The Hubbub Method: How to Mix 9-11s Campagnolo Shifters with Older Shimano Drivetrains Allrounder Bicycle 2025-02-20 | In this video I'll go over the what/how/why of the Hubbub Method, a technique in the Shimergo tradition that's been around for over 20-years now and, in my opinion, continues to have relevance today, which is kinda cool. While not exhaustive--there are other ways to pair the two--the methods shown, hubbub and direct connect, are the foundational ones that needed their own in-depth video, as I couldn't seem to find one. There's a variety of reasons that your bike should be built around Campganolo levers. Horizontal Dropouts: Adjustment Screw Orientation ASMR Allrounder Bicycle 2024-08-11 | Someone in a forum seemed convinced that thee orientation was spring on the outside. I had to stop check if I had been misled these previous decades. Does the spring in fact go on the outside of the dropout?The answer is, traditional no, functionally no, but in rare circumstances maybe. The axle should be positioned below or just ahead of the seatstay to minimize stress on the dropout. Moving it rearward to gain tire clearance or to increase the wheelbase can be done but not without creating extra strain on the chainstay connection. The cap nut is designed so that one can turn the adjuster knob by hand.Threads on the dropout should be reamed.The adjuster screw should be straight and greased.Once the wheel is aligned, one should not have to tinker with this adjustment. It’s set and forget for the most part. And yes, the voice is mine, Omar speaking, for anyone who may think I'm plagiarizing anyone. Backpedaling Noise Explained: FSA Comet Megatooth chainring paired to Shimano CN-6100 12-speed chain Allrounder Bicycle 2023-05-02 | FSA will not warranty this problem but will offer their 30% off "crash replacement". Even though the bike was never crashed. Problem is they can't offer a product that will to solve this issue. They claim they cannot warranty a product that is being used in a way that it was not intended to be used, in other words, backpedaling. It's not designed to do that. This is footage of a customer’s new Canyon Neuron AL. Not just a standard rumble, clacking from the get go and especially noticeable on the backpedal. It seems to be cause by the champfered shape of the chain’s inner plate (make links) clicking into the FSA teeth. Her bike came with a Shimano 12speed hyperglide+ chain, and the crankset is an FSA Comet with a Megatooth 30t chainring (12SH). It's only got 100 miles on it, has been cleaned and relubed after each ride, but backpedaling has always been a bad rumble. When I inspect it closely it looks like the chain does not easily lock onto the tooth profile of the chainring.12:57 PMI see that other iterations of the Neuron came with a different crank, and if possibly, FSAs chainrings have been a problem. I can't replace it with anything other than an FSA chainring, or a new crankset altogether. So I'm thinking this might be a warranty issue if it was spec'd incorrectly from the get go.12:59 PMThe Neuron AL has no history with incompatible chains. Campagnolo Modified Dropper Remote Allrounder Bicycle 2023-04-25 | Built a dirt commuter out of a Framed Rendal I found in Marketplace for $350. Had the 31.6 Bontrager dropper post in my parts bin but I didn’t have a dropper lever, and the only ones I cared to buy were the Loam lever of the Wolf Tooth one. Kinda short on cash though and since I end up putting drop bars on everything anyway and since I seem to somehow effortlessly acquire Campagnolo ergo levers I had to see this work. Popped out the thumb lever and the two ratchet pins and voila. Hardest part actually was modifying the Bontrager post to accept an Odyssey cable knarp. And Dremeling out the transition from the downtube into the seattube so that the housing could slide easily. Ya that was the gnarliest part but an incredible study in how much excess tube extends beyond the weld. Ride1up hub noise (part 3 of 3): in which the problem is resolved and the hub is quiet again Allrounder Bicycle 2022-08-25 | Hub noise seems to be gone for now, hopefully for good. My best guess is that it was the re-setting or re-pressing of the left bearing that did the trick. If not that then perhaps it had to do with redistribution of the grease across the planetary gears. Ride1Up hub noise (part 2 of 3): “in which the the rear hub motor is revealed” Allrounder Bicycle 2022-08-25 | In trying to diagnose the knocking sound coming from the rear hub I disassembled the hub and found that the grease was largely missing from the planetary gears. The factory grease clumped up off to the side so I distributed what I could across the gears.Also the left cartridge bearing seemed to be not completely pressed in to the hub. Ride1Up hub noise (part 1 of 3): in which we examine the “knocking sound” Allrounder Bicycle 2022-08-22 | A customer noticed a knocking noise in the hub area. With the rear brake disconnect this is sound produced. Their only recommendation is to squirt spray grease into the side of the hub. In my experience often times this sounds results from bearings that are not in parallel planes. On rear hubs this is often the result of crooked or misaligned rear dropouts of not hastily pressed in bearings.Did check the dropout alignment and they are pretty misaligned to begin with. I hesitate to cold set aluminum though.
2022 Motobecane Super Mirage SL Assembly Notes: and why the tires keep going flat Allrounder Bicycle 2022-08-11 | In this video I highlight my top takeaways from assembling a 2022 Motobecane Super Mirage SL.1. Replace the rim strips. The inner tubes will blow up otherwise.2. Seat the brake housing in the brake lever. This might require you to re-wrap the bartape above the lever.3. Don’t feel bad if you can’t get the front derailleur to not rub against the chain. Flip the pin under the anchoring plate to the lower leverage position. It will increase the range of the derailleur. You may have to bend the derailleur plate to prevent rubbing when in big ring and the outer cogs. 4. Tighten the cassette lockring. It’s probably loose.5. Assembling the best sub-$1k Internet Gravel Bike: 2022 Poseidon Dropbar X Allrounder Bicycle 2022-05-12 | This might be worth a watch before you buy the Poseidon Dropbar X.poseidonbike.com/collections/adventure-bike/products/dropbar-x?variant=41091390832791#mz-expanded-view-367423367002To summarize how I had to resolve some issues:1. Use rotor shims to create more clearance between the rotor (aka disc) and the inboard pad.summitbicycles.com/product/syntace-disc-brake-rotor-shims-243006-1.htm2. Cut down housing length as short as you can without restricting the steering, and decrease the amount of flex in the housing that robs power from the brakes.3. Or just replace the housing with Jagwire Compressionless.4. Use Shimano SP41 cable grease on all cables. I usually dip the cable into the grease then wipe in of onto a small 1x1” sponge (cut from a dishwashing sponge). Then use that sponge to thinly coat every cable used. 5. Use open, non-sealed, ferrules or housing caps to reduce cable friction.6. Align the rear derailleur hanger with a proper alignment tool.7. Allrounder Custom Electric Bakfiets Frontloader Family Cargo Bike. (For Sale!) I’ve been a bicycle mechanic for 30 years and made this a few years ago for my wife to be able to to bring our baby girl (now 4-years-old) on her grocery trips and other errands. It seats up to 4 small toddlers and has a 500w front hub motor from E-bike Kit. The Schwalbe studded tires allow us to get out even in snowy days as long as the streets and sidewalks are plowed. The carriage is modified from a Triobike tricycle to fit this frame. The battery isn’t huge but we usually charge it every 10-20 miles depending on how much assist we demand from the motor . A larger battery could give you more range, but this worked fine for us as trips are all nearby, 2-3 miles out 2-3 miles back.We’ve had a welder/frame builder add reinforcements to the frame at the hinge, just for extra precaution, and then repainted over that work.We’d love to sell this locally to another family if possible or artist or anyone who’d rather be pedaling than driving.It’s custom mostly in the sense that there is no other like it. The frame was modified/reinforced by Billings Cycle works in Oakland, CA when we lived there. The box itself is carved out on the to accommodate the shape of the frame and the steering linkage.It started life as a simple factory-built longjohn or bakfiets or frontloader whatever you wanna call it, with a wooden front box and no motor. The hinge allowed the frame to fold in half, probably for international shipping purposes, but has never served any practical purpose otherwise.The carriage is from a new Triobike Boxter, which I purchased from and electric bicycle shop in Ann Arbor when I used to work there. The front hub motor replaced the front drum brake so we replaced the brake with a wide mouth Tektro side pull with salmon pads.Handlebars and stem have been replaced with a trekking setup which clears the top of the carriage but still offers multiple hand positions.................I'm Omar - East Bay bike mechanic, 35 years building and fitting bikes.
