Join us as members of CIFAR’s Boundaries, Membership & Belonging program, Will Kymlicka, program co-director, and Evan Lieberman, fellow, take us through research that explores whether reminders of our common humanity is sufficient to generate support for vulnerable groups.
.....

At CIFAR, this question is a critical starting point for exploring fundamental issues facing our species today.
Back in 2021, we challenged researchers to think critically about the long-term intersections between humans, science and technology, social and cultural systems, and our environment. CIFAR’s third Global Call for Ideas invited bold proposals for new research programs that examined the “Future of Being Human”, confronted the dynamic problems facing our world and offered the potential to transform our planet for the better.
The excitement from the research community in tackling this important work was unmatched. Experts from across disciplines and geographical boundaries proposed daring and unprecedented lines of research that offered unique possibilities for impact.
After months of diligent work and analysis by the team at CIFAR we are proudly sharing the results of CIFAR’s third Global Call for Ideas.
Three new bold proposals will join the roster of CIFAR’s programs: The Multiscale Human, Humanity’s Urban Future, and Future Flourishing.
The idea that humans are separate from their environment, other organisms, or the tools they use — human exceptionalism — has been critiqued from all sides. But what will it mean to flourish without exceptionalism in the future? The interdisciplinary network in the Future Flourishing program brings together philosophers, historians, curators, conservators, artists and anthropologists to imagine what it will take to create a better world for all of the entities that make up humans and live with us.
The future of being human is integrally tied to cities: by 2050, more than 70 per cent of the world’s population will live in an urban area. So how does one successfully plan for an urban future, knowing the city will develop beyond any current plan — and quickly?
Members of CIFAR’s new Humanity’s Urban Future program are considering what we can learn from the urban past, and what we can imagine for its future. The program will consider many important factors, including infrastructure (both material and institutional), political divisions, questions of scale, climate change, and other potential crises. In seeking answers to these pressing general questions, the program will take six cities as test-cases: Calcutta; Toronto; Shanghai; Naples; Mexico City; and Kinshasa.
By studying what makes a good city of the future, the researchers aim to make a transformative impact on urban policy and planning, regulation and infrastructure, inspiring collective deliberation and learning around how one should work towards a better urban future.
The human body has 37 trillion cells. In this incredibly complex and dynamic system, changes at the molecular level alter cell behaviour, tissue architecture and the function of organs; in the other direction, changes in the environment can feed into the body and cause molecular changes. The Multiscale Human Team seeks to understand the system at all these scales to create an unprecedented map of the human body and help drive medical advances.
The fundamental challenge the researchers will address in The Multiscale Human is how to integrate data from various spatial and temporal scales across the body while accounting for diversity in the 8 billion strong global population. To do this, the program will bring together researchers with diverse disciplines and a shared goal — to understand, map, and communicate the multiscale human.

Alán Aspuru-Guzik is charting a new course for innovation in robotics, renewable energy and AI through his research at the interfaces of quantum information, chemistry and machine learning.
.....
"The study of causality deals with understanding when manipulating some variables leads to a change in others. For example, does giving patients a new drug cause improved recovery? In this talk, I'll present an overview of the field of causal inference until now and where it's going. In particular, after reviewing the foundations of causal inference, I'll introduce the new field of research at the intersection of causality and machine learning. "
Dhanya Sridhar is a Canada CIFAR AI Chair at Mila and an assistant professor at the Department of Computer Science and Operations Research at the University of Montreal. Sridhar develops theory and machine learning methods to study causal questions. Causal questions are about interventions to the world: how would patients respond if they were given a new therapeutic? What is the effect of a new content moderation policy on social media posts? Researchers cannot always run experiments to answer such questions — experiments may be costly or unethical. Instead, researchers often collect large-scale datasets about the state of the world: what therapeutics do patients take and what outcomes do we observe? The challenge is that, from non-experimental data, distinguishing between causal relationships and correlations is difficult due to sources of bias such as confounding factors. Her research focuses on i) theoretically understanding what causal questions can be answered from observed data, and ii) adapting machine learning methods — especially in the context of text and social network data — to estimate causal effects.

Machine learning research is expanding its reach, beyond the traditional realm of the tech industry and into the activities of other scientists, opening the door to truly transformative advances in these disciplines. In this lecture I will focus on two aspects, modeling and experimental design, that are intertwined in the theory-experiment-analysis active learning loop that constitutes a core element of the scientific methodology. Computers will be necessary to go beyond the currently purely manual research loop and take advantage of high-throughput experimental setups and large-scale experimental datasets. I will discuss methods related to active learning, reinforcement learning, generative modeling, Bayesian ML, amortized variational learning and causal discovery. I will discuss the notion of epistemic uncertainty and how to estimate it. I will motivate generative policies that can sample a diverse set of candidate solutions to a problem, be it for proposing new experiments or causal hypotheses. Finally, I will describe current research to help us with these questions based on a new deep learning probabilistic framework called GFlowNets and how we plan to apply these in areas of great societal need like the unmet challenge of antimicrobial resistance or the discovery of new materials to help fight climate change.

"Running a good experiment is difficult in reinforcement learning. There are many decisions to be made, including: How long should you run your agent? Do we use rules of thumb to set hyper-parameters or some systematic search? How do we measure and aggregate performance? The answer to such questions can greatly impact the credibility and utility of the result ranging from insightful to down-right misleading. This lecture is designed to provide the uninitiated with a cookbook or how-to guide for running good experiments in RL."

"In this lecture, I will describe the gold standard privacy notion, called differential privacy, and how the privacy notion is applied to the training of large-scale deep learning models. I will also talk about deep generative modelling with the aim of privacy-preserving data generation. In the last section of the lecture, I will present how the privacy notion trades off with other emerging notions in machine learning such as interpretability, fairness, and causality."
Mijung’s primary focus is on building privacy-preserving machine learning algorithms using a sophisticated mathematical notion called differential privacy. Her other research interests include: compressing neural network models using Bayesian methods, and; understanding the relationships between differential privacy and other emerging notions in machine learning such as fairness, interpretability, and causality.

"This tutorial-style session will first introduce off-policy reinforcement learning. Thereafter, we will discuss the advantages and challenges of this class of RL algorithms. We will then talk about how to perform use off-policy RL in an offline setting and finally we will talk about role of data augmentation in off-policy estimation for continuous control. And using motivating examples from robotics, we will end with an overview of open problems using structured inductive biases in RL."

Animesh Garg - Chaires en IA Canada-CIFAR, l’Institut Vecteur; professeur adjoint, University of Toronto.

Cho and his collaborators have extensively investigated natural language processing and machine translation. This has resulted in an attention mechanism for artificial neural networks and a new paradigm in machine translation, called ‘neural machine translation.’ It has not only advanced research, but has also been adopted by industry to produce better machine translation systems.
Recently, Cho has started to go beyond human languages to study emergent communication among machines, equipping machines to exchange information as efficiently and effectively as possible to solve challenging problems that require co-ordination among multiple intelligent agents. He believes this communication will not only help machines to solve challenging problems themselves, but will allow them to help humans in expanding our horizon of knowledge.
----
