The pronunciation is classical.I've tried to write Flynn's verse so that the language changes gradually from prose to poetic. 'perago coepta fragilia' could go either way, a bit more towards prose, but it starts to become poetic because it's unclear - it could mean 'I have now started something fragile and I mean to see it through', or 'the brittle things I started before, I'll now get rid of them'. Meanwhile, 'visa illa splendent lumina' is extremely poetic - 'lumina' means 'lights' but in poetry it means 'eyes', so the sentence literally means 'as I see her, the lights are shining' but poetically it means 'my eyes light up when I see her'. That means that this translation is very different from most people's interpretation of the song. It is not about leaving behind right and wrong; it is about the struggle to do what is objectively right when everyone else is trying to create their own right and wrong, and how succumbing to pride, even for the best reasons, can have terrible consequences. Specifically I was inspired by an historical narrative which I particularly care about (understatement): the self-imposed exile of the second Roman emperor Tiberius, a stern, old-fashioned scholar and soldier who was never comfortable in his position (on principle or in practice) and was disliked by the people because he was strict and awkward, but nonetheless ruled as well as he could. After about 10 years as emperor (following 30 as Rome's greatest general) Tiberius retired to an island with his books. Much as Elsa doesn't realise that her flight triggered an eternal winter, Tiberius didn't realise that by intervening to stop adulation of the emperor, he was doing what he dreaded: acting as emperor.The wording is inspired mainly by Tacitus and Suetonius, who both wrote about Tiberius' reign. Suetonius' biography is an anthology of quotations, trivia and rumours. Tacitus' 'Annals of Imperial Rome' is a masterpiece, which tells the truth but uses wording to distort it. Combining these with the orator Cicero and poets Catullus & Lucretius, I hope to bridge the gap between historical & literary scholarship. Literary scholars can fail to realise that many of the horrendous stories about the emperors are nasty inventions, inspired by classic fables. Historians dismiss this sort of thing, but they scrutinise historical texts, comparing them to each other to produce the most accurate textbook version, and sometimes lose sight of the narrative aspect - in this case the mesmerising, almost poetic language of Tacitus, and how powerful and moving a text the 'Annals' is to read simply for entertainment. After all, it is (I think) the most lethally enduring character study in history. The other songs focus on the relationship between Tiberius and his beloved younger brother Drusus whose early death devastated him. Together the style and references make 'Frozen' a Disney version of the legend of Castor and Pollux, who were guardians of freedom and whom Tiberius and Drusus adopted as their symbols. I'm very proud of the result!2014 marks 2000 years since the death of Augustus and accession of Tiberius. I hope that this song does justice to both of them. Most history books - and celebrations this year - focus on Augustus, either ignoring or criticising Tiberius (which, since Tacitus chose to start with Tiberius, is a very strange error). Giving more attention to Tiberius, an equally capable ruler and equally fascinating individual, also (I hope) does something to shake away the centuries-old lie about Augustus: that he was a ruthless despot who aimed at monarchy from the beginning and disguised this by his charm and propaganda. Augustus was unpredictable and full of himself, but he was no tyrant; Tiberius was haughty and dismissive, but he was no monster. They both wanted, in their different ways, to protect the traditional structure of Rome - it was the Roman people who could not sustain it.This is my love letter to history; I hope that it conveys some of the inscrutable grandeur, dignity and anguish of the original Latin sources, and that it inspires you to write your own - hae pulcherrimae effigies et mansurae!

In several cases words are used that wouldn't be used if I'd done it classically.The solos, meanwhile, I wrote myself, so they're certainly not Ecclesiastical Latin, but for once I wrote them spontaneously rather than trying to evoke any literature or do any tricks. More than the artificial exercise of producing a text that imitates classical authors, I think this shows Latin's viability as a language of communication.So: the choruses are sung in Hebrew, with Latin subtitles adapted from the Biblia Sacra Vulgata. The Hebrew verses are in Biblical Hebrew, not modern, so they might not show up properly.For the repeated chorus at the end I had to leave the vocals, in one language or another, since I couldn't sing over the backing; I thought keeping the Hebrew was quite a nice way to draw attention to the fact that this is a dubbing and that Hebrew was the language they'd have been speaking.I've said it time and time again but for such a wonderful song I think it needs saying again: I CAN'T SING XD. I've held off because I was finding it very difficult to translate (the rhythm and melody aren't the easiest to fit to Latin words), but now it's finally done, and it was SO MUCH FUN.The title means 'Men, even you' (it's a bit lost in translation unless you insert a verb e.g. 'Even You can be Men'). From a Latinist's point of view, I could have been a lot stronger (and thereby offensive) with the invective but I decided to try to be inveNtive instead (SORRY). As well as a Monty Python reference (admittedly very esoteric but I have told you now so you can't miss it) I have paraphrased briefly Livy, Persius and Terence (incongruous perhaps, but most of this song is more about faffing around than it is about war).I know I'm not a man, but considering the plot of this film I'd say that doesn't matter! I am, however, a useless singer. I hope that doesn't impede the sentiment too much. It could be worse (I could be tone deaf, or a soprano).It's impossible to remove the choruses of 'be a man' near the end from the audio, at least with my technology, so I decided to leave it, and put a literal Latin translation in the subtitles, so you get an inkling of what adapting the words to the music is like.Dedicated to my condiscipuli who are sitting exams at the moment. Ancient Greek is learned in Greece and Britain very differently. I'm English and I always thought that the modern language was totally different. I've recently discovered that this isn't true, and I felt duped and embarrassed. However, I was equally dismayed by the fact that some Greek people called me disrespectful to Greece because I used the British pronunciation. Why this mutual scorn?! I've never previously made a statement about pronunciation, but here I'd like to state that BOTH WAYS ARE CORRECT. This version uses the pronunciation used in Modern Greece. It's almost incomprehensible to British people because several vowels & diphthongs are conflated into one sound, 'i' (this is called 'iotacism'). However, the Bible is written in Ancient Greek, in a dialect called Koine, WITH THIS PRONUNCIATION. It's possible that this dialect was around as early as Attic, but we don't know. In this version of the song, I used the lyrics from the Modern Greek version that I found easiest to render into Ancient Greek. This is to prove that it's THE SAME LANGUAGE. Of course it has changed in some ways - but we don't speak like Shakespeare, do we? I consider this video to be fair use; if you disagree please let me know.This is one of the rare cases where I have had to make a linguistic decision that greatly affects the meaning of the lyrics. To me, this song is clearly about the relationship between Merida and her mother, but because of the wording, and the nature of the English language ('this love...'), it could just as easily be a love song. However, I struggled to how to produce that effect in Latin. 'amor', the standard word for 'love', does mean both 'parent-child love' or 'romantic love'. But in the context, I find it implies sexual love because it is almost personified, and Amor personified is Cupid (counterpart of the Greek Eros, which means exclusively romantic love). Therefore, I chose the word 'pietas', firstly because it expresses 'parent-child devotion' concretely in one word, and secondly because it was one of the most important Roman ideals (it's the driving force of the Aeneid), and I thought it would be nice to get it into a song, especially as linguistically the songs are based on the style of the Aeneid. He was son of Zeus (Jupiter) and Alcmene, who was married to Amphitryon. Zeus made the night last twice as long so he could spend more time with Alcmene. Amphitryon didn't say anything about his wife's adultery because he feared the gods, so he was looked upon favourably by Zeus. Zeus prophesied that the first descendant of Perseus born on a certain day would be king of the entire area. Zeus' jealous wife Hera, who was goddess of childbirth, delayed Alcmene's labour so Heracles' cousin Eurystheus was born first and became king instead. The adult Hercules did indeed marry a Princess Megara, but Hera drove him mad until he killed their children, and then ordered the Oracle to direct him to serve Eurystheus for 10 years in order to be forgiven and become immortal. Eurystheus made him do the 12 Labours (originally 10, but he refused to accept two of them), so they were actually thanks to Hera's scheming. (In the Disney version, Zeus and Hera are his parents, while Alcmene and Amphitryon are his adoptive parents.) Afterwards he married Deianira, then ditched Deianira for a princess called Iole, so Deianira sent him a robe wrapped in what she thought was love potion but was actually poison. He died, went to Mount Olympus (finally) and married Hebe (Juventas), daughter of Hera, with whom he had 2 sons.

I have combined the English reconstructed pronunciation of Ancient Greek with some sounds from Modern Greek to make it 'doubly authentic' and because the latter sounds much nicer. The sound 'υ' in particular is pronounced as a rounded 'i' (which, firstly, caused a lot of difficulty, and secondly, is somewhere between 'oo', as I was taught to pronounce it, and 'ee' as in Modern Greek). I hope the new pronunciation makes my singing *slightly* more bearable ;) Half of this song was extremely easy to translate and I actually improvised it. The other half was a pain because I had to use the dual, a special Greek noun/verb formation for when there are 2 of something. And now for something different...Nana Mouskouri recorded 'Only Love' in several languages so I have put some of them together for you to hear her beautiful singing of this beautiful song in different ways :) If you can understand the lyrics it's even more wonderful to listen to, but if not, Nana's voice more than makes up for it anyway ^^ I was surprised no one had apparently thought of this before. It's the first time I've done a multi-language anything, and I had to move the tracks around because somehow they matched up in some places but not others, so I apologise for any slight indications of switching from one to the other. There are also 2 recordings of this song in German. I didn't include them because there are only 4 sections of the song, and I preferred to use the Romance language versions as I study them. I have since discovered that the sound is sadly blocked in Germany anyway.I've included less of the French version because Nana's French songs are better-known than the other two versions. All three foreign versions are beautiful, but none of them has seemed to be able to render the phrase 'I was part of you, and you were all of me', which is my favourite line -- they seem to have gone with similar themes of love being a heritage instead -- hence why I've switched back to English at the end.If anyone would like a French/Italian/Spanish translation of the original words, please let me know. Il y a des vidéos 'subs & trans' mais en général celles-ci ne sont pas des traductions poétiques. Enfin j'ai décidé de le faire moi-même. J'ai essayé de garder le sens original autant que possible, tout en gardant le rythme et la rime. Ainsi, la traduction est presque entièrement littérale, mais j'ai quelquefois changé le temps des verbes; pourtant, ce n'est pas grave, le sens est présent. Aussi dans certains cas j'ai manipulé un peu la nuance des paroles anglaises. J'espère que ceci vous plaît !NB. Le titre est "Tout enfin m'est éclairci" car l'expression "Je vois la lumière" n'a pas le sens de l'anglais, et d'ailleurs ce n'est pas très poétique.
