little campaign and we thought they would cut back. "I have sympathy with the council, I really do. "I think it is a shame. Spreading joy is money well spent. "We are very upset about the pesticides."Other locals however supported the councils decision, stating that the time and money could be better spent elsewhere. Jane, who also declined to give her surname, said: "I think that the hanging baskets and the flowers- whilst they are pretty- we have moved on from that and we need some more sustainable landscaping that will look good all year round."The amount of man hours and watering and everything that it takes to keep those, really goes against the way that the country should be moving." The council report that was approved by its cabinet last week stated: "The council has a long tradition of planting its central green spaces with seasonal bedding plants in the Spring and Summer, as well as installing hanging baskets and window boxes through high footfall areas of the town centre during the summer. "The council declared a climate emergency in 2019 and carried a motion earlier this year declaring recognition of the nature emergency and committing, amongst other things, to embed nature’s recovery at the heart of all strategic plans, policy areas and decision-making processes. I drove a 54-hour round trip to rescue my grandma from Hurricane Milton | SWNS SWNS 2024-10-11 | A woman drove a 54-hour round trip to rescue her 93-year-old grandma from Hurricane Milton.Jennifer Seaman, 40, and her mom, Sue Schaffnit, 66, were worried about the devastating impact of Hurricane Milton and decided to drive from Peoria, Illinois, to Venice, Florida.The duo set off on October 6, at 10pm and made the 1,210 mile journey through Kentucky, Tennessee and Georgia before arriving in Venice, Florida at 7pm local time on October 7.Jennifer packed up her 93-year-old grandma's, bags with her mom and set off 30 minutes later.The drive back to Illinois took 34 hours and they arrived home on October 9, at 5am.Jennifer said she is unsure how long their grandma will be staying with them has her care home has lost power and the area has flooded.Jennifer, a stay-at-home mom, from Peoria, Illinois, said: "Around 9pm when things started to get more severe, I was talking to my mom."We were back and forth on the phone, checking flights, but everything was booked."It was pushing 10pm and we decided we should drive down there and do it."I went to my mom's house and we spent about five minutes deciding what we were going to do and went."We didn't pack bags or have a change of clothes."They set off at 10pm and spent 20 hours on the road before arriving in Venice, Florida.The pair made the 1,210.8 mile journey to arrive in Venice, Florida at 7pm local time on October 7.Jennifer said: "We were only at the home for 30 minutes."The staff at the home had a plan to shelter in place and encouraged residents to stay."I think for my mum and I, if something bad was to happen or if the storm was to take a massive turn and wipe people out - the last thing we wanted was my grandma to have died without family with her."They left Venice, Florida, at 7:30pm local time and hit gridlock traffic for six hours - only moving 100 miles.The plan was to drive as far as possible and stay in a hotel but they were finding that most hotels were fully booked.Jennifer said: "We were still calling hotels at 10am on Tuesday morning trying to find somewhere to rest for a couple of hours."We finally found a hotel just outside Atlanta, where we checked in around 11am and headed out at 2pm."Jennifer, Sue and Sue's mum arrived back in Peoria, Illinois at 5am on October 9 after spending 34 hours on the road home.Jennifer said she is glad she went to pick up her grandma and is unsure how long she will be staying with the family.She said: "As we were getting out the storm was picking up intensity."The drive home was rough, we were in tonnes and tonnes of gridlock traffic."Everyone was trying to leave."Grandma is very relieved to be here, she was very strong throughout the journey as it was a long way to travel at her age."We are so proud to have such a courageous woman as our matriarch "She is anxious to get back and see how everyone is, but we have seen the flooding in Venice and the power is out so we can't contact her assisted living home."Please subscribe for daily viral videos and check out all our social channels here: https://linktr.ee/swnsTo license this video for editorial or commercial use please contact video@swns.com

Terri needed six hours of 'life-saving' open-heart surgery for a heart valve defect last year, but remarkably, she managed to get back dancing just three months later.And now she has been pictured on the fabled Blackpool Tower Ballroom - after buying two beautiful bespoke gowns costing £2,000 each for the occasion.Terri said: “When The Blackpool Tower Ballroom granted me this wish I was, for the first time in my life, totally speechless. "I am a National Lottery winner and now I am dancing at the world-famous Tower Ballroom. I feel like I have won the lottery twice!“And this just seemed like the perfect moment to buy my dream dresses and go out there in style. It is a day which will remain with me for the rest of my life.”Terri, from Leicestershire, won The Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance (ISTD) Over 50 Bronze Championships in 2016, just two years after she first started dancing.But in 2017, she suffered a mini-stroke, and her fears about the cost of the hobby also made her feel like she would have to give it up.However, avid Strictly fan Terri kept going and since winning the lottery, she feels her regular dancing is keeping her young.She said: “I love to keep myself fit and active, so it was a real shock when I suffered the stroke, and it hit me very badly.“It wasn’t without complications and the recovery was a long road but I never gave up hope - I always remained positive and believed that good things would come into my life. “And good things certainly did when I matched five main numbers and the Bonus Ball and won my £1M Lotto prize with a Lucky Dip ticket!“It was not long before winning that I was seriously contemplating having to hang up my dancing shoes – dancing is a very expensive hobby. “But one thing I had always dreamed about, was to dance at the world-famous Blackpool Tower Ballroom.“I watch Strictly every year and every time I see those dancers at Blackpool it just fills me with emotion. There are no wardens on duty. British explorer becomes first person to travel the length of uncharted Amazon river | SWNS SWNS 2024-10-08 | A leading British explorer has become the first person ever to travel the length of an uncharted Amazon river.Adventurous Ash Dykes, 33, battled sickness and hallucinations to finish his epic 37-day trip by reaching the mouth of the Coppename River in Suriname, South America.The extreme athlete and his teammates Jacob Hudson, Dick Lock and Matt Wallace, kayaked continuously for the final three days and nights to complete the mission.And after suffering from sleep deprivation, infections and malnutrition, they saw strange visions before finally getting to the Atlantic Ocean.During their epic adventure, they also found the source of the Coppename River and became the fastest group to ascend Suriname's tallest mountain, Julianatop.Speaking for the first time since capping off the 600km voyage of discovery on Friday (4/10), Ash said: “To get to the finish line was very emotional for us all.“Those last three days were some of the hardest. In three nights, we had under five hours of sleep. So we were extremely sleep-deprived and started to hallucinate.“It was very hard, very difficult, very hot. We were suffering with heat exhaustion. We were dehydrated.“I don’t think words will ever be able to express just how tough it was. To get over that finish line was just monumental, just unreal.”Ash, 33, originally from St Asaph, Wales, but now living in London, headed into the centre of the ex-Dutch colony, which is 93% forested, in a helicopter on August 29.He and his team then spent the next six days fighting their way upstream in kayaks with 50kg of supplies - while being bitten by 300 ticks and vicious army ants.The group also came across a terrifying goliath tarantula - the world’s largest spider - along with snakes and vicious alligators, called caiman. They found the source of the Copiname River on September 3, before climbing nearby Julianatop mountain in the quickest ever time as a team the next day.But their biggest test came during their waterborne voyage from the start of the river to its mouth in their inflatable kayaks - as temperatures rose close to 40c.Ash said: “We didn’t see any other humans in 34 days. And we were using the sun to charge everything. We were starving, we were thirsty, we faced a lot.“One of the boats popped because it was over 37c, a few days before finishing, which is the worst nightmare.“That jeopardized the whole expedition and meant that we had to distribute all kit amongst the other three kayaks, and Jacob and Matt had to share paddling duties on one kayak. “Matt also blacked out as he had a really nasty infection in his arm. "He passed out for a good couple of minutes, and the whole evening was ruined then as he didn’t have his energy back."Matt said he could just see things in the distance that he knew weren't there, light lights or dark grey objects.“Jacob almost fainted maybe 5km before the finish, and Dick did pass out a few days before.”Ash said the team had to survive on around 800 to 1000 calories a day while burning through up to 6,000 - leaving them badly malnourished.They initially lived off a limited number of ration packs before catching piranha, stingray and wolfish from the river, which they cooked and ate.He and the others lost around 10kg each in weight and also suffered a raft of nasty injuries, which almost ended their mission on a couple of occasions.Ash went on: “Matt checked his boots in the morning, but he forgot to check his gloves.“He got two nasty stings from the most venomous scorpion in Suriname, enough to evacuate most people.“We had to take that very seriously, and luckily he did start to recover, otherwise that would have been an instant evacuation. “I developed a really nasty infection on the lower part of my shin. I was told I was pregnant with twins - but one is a cancerous tissue | SWNS SWNS 2024-10-07 | A woman was diagnosed with one of the rarest pregnancies in the world after discovering one of her 'twins' was actually a tissue which can develop into cancer.Lara Eastwood, 36, found out she was pregnant with twins at just six weeks along.She was given the devastating news she had lost one of them at her eight-week scan.But at 12 weeks Lara and her fiancé, Daniel Turner, 43, a physiotherapist, were told the dead foetus hadn't dissolved.She was told she was experiencing a twin molar pregnancy - when there is a problem with the fertilised egg which means the baby and placenta do not develop in the way they should.Lara was told she should terminate but her nurse's intuition kicked in and she fought for a second opinion. She was then diagnosed with a partial molar pregnancy with a co-existing twin - where the egg is fertilised by two sperm which results in three sets of chromosomes instead of the usual two.Her doctor told her there is just 44 cases in the world.Lara decided to continue with her pregnancy - despite the risk that the tissue from the dead placenta can develop into cancer.Now 36 weeks along, Lara won't know how her or her baby are impacted until the birth.Lara, a nurse, from Nottingham, said: "If I hadn't been medical and hadn't looked after patients with molar I think I would have made the decision to terminate."It was only because of my stubbornness and my instinct. "Hopefully I'll get a healthy baby and it will all be worth it."Lara and Daniel were excited when they found out they were expecting twins in February 2024 - after suffering three losses.Lara started to experience bleeding and pain but her scans continued to look fine and showed two heartbeats.The couple - who have a son Oliver, three, together - went for their eight-week scan just after Easter and were told one of their twins had passed away.Lara said: "I was grieving the one that was gone."I didn't want to eat. But I was very conscious that you can't not eat because you've got another one."It was such a conflict of emotions."At 12 weeks along, Lara went for another scan ready to try and put the loss behind her and focus on growing her remaining baby.She said: "I went into the room and knew something was wrong straight away."I heard the word molar thrown around."The dead one was still there - it hadn't been dissolved. I knew what that potentially meant."Lara knew about molar pregnancies from her experience as a nurse.She was given three options - to terminate the very next day, medically terminate in a week or "bury her head in the sand".Lara wanted a second opinion as she didn't want to terminate her pregnancy - having now experienced four losses.The next week she had a call from the doctor who told her it was a twin molar pregnancy.Lara said: "I said 'it can't be - mine had a heartbeat'."Molar pregnancies - it just looks like a cell. It looks like a mass of tissue."Mine looked like a baby."Lara pushed back explaining she had heard a heartbeat on four scans - which wouldn't have been possible if it was a molar pregnancy.She was referred to specialist who thought it could be a partial molar pregnancy with a co-existing twin - which forms a triploidy with 69 chromosomes.Lara said: "My doctor found 44 case reports of this in the world."It's beyond rare."Lara had a CVS - where a needle is inserted into the placenta to remove tissue - in May 2024 which confirmed her diagnosis.Due to the procedure she had a one in 50 chance of losing her living baby - including in the two weeks following it.Lara said: "I can't tell you how I even functioned."It just felt where ever I went it was more s**t news."Now we know it is a partial molar it can develop into cancer."Usually the placenta would be removed and sent off for testing but as Lara was still carrying a live baby her case was more complicated.She said: "I have got endometriosis. In five pregnancies I have lost four babies."I asked 'is there a chance I can continue?' - he said yes."It was my decision to carry on and put myself at risk."I can live with myself if this baby doesn't make it. I've given it the best possible chance to get here."Lara has been monitored closely and is now nearly at 36 weeks - but she still hasn't bought anything for the baby.She said: "We don't know if this baby is going to have anything wrong with it."Until I deliver I won't know."It's been the most horrendous pregnancy. "I feel totally robbed."Lara may be able to deliver naturally as her baby is at the bottom and has moved the dead placenta to the side.A decision on whether she will deliver naturally or via c-section has not been made yet.After giving birth the placentas will be sent off to a specialist centre to be tested.
