Known as one of the most creative theologians writing today, Sam Wells has become most associated with the practice of being with, as distinguished from three other ways of relating – working for, working with and being for. In a dozen books published over the last 12 years he explores the full implications of the notion of being with in relation to mission, ethics, pastoral care and social welfare. More recently he has explored the significance of this notion for the core tenets of Christian theology – God’s purpose in creating, in coming in Jesus, and in bringing the universe’s story to an end. His ideas are challenging and transformative in their implications for conventional understandings of Christian doctrine and put him in tension with the majority of theologians through the centuries.

Transcript: Welcome to St Martin-in-the-Fields. I'm delighted to know you're considering joining our congregational life.
St Martin’s congregation has a mission statement - being with God on the edge. The edge is the place where Jesus spent most of his time. The edge is the place of the margins where people don't have much and wonder if anyone cares about them. That's where we strive to spend a lot of our time together, because that's where Jesus spent most of his time. But the edge can also mean the cutting edge - the place of imagination, of growth, of discovery, of taking risks. All of those things are part of what we think of our DNA as St Martin-in-the-Fields.
Then there's being with. Being with is really about how we spend forever. Just imagine being in heaven - there's no problems to fix. What we need to do is learn to be with God, to be with one another, to be with ourselves, and to be with God's renewed creation. Those four kinds of being with shape our life as a community at St Martin's. And then finally this God - we believe the way to worship and celebrate and glorify God is to build a community together, where we all bring our different qualities to the table, the communion table, and God gives us each back the same.
We're not the place that takes labels terribly seriously - you can be disabled physically, you can have mental health difficulties, you can be a very high powered person who works in the city - it doesn't really matter what label you bring into the building. We're interested in who you really are because God's interested in who you really are. We believe it's about bringing forth your assets and sharing those with the whole community. We can't worship God fully without you, that's why we want you to join us.Christopher Purves: Songs of War & RefugeSt Martin-in-the-Fields2023-09-13 | One of the supreme dramatic baritones of our time, Christopher Purves is an interpreter of gripping theatricality and sense of character. So, when the shadows lengthen and candles start to flicker in the twilight, what could be more enchanting than to hear the air shimmer with song?
Ex Cathedra have taken that moment and distilled it into a seamless tapestry of words and choral singing drawn from birdsong, sacred ritual, and (of course) that sunny, unmistakable sensation that the holidays are just around the corner. Step out of the city noise, and let your spirit sunbathe…

Originally commissioned for the coronation of George II and Queen Caroline, Handel’s Coronation Anthems are supreme examples of grand celebratory music. The first, Zadok the Priest, has been played at every coronation since its premier in 1727, and tells of the anointing of Solomon by Zadok and Nathan, and the people's rejoicing at this event.
Hailed as one of Britain’s leading choirs, their ‘unaccompanied choral singing comes no better than this’ (The Guardian); ‘For purity and precision of tone, and flawless intonation, Nigel Short’s chamber choir Tenebrae is pretty much unbeatable’ (The Times)
