The Village Destroyed By Recycling Factory Waste

CNA Insider 2023-01-12 | Nong Phawa village in Rayong Province, Thailand, has been dealing with the effects of untreated waste from a recycling factory owned by Win Process since 2012. Their trees have stopped bearing fruits, there aren’t any freshwater shrimp or shellfish left, and villagers’ health has suffered.

Despite the villagers’ repeated negotiations with management, the factory has denied responsibility. In 2021, Nong Phawa villagers sued Win Process for US$1.3 million.

In 2020, Thailand imported 550,000 tonnes of plastic waste from developed countries which are channelled to its recycling industry - but not all factories are well regulated. The Thai government intends to ban all plastic waste imports by 2025.

How Singapore’s Open-Concept Prison On Pulau Senang Ended In Tragedy

CNA Insider 2023-01-07 | Did you know that Singapore once had an open-concept ‘prison island’? In 1960, a penal settlement was set up on Pulau Senang, an island about 13km from the mainland. There were no bars nor fences and detainees were free to roam the island, with guards going unarmed.

Secret society members arrested under the 1955 Criminal Law (Temporary Provisions) were sent there to rehabilitate through hard work and education. Then, it was hailed as a visionary concept for its low re-offending rate, until tragedy struck.

Elina has successfully landed a job as a prime mover driver. An app built for the haulage industry means her deafness isn't a big issue anymore, as she no longer needs to use the walky-talky to get delivery details. But Elina has other fears to overcome.

Plastic pollution is another reason for the potential mass extinction of marine life. Studies estimate there are now 15 to 51 trillion pieces of plastic in the world's oceans. Not one square mile of surface ocean anywhere on earth is free of plastic pollution.

We traverse the Philippines to witness the impact of such human activities on the Philippines green sea turtle, and the battle to save them.

We also investigate how human exploitation of animal habitats and pollution are exacerbate the negative impacts of climate change. Many experts say a “mass extinction event” — only the sixth in the past half-billion years — is already underway.

Cooler habitats have been earmarked as a way for species to "escape" from warming climates. However, most species won't be able to do this quickly enough to avoid extinction, based on their past rates of movement.

CNA Insider 2022-12-16 | India is home to around 27,000 Asian elephants, it's the world’s largest population of the species. The country may be the species’ main stronghold, but its survival here is now under threat due to climate change.

The elephants' sensitivity to heat leads to metabolic disorders, oxidative stress, immune suppression and death. It also reduces their reproduction rates.

42% of their habitat in India will be lost due to the combined effects of human pressure and climate change. The elephants are likely to shift towards higher elevations in the Himalayas.

Animal activists, along with the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change in India, are battling to create a green corridor to help the elephants migrate.

Can the Asian elephant survive these modern threats to its existence?
