I actually saw this song live in the Malmö Arena, at the end of Eurovision 2024 semifinal 2. The Herrey brothers performed it to celebrate the song's 40th anniversary.

This is actually my second favorite behind "Zjerm" from Albania, but still, in my heart this is the true winner. It deserved much better than just fourth place. None of the actual top three (an opera vocal showcase, a ballad with ad campaigns attached, and an annoying joke entry) actually deserved to score as high as they did, at least in my opinion. "Bara bada bastu", on the other hand, is awesome in every way and everything I want out of a Eurovision song. Good on Sweden for finally leaving their comfort zone and sending a fun song!

Samira Bensaïd - Bitakat Hob (Famitracker 8-Bit Cover) (Eurovision 1980 🇲🇦)

cookiefonster 2025-04-18 | To anyone who speaks Arabic or can read Arabic script, I hope the romanization in the video isn't too bad! "Bitakat Hob" is the most common transcription of the song title, and the one used in the TV broadcast, so I've renamed the video to that. I originally was going to use the most common transcription around on the Internet (on sites like Diggiloo and Eurovisionworld) but there were some parts that clearly didn't match what Samira was singing, so I modified those. It's a tough language to romanize, I'll say that much.

Anyway, it wasn't much of a question which song I would cover for Eurovision 1980, because this song is a lovely hidden gem that deserved so much better than second last place. It's also the only time Morocco, or any African or Arab country, participated in the contest. The song feels like it came from a parallel universe where Arab countries participated in Eurovision each year, but that sadly isn't the reality.

I originally didn't want to cover "Waterloo" for Eurovision 1974 because the song is already so famous. But then I realized that this is by far the most well-composed song from the contest that year, so I decided to take a go at it, and I'm very happy with how this came out! I gained some new appreciation for Björn and Benny's composition style thanks to making this cover.

Both because Lenny Kuhr handed Dana her prize when the Netherlands hosted next year, and because it's by far the best song of the year. I'm sorry this cover took so long—it turned out to be a complex cover and real life got in the way a ton. As did national final season. I won't spoil myself on most of the competing songs for Basel 2025, but the two I did hear (Latvia and Finland) both are absolutely awesome.

cookiefonster 2025-01-20 | Finally I've covered my first German entry! It's my mother's home country and thus the one I consider mine when I watch Eurovision. I miss when Germany sent songs to Eurovision that actually sounded German, rather than those dull interchangeable radio pop songs in English from recent years. This is a totally cheerful bop and it was lots of fun to cover after the gloomy last two songs, even if it isn't quite my best work.

It was a bit of a dilemma whether I wanted to cover the studio version or the orchestrated version of this song. The orchestra version is more bombastic, whereas the studio version is more laid back. I felt the instrumentation of the studio version would fit better in 8-bit and the tempo didn't have so many subtle changes that are annoying to put in Famitracker, so I went with the studio version.

If you're wondering how I did it so quickly, I pretty much rushed to do this after I finished "Tipi-tii" because I like this song way better, and also I'm having a quiet weekend with very little to do. Anyway, "Dansevise" is an absolutely gorgeous song and I'm very glad it won 1963, because it stood the test of time so much better than any other entry that year. Another thing I love about this song is that it proves Danish isn't just the potato joke language—in the right kind of song, it will sound lovely and melodic.

I'm very pleased with how this cover came out and I hope you guys enjoy it too! I don't think I'll make a cover this good for quite a while.

My personal favorite is actually "Een beetje", the winner of the night, but this song is delightful too and better suited to a chiptune arrangement, since it has no slowdown sections. This British romantic duet has stood the test of time very well and fans of the contest love it to this day! Nothing about it seems dated or morally incorrect by modern standards. And frankly, it's much better than most of the 21st-century British entries.

cookiefonster 2024-11-24 | I originally wanted to cover "Nel blu, dipinto di blu" (aka Volare), by far the most famous entry from this year—it's very strange that it didn't win. But "Volare" has so many slowdown sections that are annoying to transcribe into Famitracker, whereas Sweden's debut entry is one of few this year not to have an annoying slow section. I don't mind when old-timey Eurovision songs have slow sections—they work really well in "Een beetje", for instance—but adapting them into 8-bit doesn't really work.

Honestly I mostly made this cover because I had to pick something from 1958. On the other hand, 1959 has a song that I'm really excited to cover. Which one will that be? You'll find out soon enough.

(Also, Swedish is a lovely-sounding language and I definitely want to cover more songs in Swedish for this project.)

cookiefonster 2024-11-15 | I've started a new project where I 8-bit cover one song from every single year of the Eurovision Song Contest, starting from its humble beginnings in 1956 and ending at the present day! For the early years, I will mostly cover upbeat songs, but there may be a few exceptions—we're yet to see. This is not one of those exceptions.

Also, I'm doing something new with the visual effects for these covers: now I'm back to showing NSFPlay instead of a screen recording of my Famitracker project file, and I'll make title cards for each song plus show the lyrics onscreen. I considered highlighting every individual word as the exact notes play, but that would take too much time, especially for languages I'm unfamiliar with. When I cover songs from later years, I'll use fonts that match the year's visual design if I can.

It was the biggest fan favorite of 2023 and in my opinion deserved to win, but it was always going to become a Eurovision icon either way. Besides, there are lots of iconic and beloved songs that didn't win the contest—just look at Fuego, Dancing Lasha Tumbai, or even Volare from 1958. Plus, this song made me fall in love with the Finnish language. But it seems like it's be such a nightmare to learn!

Snow Halation (Famitracker VRC6 8-Bit Cover)

cookiefonster 2023-12-25 | Seven years ago, on Christmas 2016, I uploaded what I thought was at the time my magnum opus—an 8-bit cover of the iconic song from the anime Love Live, Snow Halation. But in the years since then, I've found that cover badly needed a remake. This is something I've wanted to make for years but kept putting off. For the seventh anniversary of that old cover I finally did it! I'm just as proud of the end result as I was when I made my original Snow Halation cover.

I think that as a show, Love Live is just okay. It has some good moments and a few characters I have a soft spot for. It's nothing too groundbreaking, but it really doesn't deserve the stigma that people give it. I watched it in 2017 so maybe my tastes have changed now. That said, I'd love to cover more songs from the Love Live franchise because it's an absolute rabbit hole of bangers.

GalaCon 2023 (My first pony con): What was it like?

cookiefonster 2023-09-25 | One week ago, I went to my first ever My Little Pony convention, which was in Germany. It was such an absolutely insane experience that I had to make a video about it. I worked hard on this video and I hope I did the event justice!

This video also has German subtitles! If you're curious, I did not write the German subtitles by hand because that would have taken forever. Instead, I first plugged the transcript into DeepL Translate, then read through the output and made a bunch of little revisions. The tedious part was syncing the subtitles with the video.

cookiefonster 2023-03-16 | No matter how long it's been since I first read Homestuck—as of this video, eight years and eight months—my love-hate relationship with it will always prevail. And because of this complicated relationship with a webcomic that influenced my life so much, I still sometimes get the desire to cover one of the many bangers from its soundtrack. This was a really fun cover to make, especially because the original Unite Synchronization uses a lot of chiptune instruments already.
