The Geek CritiqueThe definitive video game remake is finally critiqued! Seriously, it excels at so much that it makes all the other remakes feel bad.
The title is because the end of the 2D Metroid series is also the beginning, you see. Alternate title was METROID ZEO, 'cause this game is STRONGER THAN BEFORE! But nobody would get that.

To be frank, it didn't suit my tastes. So when I was put in [charge of writing], I decided, 'I'm going to make a Sonic that I like!'" -Shiro Maekawa, writer for Sonic Adventure 2, Heroes, 06, and Sonic & the Black Knight
Those *stellar* SatAM cues were by the incredibly talented@f0xshadow521! (I had hilariously never noticed that it was BLATANTLY the Jimmy Hart version of the Back to the Future theme.)

Like Secret Rings, it was initially very well-regarded. Unlike Secret Rings, its reputation hasn't really devolved... rather, it's just been forgotten. Nobody talks about it anymore. This booty has been lost.
Not like that. Like... like *treasure*. Because this game has pirates. Wait, where are you going, come back!

Sega left the hardware business, but the failure of the Dreamcast was about more than just Sega. It was the failure of the design philosophy that had, until this point, defined console gaming. Nintendo suffered under this new paradigm, while Microsoft rose up, and the PlayStation 2 thrived, becoming the hottest console the world has ever seen.
The industry would never be the same, and to find the silver lining in what it became instead would take a long time and a lot of growing up...

Just four years later, the company, and its Saturn console, were in dire straits, struggling in a distant third place behind the powerhouse Nintendo 64 and the upstart Sony PlayStation. And yet Sonic the Hedgehog, the very series that had propelled Sega to such unbelievable heights just a generation before, was nowhere to be found. This is the story of the only Sonic game the team that bore his name would ever make for Sega's 32-bit console, and much like the Saturn itself, it's been uncelebrated and under-appreciated ever since.

It was also a 1991 release for the Game Boy, every ambition it had tarnished by time. More than any other game in the series, Metroid II needed a remake. And when it finally happened, it would be Metroid's return to prominence after seven long years.
I can't overstate how critical my Patreon backers are. Without them, I'd have to take brand deals and rush out content. They give me the freedom to make this series the way I want it to be, and to make each episode as good as I can. So, only if you're in a position to do so, please consider backing me: patreon.com/GeekCritique
This was formerly a Patreon-exclusive episode of the show, but I'm releasing it here as a present for everyone. Hope you all have an excellent holiday and a Happy New Year!

What's a card-carrying old-school Sega fanboy to do!? Easy: Make ANOTHER video on the same subject, gushing over the hardware and accessories, and answering a few common questions about the original episode. This is the Dreamcast add-on!
This episode was originally made as a Patreon exclusive bonus episode, but I'm releasing it here on YouTube in celebration of the Dreamcast's birthday! I hope you all enjoy it!
Back TGC on Patreon: http://www.patreon.com/GeekCritique This season has a pair of milestone bonus episodes - we're currently working toward one for Shadow the Hedgehog, and Sonic 1 Genesis is also on the table. To clarify how this works, my bonus episodes are *not* exclusive to Patrons, and they're not on Patreon right now. I haven't made them yet!
Rather, these are episodes I'll create and make available to _everyone_ if my Patreon hits this season's milestones. AM2R and Other M were milestone bonus goals for the Metroid seasons, and Shadow and Sonic 1 Genesis will work the same way!

Well, at least it was when I actually *could* see it...

This video focuses on my own experiences with the game, examining WHY things ended up this way, and WHAT those repercussions were for Sonic as a franchise.
VOICE CAST: Thank you all SO much for helping make that section come together so spectacularly! You all were so wonderful that I've had more than one person, including my girlfriend, turn to me and ask if that was REALLY in the game. :D

It's the game that split the fanbase in two. It tells a story of a Hero Side versus a Dark Side. And it conclusively ended one era, just as it began a new one... by releasing on a NINTENDO SYSTEM!?
Special thanks to The Dreamcast Junkyard for being an awesome site that I've read for over 10 years, to Sega Retro for being an invaluable resource, to Tickeroo for letting me use their PSO footage from 2001, to Tom Waterhouse for the original title card art (I used it as desktop wallpaper back in 2007!), and to Benjamin Woodring for sponsoring a Dreamcast retrospective way back in 2015! I hope it was worth the wait!
Oh, and a HUGE thanks to the combined suggestions of @pyrrhickong on Twitter and my bird woman Alisha, for saving the PS2 rant near the end!

But Metroid Prime 3: Corruption wasn't aimed at them. It was aimed at us, and it was meant to prove that the Wii would have plenty of experiences worthy of what games could be. The trilogy concluded here.
WHEN IS THE NEXT EPISODE OUT? Here's the schedule for this season: 9/16: Metroid Prime 9/23: Prime 2: Echoes 9/30: Prime 3: Corruption 10/7: Donkey Kong Country Returns 10/14: DKC Tropical Freeze
However, the Dolphin emulator recently added the ability to "passthrough" a Bluetooth device, and massively improved its ability to interface with a real Wii Remote. Using a real controller now feels just like it does on an actual console. So if that's an option for you, I'd recommend it.
WILL YOU COVER SAMUS RETURNS AND PRIME 4? Yeah, at some point. At the moment I don't have _that_ good of a way to capture 3DS footage, though.
WHAT ABOUT OTHER M? That's this season's Patreon milestone bonus! Same as with the 2D series where the bonus was AM2R, if we hit that milestone, I'll release the episode to everyone on YouTube.
HUGE thanks to Milton Guasti himself for being so willing to answer my questions. If you'd like to see our full exchange, here it is, but you should DEFINITELY watch the video first as the text spoils a lot: http://pastebin.com/qAaMVFA0
Almost all of the music in this video is from the Metroid tracks from Smash Bros, the Metroid series, or AM2R itself. The "Sweet Dreams" remix at the beginning is from this INCREDIBLE Sonic fan short. It seemed appropriate: youtube.com/watch?v=NkFudZN-klU
