Corrupted SaveI stayed away from all of the discussions online, and only saw them after I completed the game. I knew that people were generally upset, but I had no idea the extent to which that was true. I watched many reviews and let's plays after I was done, and I was inspired to make this video because so many didn't get what I got out of the story. It's my hope that this interpretation can help some people that are open to a more positive take on the game can find something valuable here that they didn't before.

The Mulholland Drive analysis clip I used it from London City Girl: youtube.com/user/LondonCityGirlMag youtube.com/watch?v=VvgRLTP3U5Y&Understanding Why Final Fantasy VI WorkedCorrupted Save2021-02-22 | In this video, I analyze the story of Final Fantasy VI, and explain why I think the game is still relevant today. Some classic games are the victim of nostalgia goggles, and revisiting them later in life can be a rough experience. However, I found that Final Fantasy VI was not only one that held up, but was actually better than I remembered.
All of my Final Fantasy VI footage was recorded off of the SNES Mini.
Thanks to the following people for their help proofing the script and encouragement:
Special thanks to Heavy Eyed to who helped proofing the script, but also helped me set up my new microphone and fixed up some glaring issues with the audio:

Far and away it's my favorite franchise. So I found the remakes of these games simultaneously exceeded my expectations as well as fell dramatically short of them. I made this video to suss out my mixed feelings, and hopefully it will speak to others that feel the same way.

They each attempt to do their worldbuilding through interactions with unique characters. Never painting a full picture of what's going on in the world, they show the perspective of how those worlds might appear through the eyes of ordinary workers - which is honestly, a point of view I'm more familiar with in life.
Very special thank you to Michael Kelly, the amazing composer of the music for VA-11 HALL-A for giving permission to use the music he created for the game. I bought this soundtrack twice, and shuffle the tracks into many of my playlists. Please check out his sites! twitter.com/garoadmusic http://www.garoadmusic.com garoad.bandcamp.com
SolePorpoise twitter.com/SolePorpoise youtube.com/user/SolePorpoiseHow Classic Resident Evil Came Back From the DeadCorrupted Save2020-03-15 | Thank you for checking out my video essay on the Resident Evil series. This is an analysis of the whole series and how the classic game mechanics have been translated to the newest games. There will be minor visual spoilers for the series as a whole.
I'd like to start off by thanking two people that have stuck around and endlessly encouraged me to keep making the video. Without their interest and support, I probably wouldn't have published a video for another two years.
Please go follow and support them, they're wonderful people.
I cannot stress how much I love Resident Evil. The series has not given us the most consistent output over the years. But it's one that - in spite of everything - has never been uprooted as the franchise I hold closest to my heart. (I will never forgive Paul WS Anderson for those movies.)
Originally, I wanted to create this video after playing Resident Evil 7. I thought it was so interesting that the game felt so close to playing a classic Resident Evil game while being mechanically so dissimilar to the older titles. I thought perhaps it was just the contrast coming off of Resident Evil 6.
After Resident Evil 2 came out, I decided I needed to replay the entire series and record all of my playthroughs. I recorded multiplayer and single player runs of the applicable games, multiple scenarios for ones that had them, the DLC scenarios, and some of the spinoff games like Outbreak and Revelations 1 and 2.
YouTube is full of great videos tracking through the series chronologically. They sum up the games one at a time recounting production highlights and tracking through the stories, characters and locations of each title. I wanted to pull back and ignore all of that and just look at how the game systems were set up and why they worked together to create the specific "Resident Evil" experience.
I may have bitten off more than I can chew. There are a lot of observations and points that hit the cutting room floor. I could ramble on for hours about all of the little details and threads connecting the games. I didn't mention ink ribbons versus checkpoints in the video. I also didn't mention how each game has a partner character regardless of the multiplayer aspect. Even Dead Aim had Fong Ling.
And perhaps one day I'll make a supercut of all repeating elements like mansion foyers, cranks, pianos, and climactic explosions. There could be an entire video on just the helicopters in the series, I'm sure.
In any case, I'm sure that this video barely scratches the surface, but I hope this gives some idea on why I think these newer games "feel" like Classic Resident Evil titles, even though they're clearly not identical in style.
I'm not an authority on the subject by any stretch; I'm just someone that has played this series quite a bit. All of these thoughts are my own observations, and Shinji Mikami himself could come slap me down for being incorrect. I would very much like for Shinji Mikami to interact with me at all, even if it's just to berate me.
I hope you get something from this video, even if it's just a spot of entertaining fluff. Thank you for watching and even just reading this blurb.
-JackDetroit: Become Human is Better & Worse Than You ThinkCorrupted Save2018-06-21 | Thank you for watching. I intend on veering away from doing reviews, and start doing more lengthy discussion videos. I want to avoid clickbait titles and hatred rants. Instead, I'd like my videos to be opinion pieces that very clearly express my thoughts and opinions about games and mechanics in non-condescending ways that clearly express that I do not believe that my opinions are the "correct" one.
As for this game, I enjoyed Detroit: Become Human quite a bit. But I've always said "just because you like something doesn't make it perfect, and just because something isn't perfect doesn't mean you can't like it."
I have a fair bit of criticism for the game. Just like myself with this video, I'm sure they would have enjoyed refining and redoing it until it's completely perfect, but that's simply not possible. At some point, you have to finish it.
All of this footage was recorded by me on my own playthroughs on my PS4 Not-Pro, and so there were some frame rate stutters and pop-ins from time to time. I did my best to be thorough playing the game. Though I did see a lot of different paths, I did not have the patience to 100% all timelines - I found many of the branches to be insignificant changes.
There were also many things I wanted to compliment and criticize in the video that I left out, because it simply didn't fit in the flow of the discussion. I would be more than happy to discuss the game with people in the comments if they are interested enough.Persona 5 - Keeping JRPGs Alive - Spoiler-Free ReviewCorrupted Save2017-04-20 | I love the heck out of this game. It's not a game for everyone, but anyone that has liked JRPG games ought to give this one some serious consideration. You don't need to be a fan of the series - or know anything about it, really - to enjoy this game.
Out of respect for players that are actually looking up reviews to determine whether this game is right for them, I have made sure to omit of blur out anything that might be considered major spoilers. Most things in the plot mentioned are early in the game, or very small details.
Please let me know in the comments if you're playing this game, thinking about playing it, or heck, if you finished the game and want to let me know how you liked it (or didn't like it, that's okay too!)Nioh Review - Is it a Dark Souls Clone or More?Corrupted Save2017-02-28 | Nioh was sold to me as a Dark Souls-like game set in feudal Japan. I didn't play the Beta, so when I picked up this game, I didn't fully know what to expect.
I found that it actually borrowed elements from the popular From Software games, but had enough to differentiate it from those games to be sometime all its own. Some changes are good, some aren't so good.
Overall, it's an enjoyable game with a lot to offer. As I played it, I actually found myself thinking of Onimusha a bit more than Dark Souls, personally.Night in the Woods Review - A Storybook for Grown-UpsCorrupted Save2017-02-27 | This is my review of the indie title Night in the Woods, available on PS4, PC, Mac, and Linux.
This is a story-based game with a cute aesthetic reminiscent of Wed Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox. Thought this story centers around animals, it's not a fairy tale meant for children.
The themes this game tackles are heavy and thoughtful. If you are into games that are more focused on story and experience over combat and boss fights, then this may be one to check out for you.Resident Evil 7 Review - Is It a Resident Evil Game?Corrupted Save2017-01-28 | As a long-time fan of the Resident Evil series, the new style of the game really worried me. The Resident Evil games have not been consistent over the years, and the creators claimed that this installment was a return to form.
I played through it, and decided to review it - not whether it's good - but is it Resident Evil as we know it?Watchdogs 2 Review - Who is this game for?Corrupted Save2017-01-15 | This is my review of the sequel to the universally "Meh"ed Watchdogs. Generally speaking, if you're okay with how open games work, you'll probably be on board about halfway, and then whether or not you like the characters will get you the rest of the way.
The game has a pretty decent puzzle-solving platforming style with the drones you control, but doesn't fully commit to that. I suspect that a more unique, even better game lurks somewhere inside the game mechanics.
But the one we got isn't really bad by any stretch.Corrupted Save - Channel TrailerCorrupted Save2017-01-09 | Welcome to my channel, Corrupted Save. I made this video to explain how my channel will work, and what to expect from the videos I create here.
I'm hoping that this channel can be a place where people can discuss games and anything game-related from a positive and respectful environment.Rainbow Six Siege - Frost Mat GuideCorrupted Save2017-01-03 | Frost is my favorite operator in Rainbow Six Siege. I've spent a lot of time coming up with strategies on using Welcome Mats. I have decent success, but I rarely come across others that use methods similar to mine.
In this video, I want to talk about Welcome Mat placement. Not where exactly to place them, but the thought process that goes into how to place them.Final Fantasy XV Review - Who is this game for?Corrupted Save2016-12-26 | After around 80 hours of gameplay with Final Fantasy XV, I share my thoughts about my thoughts on who might enjoy this game. This review is without any extra knowledge from Kingsglaive or Brotherhood. I wanted to ensure that my perspective would be fresh, and not influenced by the supplemental materials.Rainbow Six Siege - I Used to Be GoodCorrupted Save2016-12-05 | After months of giving Rainbow Six Siege a break (and playing a lot of Overwatch), I returned to the game to find that I can barely play it now.
These are the pre-hiatus highlights and the post-hiatus lowlights for your schadenfreude amusement.Dishonored 2 Review - Who is this game for?Corrupted Save2016-11-17 | Dishonored 2 review by JackLockjaw.
Who is this game for? For whom is this game? I ask the big questions here. I give small answers.
Artists highlighted in the video: Sergey Kolesov - peleng.artstation.com Cedric Peyravernay - cedricpeyravernay.artstation.com (Yes, I know I misspelled Peyravernay in the video - Please forgive me.)JackLockjaws Overwatch (PS4) Highlight/Lowlight Reel 1Corrupted Save2016-11-04 | This is my first highlight reel. I'd like to strike an even balance between funny, badass, and complete fail moments.
While anyone can splice their amazing moments together and portray themselves as nearly pro, I choose to put forth my entirely adequate gameplay.
I've had players message me accusing me of cheating and telling me I suck.
By the way, I did eventually remove my McCree golden gun and the Riverboat skin. At this point, not having those made my McCree look unique.World of Final Fantasy - Who is this game for?Corrupted Save2016-10-31 | This is my review of World of Final Fantasy, a turn-based, monster-collecting PS4 JRPG by Square Enix. I encourage anyone to give this a shot, but watch the review to see what you can expect, and see whether or not this is something for you.Darkest Dungeon - Who is this Game For?Corrupted Save2016-10-26 | I'm Jack Lockjaw, and this is my first video review. The Playstation 4 release of Darkest Dungeon was my first foray into this Lovecraftian dungeon crawling RPG.
Rather than give an arbitrary number to score the game, I attempt to give arbitrary guesses as to who might enjoy the game, and who should avoid it.Corrupted Save Live StreamCorrupted Save2016-10-09 | ...
