PMD Explorers of Sky - Ludicolo DanceUltima Spark2026-09-23 | PMD Explorers of Sky - Ludicolo DanceFinal Fantasy VI [PC] - Omega WeaponUltima Spark2022-05-17 | Three lives (65,000 HP each), and unlike Kaiser, you have to whittle them all down.
This is the only battle where I used Quick for offensive purposes, since the constant counters would drag it out otherwise. Suboptimal YET AGAIN, but RNG gambling in this fight especially is REALLY annoying, so…I'll take what's given.Final Fantasy VI [PC] - Kaiser DragonUltima Spark2022-05-17 | Kaiser, the most infamous dummied monster of the SNES version, was probably intended to be available after defeating the eight dragons. This particular version is completely new; the dummy is still in the GBA coding, and remains unused.
One Barrier Change = one life (five lives total, 65,500 HP each); it changes to the next one when depleted of health or when it next Barrier Changes (every 30 ticks before its final phase). Throw up your defences and wait (and heal as needed) until his fifth Barrier Change before you attack (preferably with non-elemental barrier-piercing attacks). You WILL need Ribbons for Mind Blast in the final phase, so if it uses Cloudy Heaven, reset. (Addendum: I haven't tried this, but you could theoretically bypass its attacks in its first four phases with the Quick trick as seen in the Red Dragon video. Could be useful in the Soul Shrine.)Final Fantasy VI [PC] - Flan PrincessesUltima Spark2022-05-14 | They'll make you dance, too.Final Fantasy VI [PC] - NeslugUltima Spark2022-05-14 | Like Nestlé?
The shell is invincible (which makes its MP Kill status pointless)…if you still insist on using, say, Meltdown, make ABSOLUTELY sure Golem is still up, otherwise get ready to eat an instant-death Megaton Smash. (And if all like protection is down, and you accidentally hit it with a stray [non-shield] Firaga or something, better hope you have high enough evasion to avoid it.)Final Fantasy VI [PC] - PlagueUltima Spark2022-05-14 | Is there a list of whatever formations give possible preemptives anywhere?Final Fantasy VI [PC] - Abyss WormUltima Spark2022-05-14 | And no, I didn't feel like gambling with Debilitator RNGFinal Fantasy VI [PC] - Dark BehemothUltima Spark2022-05-14 | ...Final Fantasy VI [PC] - GargantuaUltima Spark2022-05-14 | ...Final Fantasy VI [PC] - Malboro MenaceUltima Spark2022-05-14 | ...Final Fantasy VI [PC] - Earth EaterUltima Spark2022-05-14 | The Cloister bosses respawn if you fall back in, so most of them have gimmicks that make them easily beatable (the preferred path is Earth Eater - Malboro Menace - Dark Behemoth). This one only uses physical attacks, so summon Phantom for an easy win.Final Fantasy VI [PC] - Gold Dragon #2Ultima Spark2022-05-11 | Like the Air Force's Bit, it has permanent Runic, but by this point you should have spells to bypass it; Flood in particular hits its water weakness. Do remember to equip confuse-nullifying equipment.Final Fantasy VI [PC] - Holy Dragon #2Ultima Spark2022-05-11 | Apparently it REALLY hated being clowned on last time. Hilariously enough, this actually was the first try.
Saintly Beam was previously used by the Phantom Train (33% chance every 15 ticks), and is exclusive to it in non-GBA versions.Final Fantasy VI [PC] - Skull Dragon #2Ultima Spark2022-05-11 | ResidentSleeper
The "ONLY dies if MP = 0" gimmick seems to have been intended for the original (in Kefka's Tower) at some point ("Skull Dragon lives on magical energy"). That one IS MP Kill in the final game, but you're probably going to beat it up with HP violence anyway.Final Fantasy VI [PC] - Red Dragon #2Ultima Spark2022-05-11 | You can safely wait out the expiration timer (100 ticks, or just under 2 minutes, from battle's start) in-between Quick turns. Otherwise you have to survive its onslaught of powerful fire spells and physical attacks (and its instant death special), since it's completely invincible (barring extreme luck with Setzer's slots).Final Fantasy VI [PC] - Blue Dragon #2Ultima Spark2022-05-11 | They couldn't even give it a new gimmick?Final Fantasy VI [PC] - Earth Dragon #2Ultima Spark2022-05-11 | Maybe it prefers symphonic rock instead?Final Fantasy VI [PC] - Storm Dragon #2Ultima Spark2022-05-11 | The "cloaks self in wind" gimmick doesn't actually do anything since Haste and Image (the statuses it's supposed to gain) are locked to it.Final Fantasy VI [PC] - Ice Dragon #2Ultima Spark2022-05-11 | You may have seen Ice Dragon's "duplicate" strategy in action with Vector Lythoses in Kefka's Tower. Of course, those were piss-easy random encounters, and the dragon is not. (Granted, Ice Dragon isn't DIFFICULT—Ice Shields are easy enough to farm—but still.)Final Fantasy VI [PC] - Statue of the Gods & Kefka #2Ultima Spark2022-05-06 | It's the Divine Comedy, now available on your Super Famicom! (Then again, FFIV did it first.) - Tier 1: Inferno (Hell) with Satan (Face/Visage) locked in ice. - Tier 2: Purgatorio (Purgatory) with the various monsters representing the suffering and the penitent. - Tier 3: Paradiso (Heaven) with the Virgin Mary (Lady, blatantly obvious in Japan where she's named Maria) in a Pietà pose (Rest). Remember to steal the Ragnarok and Ultima Weapons if you're playing the GBA version! - Tier 4: Dante meeting God, who tells him the meaning of life (Kefka, who tells the protagonists that life is worthless).
Also, another "it's suboptimal but fuck it lol" disclaimer.Final Fantasy VI [PC] - GoddessUltima Spark2022-05-06 | Aka "Sophia" (Greek: σοφία "wisdom"; you see it a lot in various ancient writings on philosophy [obviously, it's in the name] and mysticism).
Two attacks of note: Entice induces a Confuse-like status that nothing is immune to (though it has a naturally low hit rate) and can only be cured by KO'ing the caster (Gau can use this through Rafflesia; needless to say it you can cheese your way though any singular boss with it). Cloudy Heaven causes all KO's dealt to affected characters for the rest of the battle to induce zombie status instead of the standard incapacitation; the game considers it an instant death attack, so use Safety Bits and Memento Rings to block it. DO NOT USE RIBBONS OR AMULETS; they prevent zombies affected by the spell from being cured.Final Fantasy VI [PC] - FiendUltima Spark2022-05-06 | Aka "Sephiroth" (manifestations of capital-G God in the material world). …yes, the main antagonist of FFVII is named after the same concept. Well, he does have a god-complex.
It's the ONLY enemy in the game that uses Strago's Force Field Lore (sets all damage dealt and healed by a specified type to 0 [this overrides absorption]), so completionists should bring him to this fight. Locke and/or Gogo too, if you want that Safety Bit. (Admittedly you can get infinite Safety Bits anyway, but the RNG luck required for that is even worse, and it's not strictly necessary.)
Also, as pointed out by a Japanese comment, this may have been an inspiration for the Kingdom Hearts villain Ansem's infamous guardian (properly called the Dark Figure). Of course, Nomura was the original designer of the Triad in the first place…Final Fantasy VI [PC] - DemonUltima Spark2022-05-06 | Aka "Zurvan" (lord of infinity in the Persian splinter religion of Zurvanism).
鬼神 ("fierce god") as a concept has no real Western equivalent; they're frequently associated with violence, but aren't necessarily "evil" as such (eg. the "wrathful deities" of Buddhism, who destroy obstacles barring the path to enlightenment; there might be truly malevolent examples somewhere); notable pop culture references include the Fierce Deity's Mask from the Legend of Zelda and Luffy's Gear Fourth form from One Piece. I personally would've gone with "daemon" (note the "a") as a translation, albeit with the caveat that it's not fully accurate either.Final Fantasy VI [PC] - GuardianUltima Spark2022-05-02 | The GrauniadFinal Fantasy VI [PC] - Skull Dragon #1Ultima Spark2022-05-02 | It really is just Dungeons & Dragons!
The Crusader esper seems to be fragments and/or (more direct) aspects of the Warring Triad's power.Final Fantasy VI [PC] - InfernoUltima Spark2022-05-02 | At least you don't have to go through mine-cart garbage this time.
Rahu and Ketu are spirit-creatures from Hindu mythology, representing various aspects of the moon's orbit and said to cause solar and lunar eclipses.Final Fantasy VI [PC] - Gold Dragon #1Ultima Spark2022-05-02 | batman_seriously.jpg
Also, the Crystal Orb (maximum MP +50%) fails to impress when you can steal Celestriads (MP cost = 1) from Galypdes in the Phoenix Cave or the Coliseum. (Though you have to deal with the Phoenix Down common steal…)Final Fantasy VI [PC] - Ultima BusterUltima Spark2022-05-02 | You get a save point for beating it, so not completely worthless.Final Fantasy VI [PC] - Magic MasterUltima Spark2022-04-29 | Take 2, because I had forgotten about his berserk vulnerability (pointless in practice, but gotta go fast). Doesn't protect you from his final Ultima, though.
Safe method: equip Reflect Rings on everyone, cast Reraise on whoever, and sit back and watch as Magic Master kills himself. If you don't have Reraise…well, either you're REALLY masochistic or overleveled. Or both.Final Fantasy VI [PC] - HidonUltima Spark2022-04-28 | That's a bit too on the nose.
A grand trine (Grand Delta's original name) refers to an equilateral-triangle formation of three celestial bodies in the celestial sphere (or zodiac, or whatever). If you missed it, you can get Hidon to respawn by talking to Gungho again (12.5% chance each time, repeatable).Final Fantasy VI [PC] - DeathgazeUltima Spark2022-04-28 | Pool's closed!Final Fantasy VI [PC] - GilgameshUltima Spark2022-04-28 | *sticks tongue out*Final Fantasy VI [PC] - GigantuarUltima Spark2022-04-28 | Friendly old person.jpgFinal Fantasy VI [PC] - Storm Dragon #1Ultima Spark2022-04-26 | I guess the logic for having the strongest one be encountered first (if you follow the story's implicit direction) is to make the Eight Dragons look "fearsome" (spoiler alert: they're all weaker than this one).
Hated by LLGers in particular because of its typeless, unblockable Leaf Swirl (33% every odd turn when above 15,360 HP; instant death in such a challenge, better hope it doesn't use as its opener).Final Fantasy VI [PC] - Blue Dragon #1Ultima Spark2022-04-26 | This guy can use the extremely bugged Rippler attack, and you do NOT want Shadow to be hit by that. (I've heard the bug—which causes it to exchange more statuses than it should—was fixed in this version.)Final Fantasy VI [PC] - Samurai SoulUltima Spark2022-04-26 | Why would a samurai have an attack called "ASSASSIN Blade"? (Then again, Kingdom Hearts has those two character types as close friends, so eh.)Final Fantasy VI [PC] - Master TonberryUltima Spark2022-04-26 | Go to bed! Also, it uses Barrier Change, so preferably stick to non-elementals.Final Fantasy VI [PC] - AlexsoulUltima Spark2022-04-26 | Referring to the esper you can grab afterward. While using the Banish trick forfeits its Guard Bracelet drop due to how the battle ends, a) you can steal them from a random encounter in the final dungeon, and b) they're not that useful anyway. (Well, you can turn them into Hero's Rings in the colosseum, if you want more.) If you don't want to use that cheeseball strat, set Invisible status on your characters beforehand; Fury is a magic attack, so the possessed character will become visible. Berserk its minions so they can't cast magic (which muddles that strat up). I've heard the Banish trick doesn't work in the Pixel Remaster, so there's that.
Nice scene and all, but Cyan is STILL probably the worst character gameplay-wise.Final Fantasy VI [PC] - Dream Bros. TrioUltima Spark2022-04-26 | Sogno (left; Italian), Rêve (centre; French), Sueño (right; Spanish); all meaning "dream" in the respective language. Very last chance to get Mog's Water Harmony in the GBA version, if you didn't do so in the World of Balance.
Leviathan's opening attack (だいかいしょう, also one of Strago's Lores) refers to a tidal bore (a wave caused by the tides), but is frequently used synonymously with つなみ (tsunami, a wave caused by a large and sudden displacement of water). I'm also curious as to when "tsunami" became common usage in English…maybe around the 2004 Boxing Day earthquake?Final Fantasy VI [PC] - ChadarnookUltima Spark2022-04-20 | Looks like the eastern suburbs tbh.Final Fantasy VI [PC] - Behemoth KingUltima Spark2022-04-20 | In the SNES version, you had to defeat this boss properly (ie. both living and undead forms, rather than just Vanish/Banishing the living form) to get it to appear on the Veldt. As far as I can tell, this was fixed in the GBA version by tweaking this formation and fixing said Vanish bug.Final Fantasy VI [PC] - HumbabaUltima Spark2022-04-16 | I don't care if this one's suboptimal either!
The Mesopotamian monster Humbaba guarded the realm of the gods and was slain by the hero-king Gilgamesh and his friend Enkidu in their quest for glory.Final Fantasy VI [PC] - DullahanUltima Spark2022-04-16 | A malevolent fairy from Irish folklore, often depicted headless and riding a black horse. Can be warded against with gold. It's quite popular in Japanese pop culture…I don't know why.
