The latest – a boiler conversion at Mataura Valley Milk in Southland - will eliminate about 22,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions annually and establishes Mataura Valley Milk as the first all-electric dairy factory in New Zealand.We’re very proud to be supplying Mataura Valley Milk with energy - it’s an outstanding example of a single customer delivering benefits for an entire community.
Introducing NZs first hydro-foiling electric ferry, and NZs best commute Meridian Energy 2024-03-13 | We're bringing the world’s first electric hydro-foiling ferry to Lake Manapōuri!The Swedish-designed Candela P-12 will provide daily transport for staff and contractors servicing the country’s largest hydro power station. It’ll save 240 tons of carbon emissions each year – equivalent to taking 52 petrol cars off the road.The Candela P-12 is an exciting replacement for the diesel ferry we currently use to transport people across the lake. It’ll drastically reduce emissions and, at the same time, give passengers what’s arguably the best and most spectacular commute in the world.

And these spectacular glacial are also used to famr some of the worl'd best salmon!The Waitaki hydro scheme consists of eight power stations from Lake Tekapo to Lake Waitaki. Meridian owns and operates six of these stations from a control centre in Twizel, generating energy from water flowing from the Southern Alps out to the sea.The Waitaki dam was the first station to be built on the Waitaki River, as a ‘make work’ project during the Depression of the 1920s and 30s, while the Upper Waitaki hydro scheme began in 1968 in response to New Zealand’s increased need for power. Work continued until 1985 when the last station, Ōhau C, was commissioned.

Giving the public access to West Wind was an important part of Meridian’s plan when building this wind farm. The recreation area includes a viewing platform where views of the wind farm can be enjoyed, as well as walking and mountain biking tracks.Word of warning - it can get a bit windy!Public access to the recreation area is via Opau Road, and there's car parking for 60 cars. Through our partnerships we've been able to achieve many milestones including kākāpō numbers doubling to 247 known birds and the transfer of four kākāpō to Mainland New Zealand in over 30 years.We're proud to be a part of the team to help bring this taonga species back from the brink of extinction.

Makara School Building Karearea Meridian Energy 2022-04-11 | The big kids of Mākara Model School (MMS) in Wellington, have moved into their ‘new’ classroom. The new building was actually the original Mākara school, built in 1872. The classroom has recently been relocated from its old home to sit adjacent to MMS for the older students to learn in. This project has been a real labour of love for the Mākara community and Meridian is thrilled to have been able to contribute through our Power Up Community Fund.
