When they raise their quills and start grunting as they run around, I like to say they are “going porcupine!” They are getting all of their energy out, similar to how dogs have the zoomies. I absolutely love sitting outside at night and watching the porcupines roam around while I listen to the sounds of nature and look up at the stars…what could be better!
Baby Porcupine (Scooter) Finds New Home Adventurous Heart - Rachel Nagle 2024-04-19 | Scooter, one of my best African Crested porcupine babies, found his new forever home. Scooter was so sweet that I intended to keep him; however, the rest of the prickle pack wasn’t in agreement. Kibo and Quilliam made it known that though he was family, another male wasn’t their preference. I put my desire to keep this sweet boy aside and found him an amazing home. This may have been one of the hardest decisions I’ve had to make, and yes, tears were definitely involved, but I knew it was the best for Scooter! Scooter was born November 8, 2023 by Mawenzi & Kibo. He found his new home at 5 months old.

He became a pilot a few years ago and recently bought his first warbird, a Yak 52. After a bit of training on his own with a certified pilot for the plane, Phil was finally able to take me for a ride! I was a little surprised about how much more nervous I was to be in a cockpit all by myself compared to when we flew the Cessna and I was right beside him. Milk Mission: Feeding Hungry Porcupettes! Adventurous Heart - Rachel Nagle 2023-12-12 | What do you do when you accidentally leave the porcupettes milk formula 3 hours away? You call up a pilot (AKA Phil…my husband), and ask him to save the day. Mission accepted…we flew our Yak52 plane back to our parents to get the formula and make it back in time to save some hungry porcupettes! In the end, we got to fly and the baby porcupines had full bellies! Lesson learned: don’t forget the milk formula…unless you need an excuse to go flying!!
Baby Porcupines…Triplets!!! Adventurous Heart - Rachel Nagle 2023-11-27 | Mawenzi, my pet African crested porcupine, had her first set of triplets! One of the babies was born with weak/compromised back legs. He would drag his left leg around instead of bending it. Thanks to our Husky, Shira, having had ACL surgery on one of her legs around the same time, I knew what type of therapy was supposed to be done to help her leg recover after surgery. I decided to try a similar method on the porcupettes leg, that is massaging the leg and moving it through a series of bending motions. Thankfully, it proved to be successful, and at 1.5 weeks old, he was starting to walk with full strength! Exploring Washington: Sol Duc Falls, Salmon Cascades, & Lake Crescent Adventurous Heart - Rachel Nagle 2023-11-21 | Part 2 of my Washington Adventure included exploring Sol Duc Falls, Salmon Cascades, and Lake Crescent. I was scheduled to go whale watching this day; however, when high wind, waves, and storms changed those plans, I changed mine too. While exploring Quinault Rain Forest, I happened to stop and chat with some folks who actually live about an hour from me in Ohio, and they said Sol Duc Falls was a must see. Thanks to their insight, I was not disappointed. While salmon aren’t quite whales, my fascination with seeing the salmon make their way up the cascades was probably on point with whale watching. I loved watching the salmon persevere to accomplish their goal. If you’re ever struggling to follow the adventures in your heart, think like a salmon. If you get pushed back down river, don’t give up…fight for the life you’ve always dreamed of having!
Exploring Washingtons Rain Forests: Quinault & Hoh Adventurous Heart - Rachel Nagle 2023-11-07 | I’ve wanted to explore Washington’s Hoh Rain Forest for awhile, so when the opportunity to go to Washington presented itself, I said, “Let’s make it happen!” After 3-days of paddling a SUP on the Ocean, I traveled up Hwy 101 to explore both the Quinault and Hoh Rain Forests. The shear size of the trees and overall scenery did not disappointment. I’m thankful for the opportunity to continue to explore the adventures in my heart.

Marv and I had a blast competing and talking to lots of people at this year’s event! The most exciting part is seeing other people’s curiosity when they pet a skunk for the first time!

I was laughing hysterically as Quilliam picked up a stick and started carrying it like a dog while the other porcupines (Kibo & Nova) joined in with the “porcupine dance!” The “porcupine dance” is what I call it when the porcupines dance around with their quills up to burn off some of their extra energy.

At first I was a little nervous because I wasn’t sure how they’d react, but as it turns out, porcupines are very affectionate and care deeply about taking care of the rest of their family members.

Porcupine Surgery – Spaying Nova Adventurous Heart - Rachel Nagle 2023-01-27 | At 5 months old, we decided to have Nova, our pet African Crested porcupine, spayed. We decided this would be best because our prickle of porcupines that consists of the parents (Mawenzi & Kibo) and their kids (Quilliam & Nova) all live together. There aren’t a lot of resources out there (at least that we could find…other than an article from the UK) about how to spay and neuter porcupines, so I am posting this video of Nova getting spayed and the one of Quilliam getting neutered in case there are others like me in this situation. I am a big fan of sharing knowledge and helping others achieve and follow the adventures in their heart.
