It's one of his dad's favorite songs, and seemed like a fun way to celebrate Father's Day with some dad-rock. The whole thing came together pretty quickly and easily, which I attribute entirely to working with such awesome musicians (Ryan, George, Wade, and Angel.) We know it's a cheesy song, but it still rocks, even 54 years after it was originally recorded.With this being such an essential song in rock history, I wanted to do what we could to preserve the vibe of the original, while still allowing it to benefit from modern production techniques. I started this project with making a tempo map to match timing variations in the original song so we could keep the same energy and not force everything to a steady click. Drums were recorded in Angel's studio in Florida, and no drum replacement was used in the mix, except for the snare due to a technical issue. Guitars and bass were recorded DI, but a lot of effort was put into keeping the mix feeling live. There was very little editing involved, and you'll hearing some small timing inconsistencies from all of us. In general, we wanted this to sound as much as possible like an organic performance of a rock song. Hard to do when we live in five different states, but I'm happy with the result.To all of the fathers out there, enjoy your day, rock hard, and stay wild. It would be amazing to see what Chuck Schuldiner would be creating now, twenty years later.A few months back, I was chatting with a YouTube guitarist named Tbomb (www.youtube.com/c/TbombGuitar, @TbombGuitar) about death metal guitar, and we decided it would be fun to cover Crystal Mountain. I was lucky enough to get Max Noel (twitter.com/MaxNoelBass) and Angel Hernandez (masikus.bandcamp.com) to join in, and we suddenly had a killer lineup for this one-off song.Production wise, this was an interesting project. I wanted to retain a large part of the original sound, so the mixing process didn't focus on polishing things up as much as my other releases. I made a custom tempo map to match the original song, including all of the fluctuations inherent in non-click recordings. I also used some custom speaker cabinet impulse responses by JZIR Impulses (jzir.gumroad.com), which are amazingly well-crafted to match specific album tones (JZIR isn't sponsoring this, but their stuff is killer and I'm happy to give them a shout out.) No drum triggers were used.Obviously, anyone covering a Death song has a big task in front of them. We're not claiming to match the original, but we hope you enjoy our take on the song. Chad asked me if I wanted to write a short metal theme for the colossus, to which I replied, "oh, okay."It's not every day that a perfect gig falls into your lap.I cranked out a rough version in about half an hour and he loved it, so I cleaned it up a bit and here it is. Lovecraft. Lovecraft was a master of horror, and incredibly influential on many of the modern films, games, and novels in the genre today. I've been doing more and more voice work lately, and wanted to give you something a little different than just releasing new music. I never played the Assassin's Creed games, but I signed up to contribute a song to a compilation album for Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. The album never reached fruition, and my track never ended up getting released. I was really happy with how it turned out, and only recently stumbled across it again. The main driving force in this song is the bass, it's got a relaxed pacing and more of a narrative-focused structure, which are also not my standard "Viking Guitar" tropes. All of that being said, I really dig this song, and had it stuck in my head for weeks after I finished it back in September of 2015. I'm glad I now have the chance to share it with you all.

Ultima VI Bootup reimagined in the style of Tool Viking Guitar 2018-05-13 | http://vikingguitar.bandcamp.com/track/laterultimus-vihttp://www.vikingguitar.comUltima VI is a game I never played (haven't played ANY of the Ultima series, actually), but the "Bootup" music from that game immediately grabbed my attention when I stumbled across it a while back. It had been on my list of potential covers for a while, and I recently got a small amount of free time to work on it. As an experiment, I wanted to redo it in the style of Tool. I ended up ripping off "Schism" and "The Grudge" more than "Lateralus", but "Laterultimus VI" was too juicy of a portmanteau to not use. Obviously, no one does Tool as well as Tool does, but I had a lot of fun with this one.
